Stockyard Industrial Lead: Painting SPSF B23-S7 in the Kodachrome Scheme

  • This video shows the steps I take when painting the kodachrome paint scheme, this time using the kitbashed B23-S7 locomotive model. I usually use Badger ModelFlex paints for airbrushing and use SP Letter Gray for the primer, ATSF Yellow, SP Scarlet Red, and Engine Black for the main colors.

    SPSF had a real special place for Dad and me, and now that I'm teaching myself how to detail and paint my own locomotives, I ended up doing this as my first paint project. It looks like I followed all the steps right on a junked Athearn GP9 shell I got for free, but did not account for humidity when painting and there was so much chipping and paint running behind where the tape peeled back. This has been a very informative video, for sure!

      Sorry for the super late response, I have been taking a break from videos and plan to start up posting again soon. I am glad you tried out some painting on your own! I will be doing a few more kodachromes in the near future, so stay tuned!

    Man, that looks nice. I love the SPSF Kodachrome scheme and I love the GE Dash-8 styling.

    Nice Work Eric! Neat Tip on masking the Bonnet!

      @emillerz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! It's definitely easier than it looks and the warbonnet curve varies by locomotive, so it doesn't have to be perfect.

    Wow, really nice work on a difficult paint scheme

      Thanks! It is actually fun when I don't do it too often, maybe once every couple years or so! :)

    Always use the Tamiya tape (Or pinstriping tape) for line/shape details, blue painters mask is corrugated and allows paint to bleed through the edges no matter how much you mash it down. The Blue tape is ribbed and no good for Spray/Airbrushing, also lessens the amount of brush touch up work needed after. Great work and the end result looks great!
    The blue mask tape is great for large areas and you can use the pinstriping tape at the edges to prevent edge bleed.

    I agree with you on the paint scheme I love it too! I wish that merger would have been approved too. I have locomotives in that scheme as well.

    Truly nice work. I think I'll apply similar style as a tribute to the Kodachrome on some of my locomotives for the train simulator game I have. The locos won't look exactly like Kodachrome but will be close enough to remind people of the Kodachrome that SPSF had as an inspiration. Will then feature it on my TH-cam channel with a survey video to follow.

    Nice paint job Eric. I model Australian trains but I agree with you that, thats a nice scheme. Although I don't think I'd want to do all that masking on a whole fleet of locos lol

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah, I definitely would not want to do an entire fleet of kodachromes!

    Just think if the KCS AND THE CP OR CN would have started painting? Wow What kind of really kool paint schemes would that have made! Im all for theyre screw ups as they are called the more wicked paint the better. Loving SPSF in Omaha.

    Awesome and excellent job. Hopefully I can try this since they are hard to find and expensive if u do find. Just not as great as a pai ter though..

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Definitely give it a try, you can always test painting on a random freight car to get a good feel for painting first. I think the hardest part is masking off all the different colors, not necessarily the painting itself.

    How do you prepare the Badger paints? Do they need thinning? I don't care for AV paints and of course Model Master is going away...

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually don't adjust the Badger ModelFlex paints at all and didn't with this project. Sometimes I add a little Windex, but usually just to thin some of the older paint. Usually it's perfect right out of the bottle.

    That's a dash 8 not a dash 7

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it's a hybrid of both - the GE Super 7 program upgraded the Universal series by using technology from the Dash 7 and Dash 8 lines.
