Here's my actual """"problems"""" with Refantazio - The other candidates felt underutulized. Cararina was cool, but I barely got to meet or care about Loveless, the beauty guy, the military guy, heck, they gave a special portrait to the brown-furred eugief girl and she existed basically just for one scene! They're present but they basically offer little to nothing of interest aside from Gallica's comments on their posters. I think they'd benefit from having one sidequest each focused on their development, or having them be surprise bosses you could meet while doing dungeoncrawling. I know there are quests they give in the endgame but at that point they're already basically dropouts and I care more about challenging Louis. - I wish there was a boon I could get to make planting a seed in the Gauntlet Runner not take a whole damn timeslot. IT'S LITERALLY JUST PLANTING A SEED! - The item menus can get kinda messy. The in-battle one is good, but I wish the elemental items and stat/status items were separated. The normal item menu clutters all the expendable items and makes sorting it out a bit of a chore. - The default stat-less equipment makes the equip menu always feel a bit cluttered too, and it's not necessary. - When I wanted to boost certain stats like Eloquence or Tolerance, I always felt more limited than when boosting Courage. The colliseum, sparring with party members during gauntlet runs... I know I can do debates and bookreading, but I wish there were more options there. - The way the skill swap menus are set up is uncomfortable. When I press L1 and R1 I switch between the chosen character's archetypes, but I never found a reason to do so. I always wanted to switch between the CHARACTERS and their equipped Archetypes. - I wish there was a way I could engage the chest mimics with advantage when I KNOW that they're mimics. I can't attack them or nothing. I wish they just jumped at you and attacked as soon as you got close, so if you were ready, you could dodge in time and attack them. - The weather system feels undercooked, I can only see the current weather from the Gauntlet Runner map but to predict the weather I need to run back to the city to get the weather girl's opinion. Even then, all that the weather boils down to is removing the press turn gains while boosting EXP gain, and while it's a good risk-reward idea, in practice it just flattens my strategic options.
Not gonna lie I'm super salty that SMTV:Vengeance didn't get a single nomination but especially not anything for its music when it has by far the best OST in SMT/Persona history. Also the fact SMTVV uses a different version of the original battle theme for the Canon of Vengeance storyline is just so good Kozuka absolutely cooked with that soundtrack.
12:32 To be fair, that game's OST is carried by a 20 year legacy to take inspiration from. It also had zero issues reusing the airbuster theme multiple times in the arena simulations. Infinite Wealth/FFXVI are much better examples since those games are, you know, NEW.
I dunno, if "X year legacy to take inspiration from" is a problem, a lot of songs from Infinite Wealth and FFXVI are callbacks or building upon songs that came from before it. Like a Dragon has a lot of base music they've been using for a while like the iterations on the "Receive & X" line (along with tons of other assets), and XVI takes a lot of cues from Soken's prior work on XIV, particularly the Eikon music or anything from the Omega DLC (to say nothing of how iterative the game's lore is, since it didn't really include any new summons/Eikons, which would have been neat). I agree it's not fair to compare to VII Remake since a lot of songs are remixes or rearrangements, but for an actually fair comparison you'd really want to be comparing it to the first outing of a brand new IP like Fantasian, or at least from a game that wildly changes styles with each iteration (comparing one of the initial Persona 3/4/5 releases, maybe?) Since I think P5 (pre-Royal) had... what, 1 regular battle theme, 1 ambush battle theme, Blooming Villain for all regular boss fights, and then Rivers in the Desert with and w/o lyrics, and then the final boss theme? So 5/6 themes, plus the times when the background music overrides the battle theme if you want to count that. I think there might have been a different theme for like, a couple of more event-based battles, but it's been a hot minute and I don't know those nearly as well.
