- In this video Corin demonstrates how to defoliate an Acer bonsai in order to asses the structure and prune. By defoliating the tree will have a second flush of finer growth that with the added structure prune will improve the tree's elegance.

Brilliant. I was inspired by this and defoliated and pruned my okay but cluttered butterfly and desojo maples kept the trees shaded as the greenhouse is full of tomatoes and chillies! Thanks for the inspiration. everything seems to be growing back fine.

You can never visualise the tree looking like that at the end but always explained well and makes sense why it does. Is this something you do just on the larger tree's or does it apply to maples ? Another great video guy's keep em coming!!

I saw a Herons video yesterday which mentioned how defoliating like this can make the plant make larger leaves.
I was trying to think of an explanation for this as it is opposite to many trees. But the node drawing moisture and nutrients from the cut point would make a stronger hence larger leaf.
No it doesn’t. They don’t push larger leaves after defoliation. That info isn’t correct. However i would add that after defoliation don’t put it in a greenhouse or poly tunnel and don’t feed until new leaves are out.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have a Japanese maple about the same size that is the perfect candidate for these procedures. Now I don't have to be anxious about doing what needs to be done! One question though, since I don't have a greenhouse...would full shade be appropriate for it's recovery period?

I was surprised to see the defoliation of a steel, I had understood that deciduous trees could not defoliate, except in autumn, when its leaves are already beginning to fall to improve the entry of light and favor sprouting for the following spring. Question about the leaf stems. You keep them when you’re clipping the leaves, but it looks like they’re being removed when you strip them by hand. What is the reason for keeping them (when clipping)?

Thanks for the very useful video, Corin. I see that you take off the leaf stalks too, when you defoliate with your hands. Isn't that detrimental for new growth?
this techniques you do lose a few more of them, but on a healthy tree it has no effect.

Question: After spring defoliation (and a mild pruning of healthy 10 year old acer palmatum ), could i still repot it and hard prune it this fall/winter?
You would normally hard prune and repot in Spring
Some of those scars are very big. Perhaps the previous owner didn't use cut paste?

Hello sir. My JM's are all in pots, and all of them are leaf scorched and look horrible from our massive heat in Texas. The watering isnt the issue. I'm positive it's leaf scorch. They look horrible. Won't cutting every single leaf off KILL it? I'm frightened but I'll try. Can you advise? It's still so so hot and still early summer here...
Defoliating it won't kill it, but ideally should be done end of June, so you are a bit late, I can't advise about keeping them in Texas. Because as much as I'd like to visit, I never have.
Are the gaping trunk holes intentional?

yes you can, but they have a smaller leaf, so its not always as necessary

Leave the leaf petioles, but then goes fingertip mode, ripping off the petiole of every leaf pulled.
Actually most petioles are still intact. Just showing different methods, use what works for you.
I just wanna cry when i see how fast you prune the tree. It takes me half an hour to decide which branch i should remove or let🥹
