Throughout most of the 70's and early 80's my mom was a Navy wife. Talk about strong, independent women! All military wives I have ever met have always been awesome about doing what had to be done, taking on whoever stood in their way, etc. Mom and her friends could change the oil in the car, one woman had a tackle box with medical supplies, and she'd been known to stitch up a wound or two when we'd get hurt. Although married, they all spent most of the year as single parents when the guys would be out to sea, or on a deployment and I have the utmost respect for them all. I remember mom belting out this song in the car on more than one occasion during our carpools to school. Miss ya bunches mom!!!!!!!!

I'm a child of the 70's and I also remember hearing this song but not really understanding it's importance. My grandpa was one of "those" men. I remember some comments he made. One was "women were put on earth to serve man." He'd say he was kidding, but I question it. He also said that women shouldn't be in the workplace making important decisions! When I told him I was going to law school, I thought he was going to have a stroke! I had to walk away from grandpa! Don't misinterpret this...my grandpa was a great man that provided extremely well for his family's future. My grandma was his Queen and he proved that everyday of their lives! But, that knuckle-dragging, chauvinistic thinking was strong in gramps! I also need to thank all the women from the generation before me for finally taking a stand - the stand that allows me to be in the profession of my choice! From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all!

Yet despite that this was one of the stupidest songs I'd ever heard. A weak-sauce bra-burning protest song that made more money for Gloria Steinem and Bella Abzug than it ever would for Helen Reddy, and for me it was emblematic of how 60s protest and rock music had burned itself almost completely out by 1972. Well, the joke is on the feminists now -- because you can't even get a Supreme Court justice to acknowledge what a woman even _is,_ assuming one ever existed. Trans and gender-fluid apparently have more rights and political power than the half of the population that put up with so much shit to finally achieve their due. This song has about as much impact as a sparrow farting in the forest.

I believe your facts are not accurate and misleading. A lot of it depended on what state you lived in. Credit cards didn’t exist too long before this song. It started with Bank-Americard and by this time most any college student qualified for a card. Around this time LAPD and LACFD lowered their height, weight and strength standards so women qualified when a man of equal or stronger/taller/ weight were still ineligible. I want the ‘best person’ protecting or rescuing me or my family, not a quota hire. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY especially in safety and or military situations

      Most feminist anthems were, ironically,
written by men (including this one,
written by John Madara & David White).

I went to a taping of the Midnight Special as a teenager, and they had mats on the floor instead of chairs. You had to sit on the floor I guess the television audience would think that it was a bigger venue is my guess. In Hollywood back in those days they had people out on Hollywood Blvd. giving out free tickets to various shows. Anything done before a live audience, game shows, comedy shows, you name it

My mother had the crap beaten out of her by her first husband. She went to the police station with his still red hand prints on her neck hoping they would finally take her seriously. The police just said, "Ma'am, go home to your husband." This was only just in the 60's.

Love your new intro, btw. Attention-grabbing. It says "Schwiiiing!" :)
This song was both a reflection of the self-empowerment of women, and one of the products that aided in the cause. I should think that there is a tremendous need for such solidarity and progress through songs and other art offerings, as those same freedoms are now at risk of being taken away, which is wrongheaded, wronghearted, backward, and low class. No civilized people act to make others less free. It should not even be on the docket. Mercy and kindness never sides with an oppressor. It is a simple matter of kindness and mercy. RIP kind Helen.
