Appreciate everything Matt does and am inspired by his attention to detail and obsessiveness. That said, and I’m borrowing one of Matt’s words, I think the Tool Grid system looks janky. I get that foam isn’t necessarily the answer either from an efficiency standpoint. But this ain’t it. For sockets, i dig the magnetic ones that have the socket size so that you can see it from the top quickly.
Sockets left to right. Metric on the left and standard on the right.
1/4 in the front then 3/8s, 1/2 in the back. Ratchets and extensions in front of the sockets.
Agreed, I have my socket drawer set up like that
I use my tools everyday and have been organizing them for 37 years. I’ve found that every system has its pros and cons. I use a variety of different products, it’s not going to pass an OG inspection but it works. Thin yoga mats for drawer liners, you’ll never go back.
Wow, never watching any of your channel my first impression was “ oh no, another glam garage show” but I kept on watching in louder with crowder spirit, change my mind. First thing that captured my attention was the $30k toolbox giveaway!!! Holy cow! I kept on watching in interest. I appreciate my 40 year tool collection. I’ve been into cars and other mechanical hobby for almost 50 years, every tool has its own personality, love tools.
Great episode and interesting org strategies.
Welcome to the channel.
Matt, been on a similar tool and toolbox organization quest. So far, I’ve been loving the ToolBox Widget system. So simple to use, modular and easy move around and update things.
I’ve had my tool grid stuff for almost 3 years and it is way better than anything else I tried 👍👍👍
I appreciate your attention to detail. I also appreciate the fact that you don’t drop an F-Bomb when you get that “Snappy” grease on you. Good stuff.
Check out some toolbox tours of career mechanics. Modularity is important.... sometimes you want to grab the whole rack of sockets. Also.... alot of guys don't have room for some organizers because they take up too much real estate. I appreciate your commitment to the details....
Semi deep sockets are probably one of the best things Snap-on has
Definitely should have a full set of 3/8 impact sockets in there. Most used sockets for an automotive tech
Second draw should be for wrenches, don’t waste it on screwdrivers
3rd draw for pliers
I agree on all points. 👍🏻
I keep my box organized to save time, and if that is the goal, you need complete sets of impacts (at least 3/8 and 1/2) with universals. I'm a hobbiest and have an entire drawer of just impacts and that does no includ the battery powered guns.
I have (re) organized my boxes dozens of times. After 45 years of wrenching i have bought and continue to buy tools. It seems that when i get my sockets set up perfectly then i buy another set of a different style. Yes it is a sickness and i admit it, isnt that the first step? Same with wrenches, ratchets, pliers and every other tool known. They keep upgrading and offering different features so .....
90% is tool truck tools, mostly Snap On but a few Mac and Matco mixed in.
I do like this system, definitely worth a look.
If you're constantly buying new things and want to keep them organized, Tool Grid is going to be your best option.
A sheet of peg board is cheap, will always be available, easy to work with, and debatable that its more environmentally friendly.
Dude I absolutely love your humor and sarcasm - I was laughing so hard with your recks to effects remake and pimping up your lady with Matco swag. I also loved your auctioning gig with giving out the catalog sales pricing. Please continue the satire and comedy and I’ll continue to view
Matt this is why I like what you do, your attention to detail is really amazing.
I appreciate that.
I appreciate how the grids lock together now, however the new 6x6 boards are way more expensice then before even if the shipping is less. my top drawer took two sheets which costs the same as 1 16pc of the new boards. and it appear you need 3-4 so roughly 3.5 times more.
Even though I have a green box I gave you a thumbs up. lol. Opinions should not hurt people’s feelings. We all have our own opinions
Well said!
Gedore is also good to have a look at.I love their roll cabinets.Europian style but brilliant quality and look. Also Unior tools from Slovenia all made in Slovenia, top quality!Thank you
I’m seriously starting to consider my own business making toolbox organization.
