Van Halen had Eddie and Alex Van Halen as the main founding members of the band. Eddie on guitar, Alex on drums. Had David Lee Roth from their club days to about mid 80s. Sammy Hagar joined for about a decade from mid 80s to mid or late 90s. On the last Van Halen album, Eddie's son joined as bass player, replacing long time bassist Michael Anthony.

Eddie Van Halen was the Jimi Hendrix of the 1980s (and late 1970s). He reinvented the concept of shred solos and popularised the Tapping technique, which is where you use your picking hand to press the hammer on the strings to make it ring without picking the string. He built his own guitar and it was a brand new sound to the world and everyone picked up on it.
Jimi Hendrix introduced new ways to shred and how to use distortion at its max.
Jimmy Page introduced unique chords, progressions, and techniques and mixed cultures with different tones and styles.
David Gilmour introduced new guitar effects and experimentation along with proving you don't need to play a thousand notes to deliver the same message.
Brian May introduced the concept of multilayered guitar harmonies and invented his own guitar with its own unique tones.
Ritchie Blackmore introduced classical elements to guitar solos while demonstrating how to break out in fast riffs.
Tony Iommi introduced the thickness of distorted and downtuned guitars that eventually gave birth to Heavy Metal.
Eddie Van Halen explored and popularised tapping and proved you could make almost any sound you want with the instrument.
Tom Morello explored the potential of guitar effects and the kill switch technique.
Jack White introduced clip gain distortion in the digital age.
Currently, the Internet has allowed for much more innovation, however, the traces end up becoming so blurred that we can't pin point which guitarists discovered any new techniques. But it's more than just how much you cam innovate new things, but how you can incorporate said innovations into your own music. All the guitarists above did exactly that.

That was an AMAZING SYNOPSIS on the world's GREATEST guitarists to date, and their contributions to the music we Love, remember, and listen to even to this day... Weeeeell fkn done!!! We cannot forget Stevie Ray Vaughn who blended Blues, rhythm, and solo guitaring with a bit of Country and heavy rock riffs during HIS unfortunately short time on Earth, before he was taken from us in a ("musically cliché") helicopter crash... But, EDDIE!?! MY "GUITAR GOD," CREATED AAAAALL the new guitarists we listen to in Rock today... And, the fact is that HE ACTUALLY STARTED ON DRUMS (and, his brother, Alex, actually started on guitar, but they switched instrumnets WHEN THEY WERE JUST YOUNG BOYS BORN AND LIVING IN HOLLAND before coming to America with their parents who were also musicians, well, their Dad was), and after Eddie took piano lessons, BUT EDDIE NEVER TOOK A GUITAR LESSON, just goes to show this GREAT Man's "god-like" musical prowess, ingenuity, and creativity... As well as the fact that TAKING LESSONS can sometimes keep you "IN THE BOX," as he had said in an interview on YT, WHERE EDDIE ALWAYS THOUGHT, CREATED, AND PLAYED "OUTSIDE THE BOX" JUST BECAUSE he never took a lesson... That ability to not be "grounded" by "normal" guitar-playing techniques and styles is what made him do the AMAZING things he did, musically, as well as to experiment, and "remake" numerous guitars, amplifiers, and "effects" that made his famous "Brown sound" as well as his style of playing, nearly impossible to duplicate, tho, many have tried... lol (Oh, and, btw, Eddie not only did the solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It" song, but he TOTALLY REARRANGED THE ENTIRE TRACK from what it was to what it IS TODAY, AND HE WANTED NO MONEY OR CREDIT ON THE ALBUM for it, THAT'S GREATNESS!!!) RIP EDDIE VAN HALEN😔 (You've been, and always will be, missed)... Thank you, sir... 🙏🏾😔🔥🎸😇

The album Fair Warning is said to be Van Halen's dark album. Highly underrated. Check out songs from the first two in 78 and 79, also the third release Women and Children First. But the pinnacle of Eddie's skills is in the concert Live Without A Net. The clip of his solo is said to be one of the greatest live guitar solos in rock music history.

David Lee Roth was the nephew of the infamous Manny Roth who ran the Cafe Wha? In Greenwich Villiage in the 60's. From a very young age, Dave saw some of the wildest beat poets, rappers, musicians, and intellectual weirdos.
Musically, what's going on raised the bar to heights that no one saw coming like Jackie Chan, but the lyrics are beat poet royalty. Only a guy like that could sketch a story like this.

