* Beginner to Intermediate level polymer clay cane tutorial showing from beginning to end how to build the cane that is shown.

- Includes instructions for making a Skinner blend that was originally developed by Judith Skinner and now used by most polymer clay artists to create color gradients in polymer clay designs
- Finished product is a cane that can be reduced to desired size and sliced (with every slice being almost identical to the rest) and used in an unlimited number of clay projects
Materials needed - 3 blocks of white polymer clay (I used 2 Premo and 1 Souffle) and 2 blocks of black (I used 1 Premo and 1 Souffle)
Tools needed - Acrylic rod, blade, pasta machine
Optional tools - knitting needle, bone folder, extruder with a disc with a tiny round hole
- Instructions are given for exact colors and amounts, but please, please, please, let your creativity be your guide! Use your own colors, modify the design, go wild!!!
- The design for this cane was adapted from the ink and colored pencil drawing I did that is shown at the beginning of the video.

What a fun tutorial! A bunch of polymer clay artists are getting together to regularly meet, and choosing an online tutorial for us all to follow. It's always fun to see how a group of people can look at the same tutorial and come up with quite varied results! Just made a slightly different version of the dots and spirals and I feel compelled to tell you that although I can not slice a cane to save my life, this is what I consider to be my successfully excited cane. I had thought I was just drained to not be a caner and would have to satisfy my clay "addiction" in other forms.... Thanks to your "slow, steady, ridiculously detailed style" as you call it I knew exactly how much clay to use to acheive the desired effects. I have watched a lot of videos and have found some wonderful mentors and tutors out there....but something about the way you go about it resonates with me and gave me the confidence to try something I previously would have thought to be more than I was capable of. I feel like I'm fan girling right now....lol but thank you! You have no idea how much it means to me to know that it'll take some practice but that I am indeed capable of getting the pretty things in my head and my heart out of me and into the clay after all!!!! Not gonna lie....I almost cried a little. THANK YOU, Anita....thank you thank you thank you!!!

I'm glad I made the other cane first or I would have been. Afraid of this one but it was so much easier than I thought. It only took a little over an hour. This is an awesome cane! I like your style of teaching, and the fact that you don’t try to be absolutely perfect at every stage. I also thought the bullseye cane being extruded into a smaller version was brilliant. I didn’t realise that you could do that. Thank you so much.
Marion Mathews Thank you! The really cool thing about extruding canes is that even canes with a more intricate pattern than a bullseye can be reduced by extruding it- it just makes a little tiny version of whatever the cane looked like before!

Love this cane, gonna try it today! Walnut Hallow extruder is hard to hold on to, I found that if I wrapped the outside of the barrel with a 2" strip of Velcro (the soft fuzzy side) then reinforced with a little bit of duct tape to make it very secure, it made the barrel fatter and much more hand friendly. Also using a thin coat of Vaseline on the rubber washer at the bottom of the plunger helps immensely with extruding.

This is another fabulous cane - thank you so much. What a good idea to mix some Soufflé in with the Premo...I always find that my thin clay sticks badly so I hope my future fan folded blocks will look a lot better!

Nee Nee Ree I recently discovered Soufflé for cane-making thanks to Teresa Salgado, and its lack of stickiness is making it a favourite....but I've still needed Premo for its colour range, so it's good to know I can de-stickify it with some Soufflé!
A very cool cane! After watching so many struggling with extruders, I was thrilled to see the caulk gun tip. Will it work with the one with the crank handle? That’s the one I have. I love your tutorial....taking us from beginning to end, explaining everything so well....it’s just what I, personally, need. Thanks so much....on my way to subscribe!
Penny Venturino if you mean the extruded with the handle that turns, nope, it won’t work. It only works with an extender with a plunger.

This is just such a well made video. Thank you! I do have a question and I may have missed it but where did you get the half block of black? Did you use 1 and 1/2 blocks of the black for the skinner blend?
