I'm one of the women who she inspired with I Am Woman. It many years later got me through my Computer Science degree at the age of 45 in 2006.
We miss her.
She wasn't all over the place or straining her voice or sounding constipated and sang this song to perfection. One of THE most beautiful songs from Andrew Lloyd Weber and the best rendition in my opinion.
Instantly recognisable voice which immediately takes you back to days in the mid 70s.
I saw her live on her last tour in Agoura Hills, CA at a small club. She sang the %&#$ paint off the walls - she was early 70s and still had every bit of her awesome talents. And was absolutely charming. She should be in the RRHOF without question.
Everything she sang was beautiful. A unique voice so lovely.

Pure clean notes without all the face scrunches, warbles, trills, etc., that current artists feel the need to express. I'd forgotten how beautiful she was.
Thank you -- it's nice to hear someone else considers the current fashion for warbling is just a mask for the fact that the "artist" can't hold a clean note on pitch for more than half a bar.
I do think it's cute but maybe not necessary when current vocalists grimace a little on one side of their face to emphasize a note. 💕

Helen is important in the career of Olivia Newton John, firstly after Olivia failed to win the Eurovision Song Contest, she had her first big hit in the USA, Helen advised her to relocate to the USA to be available there. Later in the 70s Helen invited Olivia to a dinner party, Alan Carr was there,struggling to find a leading lady for Grease, he found Olivia that night

Saw her a few times at the corner shop on Darling Point Road, Sydney when she lived across the road 10-12 years ago. She was always smiling.
I had such a crush on Helen Reddy, back in the 70's.
This video reminds me very much why that was so.

In my humble opinion, Helen Reddy was the most underrated female singer of the rock era bar none! She had more hits than most of the so called "more popular singers", she had a better voice, and sold more records than they did! Not to mention Helen was the first Australian to win a Grammy, she has a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, she was the first pop female singer to win an American Music Award, she was the first western singer to be invited to sing in China, she had the second most Top 20 hits on the Hot 100 in the 70s next to Olivia Newton John (who only had more because she did a few duets and weren't solo performance) etc. etc. etc. R.I.P. Helen, you were the best!
Helen Ready was underrated in Australia but she was a house whole name in the US because of her hits and tv programs.
I never knew she passed away until today. Now I’m sad for awhile. She was part of my youth.

But if her label had let her, she would have been able to show what an incredible voice she had - she was mostly strong-armed into singing "commercial" music. As a result, she rarely had the opportunity (except in live shows) to show her amazing range.

Best female singer I've ever heard. I fell in love with her voice when I was about 12. The sweetest singing voice. Thank you for covering Helen. She and Mac Davis passed away on the same day - September 29, 2020.

Great Australian Singer I grew up in her era and was a fan of hers read a story on her only a few months ago how she gave it all away and came home t Australia to retire and lead a simple life. Thank you Phil for recognizing her. RIP Helen.

Fil, I have a special needs (autistic) son who is now 30 years old.
Growing up, he loved to watch many movies over and over! One of his favorite movies was a Disney movie 'Pete's Dragon'. Of course, Helen was one of the stars and sang several songs in it.
But the one song she sang (and I heard it so many times!) that I vividly remember was 'Razzle Dazzle Day'.