Van Halen were the borderline of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. They would often go into both sides while staying loyal to everyone. They were such a widely beloved band that all the commercial fans loved the melodies and the singer, while all the harder and underground fans loved the heavy shredding guitars. They in a sense brought Heavy Metal to the states. They were responsible for the rise of Glam Metal and Pop Metal which largely kicked off in LA.
While the band and half of the members were from LA, the Van Halen brothers Alex and Eddie were from the Netherlands.

Van Halen was the ultimate 80's party band.

    • @kdm71291
      @kdm71291 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I just can't bring myself to think of VH as an "80s band"......since the first two albums came out before the 80s started and were immediately popular....and their sound and music is simply....."Van Halen"! They are their own genre. That being said, I have heard and agreed that their music could be called "California Party Rock".

    • @krkhns
      @krkhns 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@kdm71291 "California Party Rock". LOL. That's a new one for me and I grew up in the area during the period. It fits. The main reason they lump Van Halen into 80s metal is because Van Halen and Randy Rhoades are pretty much responsible for the bands that followed in the 80s. As teens in LA during the early-70s, going to extremely large (200+ people) backyard parties was the thing to do. And you could pretty much bet Van Halen would be playing at most of them. Except, they were called Mammoth back then. By the mid-70s, Van Halen and Quiet Riot (with Randy Rhoades) were the top local bands. And every other band was trying to imitate their sound. Once Van Halen released their debut album, every A&R man in the record business was trying to sign wannabe Van Halen bands. It got so bad, one of the main clubs the record people would hang out at went to pay-to-play (Gazzarri's). Rather than the band getting paid, the band paid Bill Gazzarri to play on his stage. Van Halen, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Guns 'n Roses, and Poison were all bands that paid to play there. If you played Gazzarri's, the chances were pretty good you'd get signed by a label. It was funny, when ever Bill Gazzarri would show up, he would be dressed like a 1940s mobster. They gave him the nickname "Godfather".

  • @cabansinleaf8867
    @cabansinleaf8867 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Eddie was all about the ' Sound '....the brown note!
He was forever in search of that elusive tone and just before he passed he admitted that he had finally been able to get that {or as close to it as possible} with his signature guitar and amps.
His guitar is unlike any other, like Hendrix, he literally crafted his work from scratch.
Van Halen are big as big can get, in terms of rock'n'roll sound signatures.

Guitarist Eddie Van Halen and his older brother drummer Alex Van Halen formed Van Halen.
And have been its only consistent members since their debut from 1978.
(And they started out playing each other's instruments.
Eddie was originally the drummer, and Alex was the guitarist.
But while Eddie was out throwing his paper route, Alex started playing Ed's drums.
And when Eddie heard Alex play his drums?
He realized Alex was the better drummer, so Eddie picked up the guitar.
    And the legend was born.)
Eddie was the first to play that finger tapping guitar thing.
    Well, on electric guitar.
Some other guitarists did finger tapping many many years earlier on acoustic guitar.
But Eddie was the first electric guitarist to do it.
His screaming dives you mentioned were not exactly unique to Eddie.
    Finger tapping was.
    He was the first.
And Ed's equally amazing on acoustic guitar, too, and does the finger tapping there, too.
Singer David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony rounded out the first few years.
Yes, I know almost every Van Halen song.
(Except for the songs on Van Halen 3.
    Not my favorite.)
And "California Girls" was David Lee Roth's first solo album.
His guitarist, Steve Vai, is still an Eddie Van Halen acolyte, all these years later.
Oddly enough, Alex and Eddie are Dutch.
    "Van" is Dutch.
(I'm 3/4 Dutch myself, even though I was born here.)
And they were born in Holland, and emigrated here.
Their father was a clarinetist, and played clarinet on one of their songs on Diver Down.
On their cover of "Big Bad Bill is Sweet William Now."
But the band got together in Los Angeles, California.
Started out playing all the clubs on the strip.
They have always had a badass groove.
(And yes, the Mama's & Papas did California Dreaming...but way back in the 1960s.
    Not the Beach Boys.
The giveaway is the female harmony vocals throughout the song.)
    Oh.
Back many years ago when Eddie and Valerie Bertinelli were still married?
She was trying to lose some weight, and her trainer said:
"You want to lose weight fast?
Dance to nothing but Van Halen songs.
Knock the weight right off you."
So she did, and it worked.
    True story.

Van Halen became huge right from the release of their debut album in 1978. They are from Los Angeles. They made 6 albums with singer David Lee Roth who then left the band in 1985. His first solo release was cover of California Girls. VH brought on board Sammy Hagar to become new singer. They made 4 albums with him up to 1995; all 4 albums went to number 1 on charts. Hagar left in 96. Gary Cherone was brought in as singer for 1 album and then Roth came back in 2006 and one final album was recorded. Sadly Eddie Van Halen passed away last October...a HUGE loss to VH fans...R.I.P. Eddie!

