In this song, Damon's Orpheus is shattered with the grief of losing Eurydice, whereas Reeve's Orpheus is angry and desperate and still willing to fight the system that took her away. I love both, but the differences are fascinating

This is absolutely the song Orpheus mourns the "death" of Eurydice. Wait For Me was sung like he was in denial and refused to give her up, but this... He's in agony from losing the love of his life being six feet under.

Well I mean not to be an ass about it and I'm truly sorry if I come across as one, but wait for me was supposed to be the like "well I'll go get her back then" he isn't quite aware that she belongs to Hades at that point. This is his song of mourning, he starts off grieving her and then slowly convinces himself that he might be able to steal her back somehow. That Hades is tricking him.

The way I feel about both versions is this one is the one that convinced Persophone to try to bargain with Hades. The sorrow here is so pognient. The Broadway version was the one that made the workers rise up.

Both versions of this song are great, I love them so much. But the desperate sound of Orpheus in this one is just more powerful. The lack of hope. This is the true low that Broadway missed. Orpheus needed to lose hope. I felt he was almost too naive and almost immediately bounced back in the Broadway version.

This song is my favorite. Epic iii is arguably the best song but there's something about Orpheus' grief that makes this song hit harder. As someone in love with The Arts some of the lines hit very close to home.
He lost her and therefore his inspiration and he would never be able to use his talents and passion the same way again

  • @sophfiystevens6063

I’ll never forgive them for changing this song as much as they did for Broadway. The grief is so audible and wonderfully expressed. It’s /this/ song that expresses all of his love that moves the workers and Persephone to help him.

If it's true what they say
If my love is gone for good
They can take this heart away
They can take this flesh and blood
Take my mouth that kissed her mouth
Take my tongue that sung her praise
Take my arms that used to reach out
In the dark to where she lay
If it's true what they say
    I'll be on my way
If it's true what they say
If there's nothing to be done
If there's no part to be played
If there's no song to be sung
Take this voice, take these hands
    I can't use them anyway
Take this music and the memory
Of the muse from which it came
If it's true what they say
    I'll be on my way
We can all be on our way
If it's true what they say
But the ones who tell the lies
    Are the solemnest to swear
And the ones who load the dice
Always say the toss is fair
And the ones who deal the cards
Are the ones who take the tricks
With their hands over their hearts
While we play the game they fix
And the ones who speak the words
Always say it is the last
And no answer will be heard
To the question no one asks
So I ask you as a brother
And I ask you as a friend
And I ask you as a lover
And I ask you once again
Is it true what they say?

Reeve took over in the run before London as well. It’s understandable that an actor as young and talented as Damon wouldn’t risk sticking with a musical that isn’t guaranteed success.
I believe there are a lot of actors, even new actors that could have done the role justice.

Fair enough. It’s without question that he doesn’t have the range or control for any iteration of Orpheus though, and that’s the biggest issue I take with it. In the various shows I saw, his technique meant hitting those notes was a gamble every night, and it showed on nights he decided to sing in lower key and only hit the highs required. He’s too punk for a voice that makes stones weep.