My elder brother had an LP of the soundtrack of Pete's Dragon. I managed to buy a VHS video of the film and loved listening to the music, particularly Candle on the Water - such was the figurative way of mentioning the lighthouse in the movie. Thanks, Helen for giving us the privilege of listening to your songs. Rest in peace dear Lady.
Pete's Dragon was my exposure to her as well! It was one of the few movies that I was super obsessed with when I was little (you know how kids are, wearing out their favorite VHS tapes...) I later got into the rest of her music, and now it feels like at 25 I'm one of the youngest people who even knows her name lmao. Glad to see I wasn't the only Pete's Dragon-obsessed kid out there! It still holds up to the test of time, even if the animation is dated. Can't believe there was a whole Disney song describing how a bunch of adults want to beat/kill a kid XD
Thank you so much for covering Helen Reddy. An exceptional 70s singer with a velvet voice. She was a tremendous success here in the states. We enjoyed her music immensely. Smooth clear calm effortless range. A person like I, who can only play the stereo, does not always appreciate how truly gifted a performer is. Thank you for highlighting Helen Reddy. She's been one of my favorite female singers since I was a teen. At the time she was popular, the music industry was stacked with female talent: Bette Midler, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, etc., but she stood out because of the purity of her voice. She could belt them out and was in a class of her own.
It's funny that you noticed that she sung from her diaphragm! My dad first introduced the practice to me when we watched old Doris Day movies. He pointed out that you'd never see Doris take a breath because she pushed it out from her diaphragm. So, I immediately noticed Helen doing the same thing!
Thanks, for giving some of Helen's history. I always found it very interesting. She never got the accolades she deserved. Her rendition of "Somewhere in the Night" remains my favorite.

Helen Reddy had one of the most distinct and recognizable voices in recording history…unmistakable, like Peter Cetera, Roy Orbison, Bing Crosby, Julie Andrews, Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash.
AHhh... the incredible Helen Reddy... who doesn't love her? Beautiful voice, beautiful and talented woman and a HUGE voice for equality and justice for not only women but for all. As an advocate for social justice and human rights, Hellen Reddy is one of my heroes. Love this song so much, so beautiful, just wonderful. RIP Ms. Reddy.

Helen Reddy was a huge party of my musical memory. I heard her on the radio all through my school years in NZ. Interesting to see that someone I enjoyed so much had so much real skill to back that popularity
I constantly listened to the radio in that period of my life: in the car, at home, at work, etc. More than once I had to collect myself and my goosebumps when this song was played. She was a consummate performer and her facial expressions during this performance perfectly coincided with the sentiments she sang. And there you have it. Thank you for this special analysis of this special lady, Fil.
She made it look/sound so easy. You ears are amazing. You hear every nuance. Thank God there wasnt autotone then. We heard real talent and ability then, which was pretty cool.

Just watched the video of Helen singing 'Don't Cry for me Argentina' when she is a little older ( 40s?). She did a stunning job and did some belting out.
I like she just sang the song, she didn’t make any body or hand motions. Just sang it cleanly. To me, it makes listening to her wonderful vocals easier than if there were distractions to watch.
Unfortunately, that was kind of her downfall on stage. People react better
to entertainers than just singers, generally.
Helen had an amazing talent, and she eventually learned to be more animated on stage.
Magnificent Failure Her downfall? Reddy, Anne Murray and Karen Carpenter all had tremendous careers without histrionics.

Thank you for this very loving and insightful look at the talents and unique gifts Helen had. I am 59 and from the US and was a fan from the very beginning, from this actual song. Every time I hear this song I want to cry. She not only has such great technique but amazing emotive ability. Just as an FYI here in the US it was not just a tv special but a comedy/variety series that ran an entire summer. She was overlooked at the time and was such an influence on my life. I am so happy to see people showing their appreciation of her now that she sadly has passed. I am also thrilled for her that at the end she was content and overjoyed having wonderful relationships with her 2 children. She was diagnosed with dementia 5 years ago and it seemed her last day was spent with her daughter and she was able to take it all in. Thanks for this. Your love for her talent touches me kind soul. When we can share such joy and passion thru the gift of music it is a special gift. Thanks for passing it on.

