After Burner Arcade Machine Deluxe Moving Cabinet | One of the Best Arcade Machines Ever

  • Remember the Afterburner cabinet that moved? The 360-degree After burner cabinet John Connor edition from Terminator 2? This arcade cabinet is a thing of dreams; we all want to have a go one day.
Imagine our surprise when we stumbled on a working Afterburner moving cabinet at #EGX2017. Afterburner is a vomit-inducing arcade machine with the same gut-wrenching forces you'd expect blasting about in a fighter jet. This is a real piece of 90s nostalgia; Afterburner might have made it onto the home games consoles but there was no way to recreate the arcade experience in the home. This was something you had to visit the arcade to get.
Afterburner is a well sought arcade machine for that reason. Finding working moving machines is getting harder day by day, so if you want to live our your John Connor fantasies then get down to a retro arcade event organised by Play. You will need to provide your own dirtbike and Guns and Roses tapes. YOOOUU COULD BE MIIIIIIIIIIINE!

I still remember how cool it was to see and play this in the late 80s at a local arcade! It cost nearly $1US to play at the time, but was an experience unlike any other. Galloping Ghost Arcade has one these days, but the hydraulics don’t work on it, and they decided it wasn’t worth fixing, so while it can be played, it remains stationary.

My grandparents had a caravan on the east coast of England in the 80s n 90s (cleethorpes). And the campsite had a huge arcade, and in that arcade was after burner. It was the first 50p arcade machine I ever played on. Up until then, they was all 10p and 20p a play.

For me, it was virtual on and the one with its full size cockpit and IIRC it was 4 players. It blew my mind away as a kid and loved it. I unfortunately only got to play it once or twice. There aren't even pictures of it online sadly of the version I saw. It was no shit like a full size cockpit. It was fucking huge and took up like 4-8 arcades worth of space! You actually had to sort climb into it. It wasn't the ones where it was a seat with just an simple overhang. The screen was fucking huge and the inside was shaped like a gundam/mobile suit cockpit. You could see the game from anywhere in the arcade because it was fucking massive.

I pumped so many tokens into this machine at my local arcade back in the 80s. They had three Afterburner cabinets; two stand ups and one sit down. The stand ups were one token and the sit down was two tokens. It was definitely worth paying double for the sit down experience.

There was also a time when those Daytona cabinets were actually working and that lasted years. I went to the Trocadero regularly in 94/96. The machines were always in good order. I saw some standing cabinets of Terminator 2 the arcade game, house of the dead, etc.

Yeah man, arcades in the US in the 90s was awesome. They used to be EVERYWHERE, just like in the movie. PACKED with games, row after row. Big cabinets, small cabinets, pinball, multiplayer stuff.... they had everything.
Then they changed the laws to intentionally target and get rid of them (it was seen as a hangout spot for teenage delinquents), and killed them all in one fell swoop
They are coming back veeeeery slowly, although a lot of them are mostly about winning tickets to trade in for prizes.
    It's sad.

What do you search for when you're looking for just arcade cabinets that didn't have joysticks? I'm talking about arcade cabs such as: 2 player standing gun shooting games, racers where you sat down and it had pedals, steering wheel & optional manual shifter, sit down cockpits for flying games, sit down motorcycles that allowed you to lean far left or right, etc. Is there a name for those type of arcade games? I can never find a master list or videos about them because most vids are about joystick cabinets or pinball machines. Everyone's all about these cheap bartop arcade cabinets which is great for the number of games they can play. However, they're missing the awesome sauce of the arcade games I'm talking about. The ones that moved, rotated, gave force feedback, the ones that had guns that vibrated when you fired, etc. that's what Rasberry Pi cabs CAN'T give you.

I remembered it too cheap! Having a read up, most people remember that it was a quid, a dollar or 200 yen a go!
Other examples of mad expensive machines were Afterburner 360 at 2 pound a pop and full scale Ridge Racer was a fiver. All 3 of these machines actually lost money, but were loss leaders to get people in to the arcades.

I remember correctly, this machine cost like 25k back in 1986.

Can't find a reliable price, but it was up there. They were loss leaders to get folks in to spend money on the more profitable cabs

it cant cost TOO much to build a giant metal box with some motors right? these things should be open source 3d printed with those big new 3d printers and or just modified chairs and this should be a common thing you can make cheap

Good spot, a slip up in the description there. Got a bit excited.
I mention the R360 in some of the other comments I think, although this is an older vid now.