Hey did u hear Clive Rosfield from the hit video game Final Fantasy XVI is the final DLC character as a guest for Beat Fighting Game 2024 winner Tekken 8? I hear some Aussie dude screamed so hard about it that it shaked TH-cam (the website where videos are posted) and since you are from Australia maybe you heard it from your basement
I actually agree with your take with the soundtrack. The songs are good and all, but when I have been playing only Warriors of Valour over and over, I knew it was not a memorable soundtrack. And yes, Strohl was always in my party. 😎
You don’t like “Warrior’s in Arms” or “Prelude to a Heroic Tale” or “You Face Louis Guiabern” or “Formidable Foe” or “Rival Candidate” or “Akademia”? It’ll grow on you, give it time.
I like how in P5R, any outfit you can equip will play their own theme across the whole series So we’re not stuck with only Take Over and and Last Surprise
I been thinking the same thing ngl, it was disappointing to hear the same theme play for regular dungeon bosses and story bosses. Especially when I would say that I am a player that lives for those hype ass moments alongside hype ass music. A recent example being Clive accepting the truth and find the flame starts playing, absolute cinema
Thank you so much for this! I just finished the game and was incredibly underwhelmed by the ost. Because of how repetitive the tracks had been, I was starting to get exhausted by it. Having the normal boss theme be the theme for Archetype Louis was absolutely foul and made me mentally check out for the rest of the game
I would excuse the lack of variation in the soundtrack if Shoji Meguro could actually arrange for orchestra instead of the flat sound we got in Metaphor
8:43 personally I like how the human theme plays then, adds some narrative to the fight. Also helps that it’s piss easy and I did it in like 2 turns so at least I got to the better fights faster
One problem i had with metaphor story was thats junahs awakening was bad. Everyone elses felt like there was some kind of motivation but Junah was like yo lets do this.
Your statement at the start is so true. I played persona 3 reload and then after that i played metaphor and its like night and day. I dont think i could go back to persona 3 after playing this. Persona 6 is gonna have to be peak
I dont think its really an issue but if they do expand on the game i would love : - more human designs - more super bosses - more battle themes (even if it didnt bother me that much) - additional party members like Katherina or Batlin - playable party members in the dungeons - tweaking the NG+ in order to be less restrictive
Gonna be honest, I was about to be one of those comments about the soundtrack, but you bring up some really good points and made me realize I also have some issues with the ost. The fact that, when I was considering buying the Metaphor soundtrack, I didn't get why there were 6 discs bc I thought it had maybe 25 songs at most. I still routinely listen to the soundtrack just because the vibes are good, but after you played that SMT (I think?) song during the super boss battle, I'm now convinced that they definitely could have done more. I know there's word that Atlus is done with enhanced versions, but I would genuinely love an enhanced version of Metaphor that adds more songs.
No ground breaking new ways to strategize in metaphor. Oh so I guess me spamming divine light with Eupha & a charged energy ray with Will, whilst using my other 2 party members to distract the enemy and keep Will alive since energy ray costs hp, was a figment of my imagination. 😂😂 Metaphor gave me some of the most high risk high reward strategies that I could ask for. It’s arguably more fun if you dont break the game with Royal archetypes. But even if you dont use them you have a lot of creative ways to build. Sure I could hassou tobi everything to death. Or I could walk the tight rope of stay alove while spamming HP physical attacks against an 11 press turn Louis….
It’s the Elden Ring issues all over again. Where people using the meteor spell were saying the game was piss easy but then others were complaining that the game was too hard.
This is the type of thing that could be rectified in a rerelease, though Atlus (THANKFULLY) said they aren’t doing that I feel dlcs tend to not make big changes to the base game in the same way rereleases do, but if Atlus does do a major piece of dlc content for Metaphor I’d really like them to be willing to fix this
The only big problem for me was how nobody told me i had to get certain classes for certain people fully upgraded to get the best archetypes, which had me grind the final room in the final dungeon for 4 hours. Really anti climactic lol.
Yea, it was my biggest problem too. The monotone poetry slam is cool as hell, but as a motif. Hearing the same chant over and over kinda dulls its novelty, cause its novelty is drained like 1/4th of the way thru the game. The songs were to modest to be repeated that much, i didnt mind P3R's repetitive battle themes cause they were genuinely beautiful and complex, 109hr first run and i still cant stop listening to the battle themes about a year from release. Same with P5 (havent played R yet), but the battle themes in Metaphor felt like 2 of a whole set playing off that motif like FF7 remake games. Those games have a billion iterations on the basic battle theme. Compared to everything else about the game, the music felt the most rushed.