Takes me back to my mom jamming to her Helen Reddy 8 track tapes while she would clean the house. The sound of her voice is so unique. Absolutely beautiful unique tone. I'm six years old again for a split second. I also remember her in Pete's Dragon. Her voice is the sound of my youth forgotten.
I was a child of the 70s and always loved seeing Helen perform. She has a very natural singing voice. I was very sad when she passed. I just finished watching a movie about her life on Netflix called "I Am Woman" it was a great movie. R.I.P. Helen. I miss you.😪

I can understand why you would want to play it all the way through, you can’t help but want to hear more. Helen Reddy’s voice and even her expressions as she’s singing pulls you in.
Absolutely fascinating. Definitely one of my favorite analysis. That business with the breathing/ diaphram actually explained something visually to me, I was unable to comprehend despite many 'vocal coach' videos trying. LOL, Fil + a tight fitting top = ah ha clarity ! As for Helen, she was immaculate in what she did, and her voice had just a hint of nasality that provided some added interest and distinction to her work. I know what I like, but I don't always know exactly why. That's where these videos come in.

Thank you Fil... I hadn't heard of Helen's passing but it's the passing of an era - the hope of the early 70s when people thought the whole world could and would change for the better. Helen gave voice to that spirit in "I am Woman" and it still rings out clear and true today. It's good to be reminded when some of what was fought for is at risk of being stripped away by people who only have concern for power and not for individual freedoms.
Helen stood clear and strong, just the way you described her vocalizing, and there were plenty of folks who hated her for challenging the status quo. She had an honesty and a courage that came through her performances.
Her voice always comforted me - it was clear as a bell and could be as gentle and moving as it was strong and bold. In Pete's Dragon, the song "There's Room for Everyone in this World" has a message that only gets more important as the years pass. Candle on the Water is a personal favorite that makes me cry (I sang it to my niece when she was just a toddler) Thank you for honoring her. I'm glad I heard of her death this way, from someone who feels like a friend. Rest in peace, Helen, and thank you for what you gave us…
It seems like we are going to have to do a rerun of the 70s. Who will play Helen's part? I was in my 20s then with energy. Who will play my part? My granddaughters shouldn't have to go back in time to the bad old days.

We just have to help them ring some bells for freedom. I believe their generation will fight the good fight. And we can encourage them by being honest about what we've witnessed, and by having faith in them.

Why don't they invest this much energy toward abused children who were born and live horrible lives. The 2 most frightening words to a child are " mother's boyfriend". And then sometimes it's good ole mom. Not all women should be mothers. Same for men/fathers.

If we all came together to put funds and energy into family planning, educating young people (both male and female) about the realities and risks of sexual activity, provided affordable daycare instead of declaring war on women. But this issue became a knee-jerk reaction. They always pushed that abortion equals murder, when (before Roe v. Wade) it was poor and middle-class women who were being murdered (or permanently scarred) by illegal, unqualified abortionists - or, just as tragic, were trying to terminate their pregnancies out of desperation and forever harming themselves. This is a "win" for those who don't truly understand that the abortion issue is about the life of the mother and the existing children who are already more than a family can support. And there have always been abortions. It's not anything women WANT to do; it's what they MUST do.
If Mitch McConnell had been censured and possibly impeached for obstructing Barack Obama's Supreme Court nomination, if he had been held accountable for slowing down the judicial nominations of all kinds for 8 years and then ramming them through under Trump, we wouldn't be in this predicament. Too many words late at night! But God save our Republic from the corruption and power games of those who clearly have lost respect for a nation of laws and a great tradition of checks and balances.

I had a big crush on Helen Reddy when I was little. I saw her on television in the States many times and remember hearing her on my mom's records. My mom also had the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack album as well. I didn't always understand the songs, but I loved her voice. Thank you for your always respectful and thoughtful analysis. Though I was too young to remember her then, I remember Helen performing "I Am Woman"--she had me convinced. As always, you teach and remind me: your mention of songwriters composing without the mindset regarding singers' vocal abilities(in opera and musical theater)did both. A fine R.I.P. if you ask me. Helen’s technical history was all new to me and I thank you for it all. The facts around and about her musical history were more familiar but not quite that comforting. Still, there’s no one to blame; it’s all just time.

I was nine when this song came out, although I can remember hearing it throughout my youth. Growing up as a hard rock Child of the 70s and 80s. Secretly back then I always loved Helen's voice and songs🙂
