  • 07/03/2024 Chadron, NE. Not much left of the original CNW Cowboy Line. Chadron has a good sized yard still in use with the Nebraska Northwestern railroad interchanging with the BNSF in Crawford, NE. HWY 20 follows the old Cowboy line for a long ways. Many of the bridges have been converted for pedestrians. Valentine, NE. This Old CNW bridge is quite popular and makes for a very scenic walk or bike ride. Be better with trains though!

    Fantastic series of videos from out west Red. I haven’t been out there in nearly 30 years. Thanks for bringing back some fun railfanning memories. The geep is a GP7 originally built for the D&RGW, sold to CRIP, then to PNC, and finally CNW according to the NEBKOTA roster I found.

    Hello Red, an interesting video about the so-called Cowboy Line. This Nebraska Northwestern railroad is also a railroad that was taken over by another railroad. We have only had one state-owned railroad since 1920. There are still a few private railroads, but they use the state railroad network.
    Thanks for your video and best wishes to Iowa. Wolfgang

    I sadly have never had time to go to this end of the line. To think this line helped build the West and develop the rural country and now it looks like it's stuck in a Time Warp. Amazing that the Roundhouse is still there much less in fairly decent shape. Looking at the cars in the yard it seems like the majority are for storage or a contract repair shop. @1:15 check the old lettering bleeding through on that ballast car that whole group once being the backbone of the cement cars loaded in Mason City. The drone certainly helped to pick up the magnitude of that bridge especially when you look at the flatter country leading up to it. Glad you had good weather when you were there

    • @redsiowatrainvideos6645
      @redsiowatrainvideos6645  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @paulbergen9114 Definitely a time warp Paul! Boy if the CNW would have installed welded rail on that line it could easily have coal trains on it today. I rode along the abandoned line along 20 and could still make out a lot of the old line. You can tell coal is down by all the stored open hopper cars.

      This line was built all the way to Lander, Wyoming. Made it to Casper, Wyoming in 1886. In 1991 a flood on the White River destroyed some of the track between Crawford and Harrison Nebraska. At the time UP was pretty much calling the shots at CNW and I would bet this was a good excuse for abandonment. The scenic White River Canyon was advertised by CNW in the early days. I have no doubt it would still be in use today hauling oil, coal and frac sand if UP had upgraded the line. In fact in the late 1990's the nation went through a rail traffic grid lock as a result of so much abandonment. At least Nebraska had the sense to rail bank the abandoned CNW portions of the Right of Way.

      @@jamesrichardson559 this section of track was just the type that couldn't catch a break with economic downturns at the wrong time can any future Investments drifted away. I always did appreciate that this was geographically West of Denver. One of the people who show slides at a local group here in Milwaukee add some from when he was in the Air Force circa 1960 62 and got some photos of Lander before it was ripped up. A GP with some stock cars and small tank cars and in the background the foreboding Mountain continues to be a favorite of mine

    It’s been decades since I went through Chadron. The old CNW depot was a 2-story, wood frame building painted CNW red. The second floor housed division offices. I drove the Cowboy Line from Chadron to O’Neill on day. I passed one westbound manifest going 10 mph. The high bridge over the Niobrara River is quite spectacular.

      Here in Rhinelander Wi. at the end every C&NW building was painted battleship gray. They had just painted the 2 stall enginehouse gray in the 70s and a year later tore it down. We still have the brick passenger depot and the privately owned Monico depot was moved here in the late 80s. The rails were torn up in 84.

    Red, I hope you were able to visit Fort Robinson while in Crawford, Nebraska. The CNW rail is still there through the Fort property. The Fort is completely intact as it was in the 1890's. Visitors can stay overnight and a good restaurant is in main building. The fort is located near the mouth of the White River Canyon. Google earth the Fort and the rail line.

    Interesting. I wonder if UP railbanked this line when they bought CNW or just abandoned it. I guess they found no shortlines willing to lease the abandoned section. They may have sold it to an entity who turned it into a rail to trail. A really fine looking bridge tho. Nice video, Red!

    The opening drone footage of the Nebraska Northwestern Railroad's Chadron, Nebraska rail yard gave us a good overview of the former Chicago & North Western Railroad yard. Those two-bay open hopper cars at the beginning of the video are former CNW two-bay sand or bentonite covered hopper cars. After Nebraska Northwestern acquired the CNW two-bay hopper cars, they must have cut the tops covers off the covered hoppers to use as open top hoppers cars. Back in 1980, my late wife and our two sons took a trip out west. One of my wife's sisters was married to a TV reporter/anchor. They were living in Lincoln, Nebraska at that time. We spent a couple of days visiting them and then drove up to Fremont, Nebraska to follow the Cowboy Line. I do not remember if I caught any trains along the line at we were driving on U.S. 20. I remember that we stay in motel in or near Valentine. We stopped at Neligh, Nebraska to see the CNW depot. There was a 40-foot boxcar at the depot. We stopped in Chadron, Nebraska. I took some slides in Chadron. They are in storage currently. From Chadron we went north to Rapid City, South Dakota and then headed west into Wyoming to see the sights. (Post 15 July 2024 at 1917 CDT.)
