everyone who's worked with Mariah always say that she's a musical genius. the way she writes songs, comes up with her lyrics, composes her melodies, how she stacks layers and harmonizes with herself in different octaves, how she rewrites and rearranges her songs for remixes, etc. this woman is just otherworldly!!! give her her flowers people

I didn't like her "new" music and she lost her mind.
The last I saw her, she made a complete fool of herself, when she stopped "performing" (she was not singing) in the middle of her set on live TV.
That was a complete disaster and unprofessional, for a singer of her caliber.
She goes around "playing" a Diva, when she is not.
Her best work was long ago.

Loved seeing Narada talk about Mariah!!
Mariah's voice and songwriting skills are not to be played with! So glad she got inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame this year!!
She clearly took all the tips she learned from her first album and then started co-producing all her records from Album 2.
She's stated that at the beginning she made it clear with the label that she would not be singing songs written by anyone else but herself and any writing partner she would wish to have and I'm glad she did because her demo tape (before she was signed) itself had 3 Number One songs including Vision Of Love. The label just had to trust her!
She's also stated that she didn't realize her input with the songs being made on her debut album was actually her producing (she was also shy and intimated by the big names she worked with), hence she negotiated for production credit on her sophomore album when she fully realised her power as an artist.

I truly believe Mariah is a good soul, a good person but she’s probably not afraid to look mean and Diva to the others because of the business she evolved in.

I once came across a comment about Mariah Carey saying: "It's easier to find another earth than to find another Mariah" and what can I say, it's true. This lady is talented beyond belief and her voice in my humble opinion has the perfect timbre and tone. The unmistakable beauty of her sound and how colourful and powerful her voice can be....in this department Mariah has no equals. The only other female singer that comes to my mind with a comparable ability to display various sound within one voice was Maria Callas in the operatic genre. Mariah is the full package artist with her instrument, craft, perfect ear, ability to produce melody and text. People mostly do not acknowledge her out of envy, as she is so ridiculously gifted. But her life was no fairytale and she worked her behind off to get where she is. She respects people before her and after her. She is a class artist and definitely my favourite voice and singer. She's family.

One few examples that does it all is Taylor Swift, but she isn't in the same caliber when it comes to singing and lyricist as Mariah. Mariah is a musical genius, no one has yet to match her, to this day. And that's the real tea.

Narada is magic. But I wish these alpha male producers tried to celebrate artists when they’re fully grown adults and even tried to celebrate older new talents. And also give credits to the emotional aspect of what makes these artists stars (Narada does
when he speaks about love). Whitney and Mariah were amazing artists who peaked way too early in terms of their craft as performers because their blueprints were build on the blind arrogance of youth and the illusion that it allows if that makes sense. It’s not real when kids don’t really know what they’re signing up for but older men use that for money. It doesn’t have to be that way. Whitney was just a small kid impersonating a sophisticated adult with the illusion of perfection that that allows and it naturally backfired. It was a fabrication, a gorgeous one but still something that was fabricated and therefore couldn’t last. That was not who she really was as a human and therefore as an artist. Mariah nearly suffered the same fate but had the smarts to be strong enough to find herself circa Butterfly, Charm-bracelet, TEOM, MEMOIRS, MIAM and CAUTION, what an artistic career. Mariah became her own master unlike Whitney and was absolutely instinctively right not to repeat experiences with Walter and such producers who only cared about business and alpha Male control. Not to discredit the genius of Narada but I Don’t Wanna Cry is one of her least exciting n.1 song and that’s because there’s really little of her in there. The chorus isn’t that memorable melodically and would’ve no doubt been dismissed had she not been banging the big boss and wasn’t coming off of a string of n.1 songs she had written.
Vision of Love was the engine behind that era until Emotions came. It’s so very interesting to listen to the great Narada and how super technical and left brain you have to be to be that great of a producer,
Instrumentalist and/or engineer to be that kind of studio master and how a true superstar is the result of the work of these hidden magicians who are often unsung to the masses but combined with the more instinctive talent, emotions and charisma of the star/artist that can be magic. It’s a bittersweet business because the artist is out there touring, promoting, burning really while these guys who stay safely in the shadows and in the studios make more money. It really can only be a teamwork because no human can assume all these responsibilities and be great at all of them at the same time. Mariah is an exception. I can’t think of anyone who came as close in terms of controlling the whole spectrum like she does. She still needs other producers and writers but wouldn’t really need that if she had to do it all by herself. She probably could. Not TS who wouldn’t be who she is without Antonof (or whatever his name is) or Adele without Rick Rubin and Max Martin etc…A superstar artist who writes and produces fully? No such thing.
Mariah is as close as it gets. Stevie, George Michael, Elton John maybe. Not that many for sure.

    Excellent episode!
However, some information does not add up: Narada claims that Mariah Carey and him wrote 4 songs during their recording session and he says that 3 of them were part of her first album project. That is incorrect as the only song co-written by Narada Michael Walden on this album is "I Don't Wanna Cry". He did some additional production on "Vision Of Love" and "There's Got To Be A Way" but both tracks were written by other people (Ben Margulies, Ric Wake and Mariah Carey).
So it would mean that there are 3 unreleased tracks in the vault and not one ... ?
I wish he could clarify that soon!

@@Sttephy30 Thanks! Are you 100% sure ? Cause "I Lose Control" was released way later in late 1993 on the 2d LP of Pennye Ford. So it means they would have kept the demo on the side for quite some time...
Plus, Narada did claim the 3 tracks were used in Mariah's first album, so it does not add up.
And yes, there is still one missing track + the one in the vault.

@@daikisoulrnb7815 Yes, Mariah recorded all of the songs they did. When Mariah released her The Rarities album in 2020, Walden tried to reach her, and tell her that he had the other songs, and I Lose Control was one he mentioned. I don't know the other 2 songs names tho.

Just on Bacharach and people who knew how to write songs - I remember an interview with Burt where he said not to be scared of wrting something (a tune) that people can remember. What a great guideline! It seems to me that if you can't sing it, it doesn't grab the heart as much. And on Britney, this may be musical heresy but there's an album on Spotify covering her songs a bossanova and I'm fascinated with it because the lyrics you never noticed really jump out at you (the way they do in a Pomplamoose cover!). One last thing - can we have a whole episode on Jaco stories please ;)