I love the new marketing jingle Snap-on just came out with......."Snap-on Heritage: Keeping Mechanics in Debt for 100 Years"
With the ratchets in the foam push down on the head part of the ratchet and that'll make the handle part pop up
Thanks for sharing Matt. 40 mins of pure organizational bliss.
I do like that blue Snap-On cabinet. Hate to say it but it blends well with your OG blue decor.
Yeah... the color of it is pretty close to my E92 M3.
Most of the general hand tools come in the foam is for the aviation and some larger ship mechanics. They need to account for every tool they used on a job to ensure nothing was left inside of the plane or boat
Wow, I haven’t yet seen this system…awesome. It satisfies both my tool organization and my obsessive tendencies. Thanks, Matt!!
I’m the fastest to outright just defend Snap-on but the truth is just picking through what the market has the offer, and finding the best value. It’s the only way to get the right stuff.
Yep…
I wish I could keep my shop that clean and organized lol. a definite goal
I'm 4-5 years into my tool grid and I still move my top drawer around constantly
It’s one thing to have a very good tool brand. But to have bought full tool collections from multiple brands for real comparisons is truly obsessive 👏 that’s awesome
I always like to see other ways to organize tools. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching.
I know it’s probably not going to happen but it would be cool to see these compared to a complete Tekton set in a Harbor Freight box to get a good, better, best example. Love the video.
That would be cool.
If you get back to me in a year I may have a toolbox tour for you lol. Series 3 56" and going all in on Tekton for sockets and bits/drivers. Mixed Japanese, German, and USA on pliers, screwdrivers, and other stuff though.
I am a big fan of the Milwaukee hand tools. Maybe you should do a set of those.
This is so me. And then to add to it. Going on the ground to use a pallet as a workbench and vice grips as a vice, yet you have every single possible tool and work benches imaginable sitting right in front of you. I do that crap all the time!!
I think a good way to sell a “grided” out set would to be include a large labeled piece of paper or something like that which will serve as a template to lay over the drawers to make it easier to re create your exact setup.
One of the major benefits of using Tool Grid is being able to organize tools in the best way that works on a person to person basis. Predetermined configurations goes against that.
Some people are not that good at organizing, seeing you already did all the leg work I could see how a template would be a good starting point
Been waiting for this video for the longest time
I have a combination of Snap-on, Hazet, Knipex, and PB Swiss. All great imo.
Just found your channel and all I can say is 😍😍😍😍
Can’t wait to purchase mine !
As mentioned before, six years ago before I knew about OG I went down the organization path and found the Ernst organizers you mentioned in the video. Fast forward to now, I'd say I prefer the Tool Grid system for it's space savings and a much more customized layout. Even though I welcome the new 6x6 tiles, I would have liked a larger option that would offer less seams.
Props to Tool Grid doing these 6x6 boards. I have the originals in my Sonic cabinets, and while they work great, I would have preferred these small boards! For anyone looking into Tool Grid, just be mindful in some drawers that it adds to the overall height (think wrenches on end).
I as well can not stand the need to start adding gaps between sockets and tools in a tool grid as they progressively get bigger. Their definity is no perfect product for organization but I personally enjoy the versatility of the Toolbox Widgets. I just like not being constrained by only using locations predetermined by a hole. I think you would really appreciate my boxes organization, we both enjoy the task of finding the best layout possible.
Well said, and should be a consideration to anybody setting up diversity in their tool organization.
As we get new tools so goes our new set up
😮 Whoa! I have 1/2 dozen Snap-On tools, but could never afford nor would I use those tools. You must have a good accountant...
Maybe check Koken I’ve heard really good stuff about them. Friend has a 72 tooth ratchet and it feels awesome, handle is great.
I've been looking over their catalog.
Either you’re losing weight or those toolboxes are huge.
Love that SnapOn for real. I’d PPF that thing.
One of the mechanics in my shop just put a tool grid system in his service cart and damn are they ever nice
I've been looking for a good system to organize my box. Definitely need to get this. Great video!