I actually totally agree with you here; I wish that Metaphor had done more with the boss themes at the very minimum. I think that some of the story dungeon themes are some of the best I've heard in any game -- though, not necessarily on the merit of composition alone but more the overall vibe enhancement a lot of them bring. Castle of Dread is one of my absolute favorite songs in the entire game -- the driving, marching percussion, the emotional voice doing this... vocal thing I'm sure has a name where it sounds like her voice is wavering/breaking, the general instrumentation is just really nice! But then you get to the baby human fight, and like, it's this super emotional scene that really has some actual gut punches, and firstly... they music leading up to that in the cutscene just isn't fitting, and secondly, the normal Human theme gets old. Quick. I think it works for the first big human fight, but only up until the Awakening scene. But to reuse it... over and over and over and over again for every Human fight... At the very least I would've liked the boss themes to tie into the area you fight them in better. Maybe Gallica ran outta songs smh...
After finishing Metaphor it felt like the most 9/10 game Atlus could make. It's almost as if they are gonna release a "Royal" edition that addresses every minor issue the base game has. P5 was my first Atlus game and I thought it was perfect until I played P5R. It really felt like they were holding back on this game's full potential, which is crazy considering how good the game is already. They could definitely refine the pacing and late game content, improve the action combat, and add more soundtracks.
This was the first time I played a game they made and could see parts they were holding back on. It was pretty glaring and a bit disappointing but business is business I guess.
Honestly, it's true. I was so hyped to get to the final boss and then... it didn't sound that different to the rest of the game. Like, I still enjoyed it, I just wish it went all out
Some people just want SMTV:Vengeance type variation in their OSTs but that’s just unrealistic. This OST is expansive compared to the Strange Journey OST yet here we are. People will learn
Exactly lol People are just spoiled. Listened to the OST a few days ago. It's incredible and I had no complaints with it. If the tracks were bad I would get it but come on.
My only problem with this game is that I did not have a spare day to challenge the Elegy of The Soul. Other than that, my favorite game I played this year.
FINALLY I felt like I was the only person in earth with that opinion. The amount of times I was getting hyped up by a custcene introducing some big fucked up monster or other intimidating threat, anticipating for the game to FINALLY pull out some crazy new boss theme, only to be put flat on my ass by the regular boss theme that plays in the first hour of the game is INSANE. Spoilers: I almost pissed myself laughing when not only did the final dungeon have the regular title theme (not even an arrangement, like, that would have been cool, but JUST THE REGULAR TITLE THEME) as its music but also, like you mentioned, the first phase against Louis (who already got the one unique boss theme until that point in the game earlier btw) pulled out the regular human boss theme which is an incredibly unfitting track that doesn't even begin to do justice to the amazing design of the human enemies.
boring battle themes is one thing.... Selling better battle themes is as dlc is just frustrating.. I got so tired of the common battle theme I bought the PES3 theme..
I agree that you could add one more battle theme here: a default battle theme for when you're in disadvantage. It'd be good to differenciate when you choose to start a Squad battle without advantage or when you get jumped by the enemies. But tbh this is a clickbait title and there are bigger flaws you could talk about with Metaphor, though those are only gonna get analyzed in like, a year or so after the honeymoon phase for everyone
4:14 While there is some merit to this, the problem is a bit more nuanced. TLDR: Persona protags are WAY to versatile, so they need to find a way to balance strategies. Nahobino is way too broken, so again, balance. Will isn't OP until the last stretch, so losing him isn't as impactful for a battle.(there's also some stoy implication but this is mostly gameplay) In Persona 3 4 and 5 you are a wild card meaning you can change affinties and stats on the fly while having 3 different moves/passives all at once, Joker, yu and makoto can fill any role, tank, support, healer buffer, dps. They are way too versatile, essentially making the core of the team... Nahobino meanwhile is mostly the same but can permanently change his affinties without using passives and use pretty much all skills in the game while having some very powerful unique skills of his own. I'm sorry but if Nahobino dies while having demi-fiends affinties(all null btw) then you deserve to lose(unless it's a really stupid super boss or something) Will(canon name for metaphors protag) isn't unique. He doesn't have the same luxury of being extremely versatile since everyone has access to every archetype outside of the royals. The only point in which having a game lose when will dies is after he gets his royal archetype which is basically the most OP especially for that stage of the game, but thats so late in the game that it'd be very bullshit...