When Eddie came on the scene he raised the bar through the ceiling for all the other guitarists. They went home and tried to duplicate his sound but they couldn’t. It’s because Eddie was an innovator and he altered his pickups( through many a trial and error )to create the tones he wanted to hear. No one ever did that before! That’s what made him special besides being a great guitarist.

They were originally named The Broken Combs, then The Trojan Rubber Co., then Genesis, and then Mammoth. There was a band from San Francisco that had the same name so they had to change it again. They had just got Dave from the band Red Ball Jet and Michael Anthony from Snake when they formed Van Halen. I guess Mammoth was the best one to choose from or maybe that was the name Eddie really wish they could have kept🤷‍♂️

Eddie was really well known for tapping (guitar technique where you also play notes on the fretboard with your right hand as well as your left in essence as if you had super long alien fingers on your left hand) to the point where he’d turn his back to the audience so no one could see how he was doing it but alas he was like the Steph Curry of guitar but anyways other ppl had tapped before Spanish guys jazz guys on the acoustic but never like THAT before..

According to some stories I've read, EVH was usually very self conscious of his own guitar playing. He knew he was good, but he never felt like he was good enough to jam with other guitar players. Steve Lukather, another amazing guitarist, asked EVH to jam at a show, and he had a hard time convincing him to actually do it.

Van Halen is the ultimate garage band - just a bunch of guys you'd hire to play at your block parties and park events. David Lee Roth was on Joe Rogan a couple years back and was talking about Van Halen's early strategy when they played - traveling the different Southern California neighborhoods and playing different melodies to the different ethnic neighborhoods. The Hispanic neighborhoods who wanted quicker beats for their birthday parties like Carlos Santana would do, the surfer guys out on Venice Beach who wanted to hear faster guitars and lyrics like Aerosmith would do, and the working man from San Bernadino who wanted to hear ZZ Top and more bass rhythm. Dave even exampled that 'Dance the Night Away' and 'Jamie's Crying' had the Hispanic flavor because they had the Rumba and Cha-Cha beats to them. They just knew what all kinds of people wanted to hear versus playing what the band wanted to make and hoping an audience would find them.

This my first vid I saw from you guys, and I liked and subbed b/c of it. If you guys ever want someone who knows most everything about this band, I would be happy to comment or even join one of your casts.
The thing you guys might have missed is just how hard it is to play the intro you liked. I have known guitarists who have played a lifetime and cannot play that intro correct, one of the hardest 33 seconds of guitar you could ever ask anyone to master. There are maybe only 2 people in all of YT that actually come close, some kid named Tyler is probably the closest one of everybody. Even current professional guitarists cannot re-create that intro verbatim.
You are correct in that Van Halen started in 1978 but peaked in the 1980's, before the lead singer change. What you might not know is just the sheer number of people who started to play guitar b/c of hearing those Roth-Era Van Halen songs. This number would easily be in the millions, and not just the US, worldwide.
While the Van Halen songs are great on their own, what Eddie did outside of the recording to further the guitar as an instrument is a whole other discussion. If Eddie never recorded a song, he would still be famous for what he pioneered in guitar design and also amplification design. In 2021, to this day, the designs of the guitars and amps he created, in collaboration with others, are still some of the best selling products today. His Peavey amplifier (the 5150, now 6505) models are the best selling Peavey models. His signature guitars sold by EVH (aka Fender), Charvel EVH models, Music Man models, and Kramer EVH models go for crazy amounts on eBay and are still being produced and sold in 2021. He was a key contributor to the Floyd Rose whammy bar on most guitars today, while he did not invent the component, he was one of the early testers of this piece of equipment and was the person who added the fine tuners to the design. This is just touching on the surface of the number of things he designed or developer during his prime in the 80's and 90's.
As for song writing, the basic Van Halen formula would be Eddie coming up with the guitar part first, then his bro on drums would add the rhythm, then Eddie would usually add the bass, and at the end they would bring in Roth for vocals. Eddie was the key to most of their songs, with Roth adding a few tracks, but I would estimate Eddie wrote 80-90% of their originals.
Hope this adds some light to the subject, I can say I played piano until I heard the Van Halen albums, then I switched to guitar because it had that much of an impact on my ears.
    David

For pattern recognition, look at Ted Templeton. In 1973 he produced "Montrose" (named after guitarist Ronnie Montrose) and in 1978 he produced "Van Halen" (named after guitarist Eddie Van Halen). The rest is evolution.