I've got everything you need to do it.
obsessedgarage.com/collections/tool-grid
I loved the big toolgrid sheets. Just cut them with a table saw. They did need an interconnect like this small ones have. 6 inch squares are just too small. I get the whole shipping prices though. I bought all mine from a matco dealer in Canada it wasn’t cheap but its such a game changer
WOW! $20 or $30K on Snap-On tools! I wish I could buy $1,000 of tools. Thanks for sharing, makes me feel small. j/k
Keep up the good work More tools and tool boxes also mobile storage solutions or service truck thank you!
Man I love my Koken Z-Series sockets! Unfortunately they only make the most common stuff in their z-series so makes it difficult to do full complete sets OG style
I've never seen someone who doesn't seem use tools very often spend so much on tools.
I use tools almost every day.
Obsessed garage should 3d scan all of these tools. Then you could set up a website and have clients just virtually place the tools they choose and then you have a file for custom foam machining
Even easier, take a picture of a tool and cut a ‘shadow’ of whatever orientation it would be in the foam, make sure it’s scaled properly and you’re set. I did a similar thing in school for laser cutting acrylic
I’ve tried those solutions. They are always terrible.
I would love to jump ahead a few years to see what this tool journey evolves into. My guess is an epic box nearly full of Euro and Japanese stuff. Problem is no one brand does everything perfect. Take Knipex for example; you'd think you couldn't lose having all your pliers from this company and then you discover the Wiha Magic Tip circlip pliers. 😫
You made my day maxmad3428. I have most of the Wiha screwdrivers 🪛 and really impressed with their quality. I because I do a lot of engine work I’m excited to get a set of their sir clip pliers in my hands. Thanks for the heads up.
Not sure if Mike's Ford and the stacker trailer can carry those tool boxes to the winners as they are so jammed packed with good, high quality and weighty stuff.
Good for you for making a living with this
But if you go to any mechanics tool box who is trying to provide for his family this is not how it works or looks
Maybe mechanics should consider listening to me. Then they would end up owning the shop, not working in it.
Thought this man was sonic only for the longest time 😂 can’t keep track of this guy
I bought all this stuff for the purpose of making comparisons to other brands.
@@ObsessedGarage I’m here for it!
Have you had a chance to come up with a starter package for a socket drawer, that includes the Mats as well as what you would need for the sockets, ratchets n extensions?
Not yet, but I'm working toward it.
Like how upfront on how your recouping the cost through the giveaway. Snap is slow on making tools, it took 6 months to get a 16oz red hammer.
Lake County Florida here also and i think i know your snappy guy
Nice 👍
Snap on tools !
Whia makes some of the best screwdrivers in the world
Lol anyone watching this, ORGANIZE IT TO YOURE MOST EFFICIENT WAY POSSIBLE! NO NEED TO COPY PEOPLE WHO DONT EVEN WRENCH ON CARS LOL
What are you talking about? What you just said doesn't even make sense.
Someone needs to watch some videos
LOL, LOL, LOL, LOL, LOL
You are most efficient way possible?
What does his profession have to do with show casing a organizing system? Of course each person will set up his tool box to his liking, I do not remember him saying you must do it this way.
Why did you yell that to everyone? Not to mention what you said makes no damn sense.
How many boxes were used for the top drawer ? Thank you in advance
Just ordered a s15 myself. The top drawer is massive in height, do you feel the sockets and other things is getting hard to find down there?😂
I wouldn't put sockets and ratchets in the top drawer of the S15. It's too deep for that.
Douchey colors. Yep, I’d say that sounds about right. 🤣👍🏻
I hate upright socket holders, it's too hard to see the size. I like them all laying flat with the size imprint facing up.
Was thinking the exact same thing. I prefer laid flat for quick identification. Guess this is the way to go in order to maximize space. No perfect method unfortunately.
that is a massive waste of space
I have Tekton sockets. Ernst mfg makes the socket holders that come with them. They have stickers you can apply to the side of each holder with the sizes so that you can read them looking down on them.
Wish I had the space to even think about laying sockets flat.