Honestly I think the music was fine enough to not get jarring by the time I beat the game, but I also felt that it mattered more in game feel because you’d get the hype song when you staggered something sure, but when you got ambushed the music fed into that sense of danger/frustration at getting hit in the first place. But I can definitely see the other side of it. Taste in music just be subjective like that tho
I do agree that after a good bit the lack of variety in music but at least the music is good overall. Now this reminded me of Dragon Quest 11 which has the same issue with repetitive music but the to me it was not good.
So real, I can never play Persona after this lmao... Having a setting somewhere other than a highschool for the trillionth time gave them so much more creative freedom to make all kinds of cool bossfights and cut scenes. The game is by no means perfect, but it does feel like a true rpg and a damn fun one at that, I 100% my hard playthrough after 100h and I can confidently say that this is is better than P3R, P4G, and P5R
6:26 before you talk let me say, I love the soundtrack, for me is one of the best. BUT! orchestra and hymns are not for everybody, so I would say that the music in methafor is more niche than most other atlus games. 8:35 COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU, I never though about it perse, but I did kind of fot tired of the generic boss theme. I stand for the fact that the dragons each should have had their own themes specially the scire of apocalypse, and the book of apocalypse. 10:02 you reqd my mind
To be honest I don’t care that verge of life and death is used for half the songs. It’s my favorite song in the game so I actually want it to be 75% lol
Fair, but the near life or death boss track is so legit I can't complain about at all. The monk gets a bit annoying sometimes and I wasn't a huge fan of the island soundtracks
For me didn’t have issues with battle osts since I like and very enjoyable for me but only 9 for battles kinda to small so maybe do release or dlc hope we get more battles osts
dude THANK YOU for saying it. I was so pissed that the superboss theme was the same. Also another complain that I have that i feel nobody else has said: The dungeons are straight up ASS. Most of the time I just look at the minimap and occasionally look at the screen whenever there’s a red dot on the minimap
Interesting critique about the ost. I honestly think I put that complaint to the back of my head and ignored it. It did get a tiny bit annoyed tho. I honestly had a similar complaint with kh3. There were so many new and different songs from kh2 compared to kh1. Kh3 did have new songs however there were a solid amount of songs from kh2 that were used or remixed in a way. Like bro why are we still using rowdy rumble?????

There is no inevitable rerelease for this one unfortunately (in this one case where things people whinge about can be fixed. But people get what they ask for)

Finally! Someone points out the Tradia Desert issue!
Here's my actual """"problems"""" with Refantazio
- The other candidates felt underutulized.
Great video Metaphor ReFantazio is peak
“Piss weak” made me chuckle.
I agree it's not fair to compare to VII Remake since a lot of songs are remixes or rearrangements, but for an actually fair comparison you'd really want to be comparing it to the first outing of a brand new IP like Fantasian, or at least from a game that wildly changes styles with each iteration (comparing one of the initial Persona 3/4/5 releases, maybe?)
Since I think P5 (pre-Royal) had... what, 1 regular battle theme, 1 ambush battle theme, Blooming Villain for all regular boss fights, and then Rivers in the Desert with and w/o lyrics, and then the final boss theme?
Would you believe it I JUST beat the game, literally moments ago, and I open youtube to see that you uploaded a metaphor video lol. Fantasy is real
Hard agree on this one. I love this soundtrack to death but god I just wish there was more of it.
