Great video... At age 50 I am new to the coin collecting world, and your videos have been so helpful to me. I did buy a cheap scope on ebay, and would love a recommendation for a scope that is good, but not too expensive. I am doing all of this for my 7yr old son, he has a natural love for coins, and has for a few yrs now, and it's really strange, but I encourage it... He runs to the mail box every day to see if he has any new coins... So thank you again for helping out an old timer..

I’ve been collecting coins for close to 5 yrs now. I’m 58 yrs young, lol. As I’m learning, what I have realized. Not too long ago is that there’s a lot to learn and know in this hobby of coin collecting. At one point I remember thinking that I just about to a point of remembering all the dates and errors and so on. I started with pennys. I’ve put countless hours into this and I’ve realized that there’s so much more to it. But it’s coming together and everything is making sense. I remember when I was a small bit just being fascinated with the copper penny. Anyways, you have turned out to be one that I’m get information from more and more. Your very knowledgeable in what you do and I understand what your doing and I just have to say thank you and your a good man. To take the time away from your very busy days to put together a video for us is just very Admirable. Thank you and your staff for all that you guys and gals do. It’s helping not only me but many people at there, to be able to enjoy a hobbie and at the same time, put a couple pennys in are pockets.

I just started with coins but let me say I do not think I have enough years left to learn everything about them. The doubled dies get me everytime. This video has helped a lot thanks. I get so embarrassed when I turn a coin into coin community and they always tell me no its not. I want to crawl into a hole even though they cant see me. Maybe next time they will tell me yes after seeing this video. ,But I do agree there is so much to learnBut I love it and not planning on giving up any time soon.

I have learned so much from your videos. I am relatively new to coin collecting and one of my biggest challenges has been the Doubled Die coin. When I first started collecting every other coin looked like a Doubled Die coin to me. LOL LOL. Finally, you have cleared this up for me. You are a great teacher and I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with everyone. I have wasted entirely too much time trying to decide if my coin was a Doubled Die or not. Thank you so much!! Have a blessed day.

    Daniel,
What an educational video about double dies. As a new coin collector this was an amazing video.
One thing I've noticed with all your videos, it's always about making sure new collectors don't waste there money buy having the wrong coins sent out for grading.
It probably has something to do with making sure new bees don't ruin coin collecting for seasoned veterans.
    Thank you again,
    Brian

Reduction: that is what helped me understand the difference between machine doubling and doubled dies. I first caught the concept on a BlueRidge SilverHound video, but your video really sent the idea home.
I've been so frustrated by being constantly told that coins I thought were DD were machine doubling...I actually quit the hobby for over a year. My learning plateaued and I walked away for a while.

Thank you for this video! I've been a coin hunter for a bit over 30 years now, and my son is now starting to collect which is making me fall in love with US coins all over again and since the creation of the internet, I never actually took the time to see what created the double die coins and that the punching dies were actually errored to begin with, so incredibly interesting to know the difference now. I've never had an issue with identifying true double die errors with die wear because of the thickness and notches (that's how I identified them) but man this vid was great! Thank you again! Will watch your other videos

Thank you so, so, much!!! I had a big misunderstanding about how actual doubled dies occur and why there can be more than one coin with the same doubled die features. The fact that you pointed out that the "die", itself, is "doubled" explained everything for me and how more than one coin can have the same doubled die feature(s). I had always envisioned the doubling occurred as a result of striking the coin twice.
You seemed hesitant, at times, in your video as if you weren't getting your point across or that you weren't providing enough info. Well, rest easy. It was an excellent presentation. Even your pencil drawings were an important part to my understanding the difference between strike doubled and doubled die coins.

So….the coin is not struck twice, it’s the die itself that has the double on it. It then strikes the planchet once, but since the die has doubling on it, it has now created a “double die coin” ? Now it makes CENTS (lol) thanks for explaining this! This whole time I’m thinking that the die has struck the coin twice causing a dd! Thank you so much for all you share! I learned a lot from your videos!

Both of the doubled parts of the letter/number should be rounded, not one of them flat, like a shelf. I call the flat/shelf side a ghost because when you rotate the coin in the light, the flat/shelf part of the “doubling” disappears. If that happens ,it’s not a doubled die. That happens when the die carves off a small sliver of the number/letter and flattens it next to the device. It’s really a flat shiny gold or silver area that looks like a doubled die, but disappears when looked at from all angles in the light.
