The Truth About FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices)

  • Fish Aggregating Devices (or FADs) are still widely used by tuna fishing fleets throughout the Pacific Ocean despite a (temporary) ban. The use of FADs results in the bycatch of many juvenile and unwanted species contributing to the depletion of fish stocks and threatening vulnerable marine species.

    Spearfishing also use FADs. it's the senseless non-selective catching method that is at fault here. not FADS!

  • @plasterdbastard

    We use FADs for sportfishing a lot, and the income from these guided programs and sportfishing surpasses that of commercial fishing.
    FADs aren't the problem, it's the practices that we allow combined with sheer over-consumption that are the problem.

    It's definitely not the FAD that's the problem , it's that trawler you have just shown that's the problem .

    There should be a distinction made here between the use of FAD's for commercial fishing and their use for recreational fishing.

    I live on a island in the western central pacific and have had five wash up on the beach in the last month. From my research they are satellite linked to the ships, emit a fish aggregating signal, and sonar data along with gps is relayed back to the ship. When a school is detected the ship sails to the location then sends a signal which activates a beacon on the unit and deploy their nets. Far from being banned they have become more sophisticated.

    fads aren't the problem it is the techniques used are what create the problem because here in the Caribbean we commercial fishers used hook and line and catch only what we target

    Its commercial fishing, especially in municipal waters, that deplete fish stocks. Sustainable fishing methods such as traditional hook and line and passive gill net must be used with common sense to avoid entangling them on the mooring line. Blaming the FADs is looking at the problem upside down.

    Sad that every large fishing company commits this destruction simply for the benefit of shareholders, who literally do not give one flying crap about either the fisheries they rape and pillage, or the local people who suffer as a result, their inshore fishery wiped out by over fishing. 3 countries in particular will exploit it without a thought, and will not stop until it is all over. The film…2048 The End Of The Line…..is worth watching…..no more fish in 2048

    Seems evil when fished by nets. But such devices can be a part of a sustainable fishery when fished only with hand line or hook and line pole fishing. Untargeted species can be release live and in tact. If only people would be responsible and respectful to other life.

    Well, the Japanese still eat less beef per person and overall when compared to some countries (not naming names - the US, Argentina, U.K., France, Spain etc.) though may catch up if it copies the cultures of these. Anyway, not defending the Japanese or discounting the severity of over fishing, just balancing out the general hateful words towards the Japanese population in general below. GHG emissions from beef probably eclipses this as the overriding environmental issue of our time. Que no? (welcome feedback).

      James I think you're spot on.
      World elimination of fads is non realistic. Regulation of fads I agree with.
      Off the east australian coast about 20 fads are used for recreational use. 95% of the fish are mahi mahi and are fast growing prolific breeders.
      I support sustainability. I don't think that switching to beef is sustainable nor is wild catches of fish to feed the beef eaters.
      I'd like to know where they found the fads they removed? What law allows them to remove them?
      Or is it the case that greenpeace can do what it wants because it feels good?

    They need to ban netting, not FADS. The more artificial homes (reefs, fads, etc) fish get, the more they breed and the less pressure is placed on fishing in a particular area.
    The problem with the world is over population, which causes excessive pollution and strains natural resources. Mass slaughtering of fish in one area affects many areas, because some of these fish are migratory.
    Fish in their own territories, which may make them look after their local fish stocks & water quality.

    Look @zygopedelum , purse siening is a terrible method of fishing, however the use of FAD's and purse siening combined creates an extreme amount of bycatch. Bycatch is unwanted marine animals caught while fishing for other species. Because fish, such as tuna and dolphinfish, are attracted to FAD's, it's predators are attracted to FAD's because they see the fish as a source of food. So when the trawlers come in, not only are the target fish caught, but other marine species as well.

  • @zygopedelum
    @zygopedelum 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a terrible awareness campaign that has missed its mark, its not the FADs that are bad, its the method of fishing, purse seining is what needs to be banned, not the FADs....even without the FADs, tons of tuna can and will be caught with purse seining...this is a prime example of environmentalists not understanding fully of fishing practices, even if they succeed in banning FADs, they still will fail because purse seining will continue.

    This is misleading. The problem is not with FADs; rather the problem is with irresponsible fishing. The FADs around Vanuatu help the locals catch fish. This is done using hand lines. So... Please stay away Greenpeace since you think it's ok to rip out people's FADs.

    Fish Aggregating Devices do not imply capture, per se. Silly to overlook the added value of snorkelling and/or diving in/around such a manufact.
    Refrain from kneejerk greenie pseudo intellectual objections.
    Remember sustainability must also comply with financial aspects and that if you are living on Tonga or Kiribati or Maldives FADs can determine survival, well being and prosperity, sustainably.

    @gszikra 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Starving the tuna fish is echo-terrorism by greenpeace. Those guys are not green and they are not about peace.
    Taking care of ocean pastures is the right way. There is an imbalance of land agriculture depriving the ocean life
    of nutrients such as iron. Iron can gets to the ocean as dust blown by the wind. Modern agriculture = no dust, no
    iron, no plankton, no fish. Modern agriculture has to be extended to the ocean pastures also. Tuna population is
    down to 3%. Overfishing can achieve reduction to 30%. 3% is due to starvation. Greenpeace is starving the tuna fish.