Hold up - the Protagonist actually speaks in this game? Like in dialogue and not just in-battle or other miscellaneous voice lines??
Yes
Yep
He does but his dialogue is still extremely limited and for the most part only speaks when a dialogue option comes up
I see Strohl I click. I still feel funny tingles whenever he says, "Oh holy light!" 🥵
I like how in P5R, any outfit you can equip will play their own theme across the whole series
So we’re not stuck with only Take Over and and Last Surprise
Tbh the boss ost was so good I didn't mind it being used so much
The Clive on Tekken ending saved the vídeo 😌
The biggest problem for me is that I never heard of this game prior to release on steam so I couldn't save up money for it. Me love being poor
There’s a crack despite the game having denuvo, go for it
I dont think its really an issue but if they do expand on the game i would love :
- more human designs
- more super bosses
- more battle themes (even if it didnt bother me that much)
- additional party members like Katherina or Batlin
- playable party members in the dungeons
- tweaking the NG+ in order to be less restrictive
This video contains Strohl
Okay that Forza Finale drop was peak.
No ground breaking new ways to strategize in metaphor.
Oh so I guess me spamming divine light with Eupha & a charged energy ray with Will, whilst using my other 2 party members to distract the enemy and keep Will alive since energy ray costs hp, was a figment of my imagination. 😂😂
Metaphor gave me some of the most high risk high reward strategies that I could ask for.
I'm starting to think my yakuzatuber likes ff16 idk why, is he billingual???!?!!?
12:35 Best critism on FF7R ever.
This is the type of thing that could be rectified in a rerelease, though Atlus (THANKFULLY) said they aren’t doing that
I feel dlcs tend to not make big changes to the base game in the same way rereleases do, but if Atlus does do a major piece of dlc content for Metaphor I’d really like them to be willing to fix this
The only big problem for me was how nobody told me i had to get certain classes for certain people fully upgraded to get the best archetypes, which had me grind the final room in the final dungeon for 4 hours.
Forza Finale during the super boss made me lock in.
Like, I still enjoyed it, I just wish it went all out
Damn... a suprise but a welome one. Warrior in valor is stull based as fuck.
SMT V:V has a crazy amount of battle tracks! Always bumpin in my seat, when I get in a new fight
Bait used to be belieavable man
Some people just want SMTV:Vengeance type variation in their OSTs but that’s just unrealistic. This OST is expansive compared to the Strange Journey OST yet here we are. People will learn
Exactly lol People are just spoiled. Listened to the OST a few days ago. It's incredible and I had no complaints with it. If the tracks were bad I would get it but come on.
tbh i didnt think about the lack of battlethemes much but you have a good point.
especially final boss phase 1 being generic is stoopid.
4:45 hol up did you seriously never use the accessory that lowers the cost of all synthesis skills by 1?
Strohl is great)
Regarding music... Knowing Atlus it is ok to expect them releasing enchansed metaphor edition... Maybe then some music Will be added?
My only problem with this game is that I did not have a spare day to challenge the Elegy of The Soul. Other than that, my favorite game I played this year.
Metaphor needs more music but the main battle theme is such a vibe though.
Rival candidates straight up sucks, it gets repetitive fast
Also fuck Altabury day/night theme
Makes sense. Strohl is quite literally the goat 🐐
Spoilers:
I almost pissed myself laughing when not only did the final dungeon have the regular title theme (not even an arrangement, like, that would have been cool, but JUST THE REGULAR TITLE THEME) as its music but also, like you mentioned, the first phase against Louis (who already got the one unique boss theme until that point in the game earlier btw) pulled out the regular human boss theme which is an incredibly unfitting track that doesn't even begin to do justice to the amazing design of the human enemies.
boring battle themes is one thing....
Were you interested in any revealed game in TGA yesterday ? Can we expect a 56 minute video of you breaking down the ~1 min Project Century trailer ?
4:14 While there is some merit to this, the problem is a bit more nuanced.
