  • Large Maples are my favourite bonsai. In this video I shape a few smaller Maples and a Large Twin Trunk.
I show pruning with scissors and using the plucking method.

Out of all the bonsai tutorials or "How-to-care" videos I've seen this is by far the BEST! Not only are you informative but you are real! Some of the people doing videos like this one are so sterile and boring and robotic... you are very entertaining, sir! Thank you! I've subscribed

You do an awesome job! Your trees look like gems! Thought the bigger one looked just fine. When you finished it was like, oh yes, that's why japanese maples are so beautiful.
Sad those lazy people stole your videos to try and promote themselves because of your experienced work.

It's a video about maples, but I can't take my eyes off that beautiful juniper. It's a very art-deco shape. Now I want one like that.

Hurray for a personal mic with wind protection!! It vastly improves your wonderful, informative videos all the more so. Thank you for your continuing efforts to keep improving these so we aren't distracted by loud planes, variations in audio when you turn away, windy days, etc. Your bright shirts are far more acceptable as easy visual intrusions than what we've had to 'put up with', especially for those with hard of hearing issues. ;) :D :D

I do the leaf plucking to a mature maple growing in my garden, it isn’t a bonsai but I like to thin it out a bit just to give it a nicer shape and expose some of the branching, I never knew that anybody used that method for bonsai, now I won’t feel like I’m doing something I shouldn’t next time I’m plucking my maple, thank you Peter for all your valuable lessons.

That is my First book and I deliberately kept it simple and used pictures of mainly my own made trees and not imported specimens. People used to criticise that book because it had "rubbish" trees - but they missed the point - my aim was to make bonsai simple and accessible to everyone. That is still my approach to bonsai.

Another great video Peter, didn't know about the leaf plucking as I am starting to look at something other than the 30 pines I have done so far. It would have been nice to get more closeups of the cross branches and verticals before you cut them a couple times to reinforce what they look like.
The maples I have seen here so far are about $75 4' tall with long trunks, probably trimmed that way, do they back bud down the trunk, it's expensive so I will have to see how to develop lower branches before chopping one in 1/2.

I to am a beginner and started out with buying two bonsai scissors from Nutscene. The pair cost about 500 sek, or 50 USD. If you need a good pair of more rigid pruners to cut bigger branches I recommend going to an old barn sale. I found myself a pruner from the 30's there, better than a new for the same price, which was no more than 80 sek, or about 8 USD.
Good Luck and hope you enjoy the art!

Your trees look amazing, not only the maples but also the juniper on the left; couldn't stop myself from admiring it all the time. I like the big maples, but being a beginner, I focus more on the little ones. I wonder which are the stages of development for a maple like the little ones you show here. I mean did you allow them to grow in the field, or bigger pot and how tall they had to grow to get that thickness?
