The Cold Steel Code 4 is dependable and tough, yet thin, light and highly functional for everyday carry. It has a sturdy, hard-anodized gun metal grey 6061 aluminum handle with Cold Steel's solid Tri-Ad lock. The high satin polished, razor sharp Japanese AUS8A spear point blade has an ambidextrous thumb stud to go along with the reversible tip-up carry pocket clip.
I asked my mother for this for Xmas, and she did not disappoint (thanks Mom!). She ordered it on 12/14/2014, and it arrived shortly thereafter. She paid $65.94 after shipping, which is a damn good deal!
I got the 58TPS model (Spear-Point Non-Serrated). At first, I was afraid I would have to send it back, because it was so stiff and difficult to open and close. But I thought "no, I'll work on it". Six days later, it works like a charm, and it's smooth and easy to open and close. Just a very slight grittiness on the opening, but it's smoothing out the more I open it.
I freaking LOVE this knife! I already cut the back of my right index finger while trying to close this one-handed by using gravity to close the blade. Lesson learned: this is a two-handed knife.
I was slightly afraid that I would want a bigger blade when I got this, but I quickly learned that a 3.5" blade is just about perfect for any task I'll likely use in my EDC. And this will certainly replace my CRKT Mah Eraser as my EDC knife.
Cold Steel knew what they were doing when they made this knife. And Blade HQ Overviews did a great job with this video. I checked out this video before I made my decision, and I'm glad I did. And I'm even more pleased with my experience with Blade HQ after ordering this knife. Thanks guys! You have a now and future customer.
Yes and thank you for your concern. All phalanges are present and accounted for as of June 21, 2013. We'll have regular phalangial attachment updates every weekday. Stay tuned.
Will do! The field test on this video is unlike anything I've done before. It's going to be intense to edit, but hopefully epic in the way it turns out.
Nice! That's a great purchase for sure. Thanks for shopping with us!
code4 is thinner, lighter, has Aluminum scales, recon has thick g10 with aggressive traction, recon has Tuff-ex coating on the blade, Recon1 is the tactical folder, the code4 is the gent's folder version if you like :)
Really nice video! Code 4 looks like an elegant version of Recon 1 :D.
Definitely the most beautiful Cold Steel IMO! BTW I just picked up a ZT 0550 from you guys a few weeks ago, and I love it!
It's not a bad folder at all, I tried it and didn't like how slick it was. It's personal preference. I gave the code 4 tanto to my dad cause he liked it a lot. I prefer recon 1.
Yeah this is the 3.5" recon... Pretty much the same blade, except the handles. Im also glad they made an xl version! Ive been asking for that one!!
Great vid Ben, hearing lots of good things about the CS Code4, also hearing its like CS version of the kershaw Cryo (except lighter, bigger etc..basically what the Cryo shd have been) I do like it alot and look forward to the testing vid (they are always good value vids). You do a great job with these overview's ben, all info required without all the BS! keep up the quality work mate, best wishes and take care
dude, your prices ROCK!
i'm a huge sucker for the voyager series, the recon 1 series i didn't get because of the unfortunate blade geometry - i think full flat is superior than a mid-high hollow...
the code 4 blades are beautiful, the drop point looks awesome and the thickness is amazing for carry. but again - the grind doesn't sell me on those - and for "just fondling" they are too pricey for aus8 steel.
great video ben!
This video says the blade material is AUS-8. The listing on Blade HQ where this video appeared says it's CPM-S35VN.
I have one. It is very cool. Im glad Cool steel is stepping up there looks.
Love this, always loved their knives but hated the handles, this is great.
I bought for EDC I had a recon 1 tanto partially serated so this should be my go to knife.
Very cool design. Thin an light is good.
I think for normal EDC I'd prefer the axis lock for ease of one hand opening/closing. For survival, the tri-ad's (somewhat) superior strength kinda gives the assurance you'd want in the woods.
I agree. AUS8A is a good performance steel but there are better option out there. Blade steel is almost always the Achilles' heel in CS folders, something CS detractors is too keen to pounce on.