As an amateur, I cannot recognize bolt sizes by sight so I prefer socket rails that allow me to take a set to where I am working and figure out the size without going back and forth to the box. Tool Grid looks amazing, but its not for me.
If you ever do any tool giveaway I’ll love for you to keep me in mind
Doesn’t need to be 30k worth of tools I’ll take even ur old used tools that don’t use or need or even cheap harbor freight tools I’m using tools I’ve gotten cheap or free on market place to work on my car and I just got a nice tool box and wanna be able to fill up with tools
So that is a NO on the Ernst? I was kinda hoping you would like those.
It’s okay. Tool Grid is better.
Next week he will move them back to other rolling tool box.....😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love this and agree with Matt. But I'd still take the snap on box lol
damn this giveaway would be dope if this was available outside the US. Now don't get me wrong I understand why it cant be like that but hey a guy can dream.
How many tool grid squares should
I order to do both top drawer and second drawer. I have an epic series dad well
They are 6" squared. Just take you depth and width dimensions to count how many front the back and left to right. Then multiply that number.
@@ObsessedGarageI guess I wanted to know how many you used for 2 full length drawers. I believe we have the exact same size tool box. I already have the old style peg boards in my old box.
I'm not sure. I did this box 8 months ago or so.
i swear we’re like the same person
I love this 💩
If I see you in Helen or around the area I’m going to ask you to sign my baby’s head and we’ll get it tatted on her for that sonic box
I apprecite tool orginzation but this is different. This is more about presentation. With that said...I would pay someone to organize my box like this but I would not do it myself.
Does he ever say how many squares he used in the drawer?
Snap-on is going to have to make the Matty special in their catalog for everyone that’s going to want everything you’ve bought. I appreciate everything you do and giving honest reviews. I just wish I had the budget to purchase it all, maybe one day.
I feel like sockets read better stored sideways
I agree.
Inspired me.
How do you not get pissed off when pulling out the wrong socket
It seems like if your not selling it in your store it's no good😘
If I don't like it I'm not selling it.
@@ObsessedGarage your not getting rich off of me pal
I to this as my job, my most used size of socket are the "semi deep". i didnt see any in the video, just shorts and deep for the sockets. Also why the normal wrenches, flank drive plus wrenches are the reason you buy snap on wrenches. coming oil is for us people in the shop with no climate control so they dont rust
I had to make a choice on which to get to keep from spending $100k on tools that I don’t really like very much, so I picked deep and shallow.
@@ObsessedGarage yup understood. Excited to watch all the tools series and I’m not brand loyal at all…. Just snap on truck is the most convenient/consistent coming to my work place.
Gedore, wright, proto
And how does the labeling work?
Apply the label that matches the measurement for each socket.
Sadly Europe is out of spec in this giveaway :(
He probably isn’t doing any work with how clean everything is
Isn't that the goal in life?
ocd therapy
Where do labels go?
The labels go directly onto the Tool Grid.
My biggest problem with systems like this grid is that it consumes height in the drawer. I already have deep sockets that almost touch the cabinet when closing and this would make it so the drawer can't close.
The 6x6 boards are 3/8" thick, so I can realistically see there being a clearance issue for deep well sockets.
Buddy, you could just start w one 😂😂😂or two even
Douchey colors LOL bro
👍
Hey Matt. I feel like the snap on is a shiny Corvette. Sonic stuff is a polished Porsche.
The snap on 1/2 chrome sockets are unbelievably over priced.
This bothers me a bit. All sockets together, ratchets together, extensions together.
I prefer them to be grouped by what size drive they have.
What kind of mechanic are you rocket motor mechanic? Don’t wanna get dirty? Let’s be honest you don’t really wrench.
The goal of a tool is to have it when you need it.
Bro do you even wrench? 🤣🤣🤣 every time I see your videos someone else is doing your work….
I use tools almost every day. Not everything I do is documented on here.
I'm sorry, if you paid 30k for the few tools you have, you got screwed.
( Matt ) man I have space left I gotta buy more shit 😂 every man’s addiction 🤌
