Fun Fish in Polymer Clay, a Tutorial

  • These fish are such fun to make in polymer clay. I show you how to make them as wall decorations, but they are also great as card toppers, or in any polymer clay design piece. I take you step by step through the process, so sit back, relax, and watch before having fun creating some of your own.
    The Fun Fish Template is available for your personal use and is a downloadable PDF found at the very bottom of the TH-cam Video page of my website - TH-cam Videos -www.fionaabel-s...
    Here is the link to Conditioning Polymer Clay - • Conditioning Polymer C...
    Here is the link to creating Skinner Blends - • Basic Skinner Blend Tu...
    The measuring sheet can be found here - www.printablep...
    The small round cutters can either be bought in a set specifically used for polymer clay from many shops on Etsy, (I originally got mine from MyMandarinDucky on Etsy - www.etsy.com/u... ) or somewhere like PCUK Tools - www.pcuktools.... but I have also bought them direct off eBay, where you can search under ‘Cord Pin End Crimp Terminal Wire Copper Connectors’, to find similar cutters, but you will get a huge amount all the same sizes.
    If you like my work, then please do have a look at my website, www.fionaabel-s... and follow me on Facebook / fiona.abelsmith and Instagram. / fionaabelsmith.artist
    I also have a number of Polymer Clay Tutorials to buy, both in my Etsy shop, PolyOriginals - www.etsy.com/u... where I have more tutorials in a PDF format, and as a video tutorial here - polyoriginals.t...
    The music from the video is English Country Garden by Aaron Kenny and is available from the TH-cam Free Audio Library.
    Thank you so much for watching.

    Hello Fiona. As you know my grandson (Dexter) and I do our clay together and watch you together. He’s having a sleepover (we have been in a bubble as a family so we are safe, they look after me, I’m super lucky). Anyhoo, while watching you, your soothing voice was as good as a bedtime story and off he went!😂😂😂 We will be watching you again tomorrow, he will NOT miss a thing you do. Great tutorial and ty for the help in grand baby sitting 😆

    I appreciate the fact that not only do you list the equipment needed but also show them. I also appreciate how you list amounts and I’m very thankful you use Fimo soft because has been so much easily accessible to me during this current polymer clay shortage.

      I am so glad it is helpful, I do wonder about doing it at times, as it delays the start of the process, but on balance I think I have had more comments in favour than against, so I will continue to do it :) thank you so much for the very helpful feedback :) And yes, FIMO seems for many people to have been easier to get hold of than some of the other brands during the last couple of years :)

    Perfect. I’ve thinking about creating some fish. The problem is I want to hang them around my garden so passers by can be entertained this summer.
    Can polymer clay last outside? Does it disintegrate in sun and rain? Above the garden that would contaminate the soil. I don’t want that. I might have to use wood.

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Many people use polymer clay outside, and there is no problem 'contaminating' the soil. Some colours do fade more quickly than others, so a shaded area would be better, and of course baking sun and very hot temperatures may cause some damage. I have had my covered flower pots in the garden for 2 years now, during hot days - up to 37 degrees, and cold nights, down to -10 degrees and they are fine so far :) The orange clay did fade slightly, but that is all, so go ahead and make them for the garden :) have a look online and you will see quite a few people have hung polymer clay in their gardens :)

    Love these! I want to try making some of them. I do have a question though. I notice you use paint fairly often in different ways. I have only tried acrylic paint on a baked piece of polymer clay once and it never dried. Not even weeks later--remained sticky. Do you know what the problem is? Is it the type of clay or the type of paint? Or something else?

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is the type of paint :( some work well and some just never dry. Go the The Blue Bottle Tree and look up articles on paint, Ginger has some good suggestions, and then ask around in forums in the country you are in as to which paint people use on clay that works well. as sometimes brands differ even between countries. I hope that helps, and at least you know it is nothing you are doing wrong :) The Blue Bottle Tree is here - thebluebottletree.com/ :)

      It has been awhile since I’ve worked in polymer clay (use to create miniatures years ago) and one problem I would have was painting before baking. Some paint colors would change during baking. Makes sense now, but was hard to accept then. 😂

    I like the orange fish the most. However there's no point in having a gradient in the fish's body, because (1) the gradient isn't visible underneath the scales and (2) the gradient is covered by another layer of monochromatic clay underneath/on the backside.