I have nothing to say except for a hearty, "You're welcome!"
Can't wait to get one of these. To replace the RAT1 I lost.
Questions like these start riots. :) I haven't seen laboratory stress tests on both of them, but I've handled both and seen both batoned and beaten. The axis lock is super solid, but I'd be willing to bet the triad lock is stronger... just my opinion.
love this knife, great video. Its a little over priced at $77 but personally i like the experience i get from Blade HQ, always have so i dont mind spending 15-20 more
Well said, though neither lock is weak enough that it would break under the strain you'd put a survival folder through.
Mine is made with cths-xhp steel. And i have the tanto straight edge
wow the more I look the nicer that blade seems. maybe ill get one
I never liked the look of Cold Steel knives personally but I really like this blade design and the price seems good.
I have few blades to buy first but ill definitely be picking one up in the coming weeks.
Great as usual BladeHQ!
i have had the American lawman for a bit under a decade. i am very abusive with my edc. (breaking up rocks, chopping down trees etc.) that triad lock has never failed, and is just as strong as day 1. it holds as strong as a fixed blade of similar quality. i have had 3 USCM K-bars in my lifetime break before this. (usually form heavy abuse) I have never had a knife survive for so long.
Axis lock locks with a small steel bar through a steel frame with two cut outs where that bar sits in. If great stress is applied to the blade's back, those two cut outs will wear out (also the steel bar) and the look produces vertical play.
Haven't seen that with the Tri-Ad lock. So my opinion is Tri-Ad lock is more wear resistent, but stronger? No clue.
Love the thinness, but I do wish they had a different steel. Might pick it up anyway though lol
It's a good one to start on.
so what is the difference between the Code 4 and the Recon 1 besides looks?
I have both the Recon 1 and the large voyager. How do you think this one stacks up against them?
July 24th, 2013: fingers: 10 toes: 10 All safe and accounted for at this time. :)
Yeah I agree, spendy for aus8
Thanks Mr. Nutnfancy.
I would buy it but you don't ship to the uk
Yes.
Is the tri-ad lock stronger than an axis lock?
Are you making a field test video for the code 4?
Is there a reason to get a 6061 alloy in this age of super hard 7000
I kinda like this one!
Hey Ben, be sure to do a finger/toe update from time to time to keep us current on your digit count! Lol
Could you do a size comparison with a Recon 1?
I say the triad, i know you might not care but the deltas on the axis and break. just my two cents
Why would Cold Steel use a single sided thumb stud? Why not a double sided thumb stud?
Mr Shane what I only one, oh yeah never mind.
Do you still have 10 fingers and 10 toes on June 20, 2013?
Looks a lot like a aluminum handled recon to me. I love it. Send me one. Lol
I wish it was flat grind
Was thinking the same thing!)
looks like its basicly a recon 1 with less tacticool looks?!
why do people not like the serrated code 4?
Yusuke Kimura because the cold steel serations suck
Plain edges are preferred the most because ease of sharpening.
if cold steel likes aus 8 so much why don't they spring for zdp189
looks a lot like a recon 1 (2010) just with a polish blade and no g-10
The only thing missing now is a glass breaker...
nutnfancy would love this
2:19 That's what she said.
jk. Great review, but why doesn't anybody get/show this knife in clip point? Seriously.
cold steels tri-ad lock is the strongest in the world, police aint got squat on it.
Lockbacks that are hard to depress really are not fun to use.
no zdp189 is way better than aus 8 just like it on a coldsteel
Ara eti danaka vor cuc es talis
Says XHP not AUS 8 =P
Yeah Cold Steel upgraded a couple of AUS8 blades to CTS XHP
Too flat, too many tactical points
Don't be scared...flip that thing out.
CS has the worst looking packaging. $80 knife in a box that looks like something you'd pick up at the dollar store.
Can get better steel at Walmart.
cool knife, ugly clip.
Okay, it is great that we dont live in the 70s and or you dont were skinny jeans. I can never watch led zep or any other 70s rock vids or concerts. It is just pure 100% horrible bulge. Did I just say that. Oh well thanks for not showing man bulge.
