It was a deliberate thought through action. It would have been obvious to anyone of decency that actions such as his, was insulting to everyone who has ever served. What elderly veterans? There are only a small handful (literally around 0.5%) of WW2 veterans and any adult of that generation still alive and they're dying out rapidly. Most of them have been dead for the last two decades.
I don't think some people grasp how long ago 80 years ago was. For a frame of reference, look at Joe Biden. He was born in 1942 and was a wee toddler when WW2 ended. He's a geriatric in his 80s who barely has any marbles left.
