Surface Pro Copilot+ review: Microsoft finally solved the Windows on Arm dilemma.

  • It's taken 12 years, but Microsoft has finally made an Arm-powered Surface tablet that senior editor Devindra Hardawar doesn't want to toss out of a window.
    The new Surface Pro, one of the company's first Copilot+ AI PCs, is astoundingly fast and power-efficient, thanks to Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X Elite chip. It can run native Arm apps well - but even better, it can also emulate older apps without much fuss. Basically, Microsoft has finally managed to do what Apple did with its M-series MacBooks four years ago.

    The built in kickstand is one of the best features of the Surface and what sets it apart from the competition; the fact that it's your biggest con is baffling.

      Totally agree. I love these detachable windows tablets. Sometimes I just want to use the digital pens that come with them, and I do not want to have to fold it in half. With the detachable keyboards, it makes it easier to do this when all you want to do with use the pen and on-screen keyboards for writing and typing.

    I completely disagree with your opinion about the build in kickstand. This is the big saling point to me because it makes it's so perfect for media consumption where you don't want a keyboard in front of you - only the screen. When you connect it to an external monitor including a desktop keyboard it's also very nice to be able to remove the attached keyboard from the surface pro and use the kickstand. It's such a nice setup. If you want a perfect lap-top (without a kickstand), then go with the surface laptop.

    Not sure why you said the Surface Pro has no tablet mode. Windows 11 introduced the tablet UI a while ago. when you detach the SP11 from the keyboard, the taskbar should autohide and turn into a smartphone-like gesture bar and the UI elements get larger touch targets, including Edge browser if you have the tablet mode enabled. I've been using my Surface Book 2 like this for about 2 years now and it's a large improvement compared to W10's janky and inconsistent tablet mode.

    Devindra, at 4:45 you are holding a Surface Pro with both hands, inches from a tabletop, where you could easily use the kickstand, the keyboard, or both. You look like a guy who has suffered for years using an iPad with no kickstand and has never learned to properly use one. Then, to top it off, you complain that the Surface even has a kickstand. Please stop reviewing products you don't know how to use, since reviews like this are worthless.

    I bought the OLED version. As far as computing on the Surface that has been fine so far. Only my Yeti X mic is not being recognized within the Logitech software. I had to keep playing with my monitor connections through my hub to get the right resolutions. The graphics output from the new Surface has been a disappointment. I think it will come down to use case. I think those that do typical Mac user type things (they like lots of video editing) this will be average if not worse than a Mac
      For gamers… They’ll probably be disappointed
      For those that do standard work and analysis (which is me) then this is great and snappy. I have the base model and very happy. Much faster than my surface pro 9 and the extra battery life is real and appreciated.
      I guess I probably don’t push the machine in ways that some other users (gamers / creatives) do?!….

    • @RemofRenaissance
      @RemofRenaissance 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@reinam3882 yes it’s fine. I haven’t tried in this device but in older ones was good, I used to use kindle and / or kobo apps. You can even have android store apps on a surface but I haven’t tested that on these new ones.
      If I’m honest though. I would prefer on an iPad (reading) if choosing. Just easier to pick up and better to use as an out and out tablet. I see surface pro as more laptop than tablet which is what I needed to pair with an iPad (I just like working off screens and pens rather than actual laptops but need the desktop environment).
      Lastly windows hello is pretty decent as Face ID log in which also helps.

      Most people actually like it the problem is they talk about if you have certain software that you really need to use, but this is like Apple‘s beginning because when Apple first switched to arm fully, it took on two years to get everything together even if so, let’s say you wanna get actual computer work done and you’re looking at this or an iPad This actually could really maybe beat out the iPad in a lot of areas depending on software as this is really a computer for real whereas the iPad I love it, but it’s not a computer and they don’t want it to be because then it will mess with their Mac area.

    Honestly Microsoft needs to create a bundle option. Give you say $200 off for bundling the new "flex" keyboard with your device and give us another 50% off for adding the new stylus pen as well. So the low end Microsoft Surface Pro 11 with LCD would be $1250 and the higher end with OLED would be $1750. And they're pricing these at a premium. They should drop the base prices IMO by $100 by default and start at $899 (LCD version) and $1349 (OLED version). But what do I know... 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Panos Panay left the Surface team at Microsoft before the launch of this device, which I thought felt weird at the time of departure. Now, after they pulled/retracted the Recall feature, then, maybe, perhaps, Panos would have been less “pumped” about it… maybe even ‘deflated’. He’s settling in at Amazon now so, maybe we’ll see an awesome new Kindle with a kickstand running Android, with a keyboard cover and a pen.

      I don’t get why people keep saying this. Including the keyboard wouldn’t save you any money, it’d just raise the base price by $350. If you need both, buy both, and then you’ve created an included keyboard bundle for the same price you would have paid if Microsoft did it.

    This “review” is ass. You should review it for what it is, not what you want it to be. Compared to other tablets, lapability is much improved. Try holding the Tab S9 Ultra and tell me how comfortable (or lapable, for that matter) is. The fact that it even has an integrated kickstand is amazing.
    Similarly, the Surface Pro has not been made of magnesium alloy in a while. I think starting with the SP8 they switched to aluminum, and in the product page for the SP11, it states that it uses 100% recycled aluminum for the kickstand and “bucket”, which I assume is either the portion that holds the kickstand, or an internal designation for the entire rest of the tablet.
    Either way, this review was as bad as any of those YT influencer reviews.

    • @stevenalexander4721
      @stevenalexander4721 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I still have my Tab S7 and love it. I chose the smaller one because I have a lot of e-books and it is the perfect size to hold in my hand, like most of my books when reading. I do not think that I would ever buy the Ultra lineup because of their size and price. At that point, I might as well just buy a regular laptop or the surface pro lineup for the similar form factor since they can do so much more. If you are using the Tab S lineup for media consumption, then the Ultra is great for the large screen size but for day-to-day stuff like email, web browsing, reading, and things like that, I prefer the smaller ones.

    The Surface Pro is not a laptop it is a tablet. The Kickstand and now the ability to use a detached keyboard cover enhances the use case. Unfortunately the biggest problem is Windows OS has a UI (User Interface) that is not optimised for Tabets. I think now that Windows Tablets have really arrived and the rising Windows Handhelds should encourage Microsoft to optimise Windows OS for Touch and pen as a priority.

      There is no confusion. I haven't said that you can't use it as a Tablet. You can and since the birth of the Surface Pro many people have used it as a Tablet. The argument is that the user experience is less than desirable for it to be used only as Tablet. When you compare the user experience of using it as a tablet compared to an Android Tablet or an iPad there is a significant difference and it more on the negative side for the Windows alternative.