TLDR: Persona protags are WAY to versatile, so they need to find a way to balance strategies. Nahobino is way too broken, so again, balance. Will isn't OP until the last stretch, so losing him isn't as impactful for a battle.(there's also some stoy implication but this is mostly gameplay)
In Persona 3 4 and 5 you are a wild card meaning you can change affinties and stats on the fly while having 3 different moves/passives all at once, Joker, yu and makoto can fill any role, tank, support, healer buffer, dps. They are way too versatile, essentially making the core of the team...
Nahobino meanwhile is mostly the same but can permanently change his affinties without using passives and use pretty much all skills in the game while having some very powerful unique skills of his own. I'm sorry but if Nahobino dies while having demi-fiends affinties(all null btw) then you deserve to lose(unless it's a really stupid super boss or something)
Will(canon name for metaphors protag) isn't unique. He doesn't have the same luxury of being extremely versatile since everyone has access to every archetype outside of the royals. The only point in which having a game lose when will dies is after he gets his royal archetype which is basically the most OP especially for that stage of the game, but thats so late in the game that it'd be very bullshit...
I love Metaphor to bit but no specific boss theme really sucks. Nice video!
Honestly kingdom hearts having unique battle and field themes for every world is the greatest thing ever and every other RPG needs to do the same.
6:00
I killed the human kraken boss
IN ONE TURN ONLY WITH STROHL
Literally 2 cuts and rip now you are Takoyaki
Honestly I think the music was fine enough to not get jarring by the time I beat the game, but I also felt that it mattered more in game feel because you’d get the hype song when you staggered something sure, but when you got ambushed the music fed into that sense of danger/frustration at getting hit in the first place. But I can definitely see the other side of it. Taste in music just be subjective like that tho
what are you feeding your strohl, he misses half his attacks unless i make him a brawler
I do agree that after a good bit the lack of variety in music but at least the music is good overall. Now this reminded me of Dragon Quest 11 which has the same issue with repetitive music but the to me it was not good.
The superbosses died for me in like 2 turns on hard, while I would have liked a new track the standard theme is fitting for getting Slashed to bits
Forza Finale goes SO FUCKING HARD
The full title of Persona 3 is ペルソナ3. Persona 3. That's it.
A marketing choice by the localization team does not change that.
Snowie we need your opinion on project century and virtua fighter
Two thumbs up!!
he speaking on real world issues and yall gotta give him credit for it
dude THANK YOU for saying it. I was so pissed that the superboss theme was the same.
Also another complain that I have that i feel nobody else has said:
The dungeons are straight up ASS. Most of the time I just look at the minimap and occasionally look at the screen whenever there’s a red dot on the minimap
Based video totally agree
I think BG3 had a simliar problem awesome soundtrack but there wasnt that many song for an 80 hour game
I agree with every statement. Great video!
0:13 uh no?
you need to find a way to advertise ffxvi in every video from now on we're in too deep now
Interesting critique about the ost.
Ok you convinced me, ill play infinite weath instead
He only liked Strohl because he was voiced by FF16 voice actor
Never really payed attention to the music lol but i can understand why people are frustrated about it
Attempt 2 for a video idea suggestion (pls make this happen): ranking all the tiger drops in yakuza games (including og ps2 and spinoffs/variants like in Y5).
Recently saw a video showcasing all the tiger drops and the dmg varies a lot. That made me think abt a ranking video for the best one of them all
Maybe the inevitable re-release will add more battle themes
There is no inevitable rerelease for this one unfortunately (in this one case where things people whinge about can be fixed. But people get what they ask for)
Agreed completely. The soundtrack gave me a lot of KH vibes and they were all subpar. Smt v has the best soundtrack of any video game ive ever played.
Seriously in love with
Have you ever played SJ? And if so what did you think of its OST
I have played it (OG as well on Hard, and a guide) and it is peak. That’s why this “issue” didn’t bother me that much.
For me its the dungeon, most of them were just copy and paste to one another especially outside the main dungeon, even then the main dungeon still falls short, especially after persona 5
