I love love love the workshop version of hadestown to bits and pieces but I truly believe this and the wedding song are better In the Broadway version; I'm not comparing singers at all (because it's pointless and makes no sense) but I believe the Broadway lyrics of those two songs convey better the ”I'm helplessly in love with you and the world, and you make me sing something that will make it better” In the workshop version you can still tell he loves her, but the songs come off more as a brag of ”you should marry me because I have cool powers” and less ”my love and devotion to you is such, that the earth sings along”. In short I'm glad they managed to find a balance in the lyrics that makes Orpheus sound more humble and lovestruck and I love both albums with all my heart for different reasons.
I think, and this is just for me, it's better in this version than broadway, for three reasons. One is that in this version, Orpheus begins prideful. and that is his flaw. Euridice falls in love with him partially because of his confidence and pride, but then realizes it will be the death of them both. And in order to get her back, he has to learn to humble himself, beg and sing of his devotion, and the devotion of others. His skill only gets him so far, he has to risk everything, recognize his failing, and focus on Euridice and Hades. And in the end, he still fails, and we don't know why. Was it pride striking again? Which is also SOO greek myth, they sure love inescapable hubris :') And the other reason, is that in this one, Orpheus has such personality. in the Broadway version, he's such a wilting daisy :P he needs someone else to talk him up, and his flaw is less certain. What, he's too focused on helping everyone? He's too selfless? It's just more clear for narrative and characterization, to give him that pride. Also, it feels like Euridice has more agency in this one. She's called a survivor, Orpheus admires her for something other than beauty, and he tells her he'll make her feel alive as a little flirt. In the broadway one, it feels like her feelings are being dictated to her.
I think the reason he fails is because of how he's pride and the trust they had in each other was broken. That's what make him doubt himself, he know he already failed before and he also doesn't trust Eurydice anymore like he used to (I think this is show in Promises, they start talking about the promises they both broken and it seems like they resolved the issue but the seed of doubt was already planted )
I like the London version (watched a "slime tutorial" of it), it has the same lyrics as the broadway one but Orpheus delivers his lines with more confidence and the Hermes lines are said by him. "I'm not like any man you've met", etc. And it also keeps the "i'm working on a song that will bring the world back into tune" part, which to me makes so much sense considering the setting they're in. I love that part and I think it actually fits his idealist nature better. "he could make you see how the world could be", after all. love the lyrics and performances for the original show as well, though. a real gem! specially the two "come home with me"s lol and him calling her a survivor and that he sees someone stronger than him. wish this was on spotify
If I may, I remember in the original myth it was his lack of self confidence that was his fatal flaw. After all, he was a singer and poet born to the king of a warrior-prizing city-state. That may have been changed for this, but that’s all I have to say
Orpheus’ confidence that Eurydice is gonna fall in love with him is like... AVPM Harry levels of confident lmao
OMFG YEAS
you're tall and fun and pretty, you're really really skinny,
