    SHE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS EVER! Her novel The Calculating Stars is literally one of my 2 favorite books of all time, and it won both the Hugo AND the Nebula. She is SO good. I'd love to see you interview her again after you read more of her stuff because she is probably one of the best authors working in SFF today.

    I enjoyed the conversation around Writer's Block. I think Mary's advice can also be translated for all spectrums of creative block. I've heard two sides to the trauma of 2020 for creatives, either it's the most creative time they've ever experienced, or their creative side is hindered by it.
    Also interesting to learn she studied Theatre and puppetry, I'm a theatre major as well. Theatre geeks unite!

    • @thissideofmyworld7216
      @thissideofmyworld7216 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can’t agree more with you about the two sides to the trauma! I just happened to have experienced both. As a musician my creativity just dropped significantly and I am deeply discouraged by that. But I discovered writing fiction as a new expression of art for myself and in that regard I’m flying through the pages, can’t stop at it. I just hope if anyone’s having a Creativity Block in any way she/he can reflect the artistic facet on some other way, I’m sure everyone could find one

    • @jchinckley
      @jchinckley 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. That title in the non-literary dept goes to The Quartering who produces (albeit not as entertaining as Daniel) up to 7 videos a day 7 days a week (I guess he has pulled back to 5-6 on 5-6 days of the week now). His production rate is insane.
      This is not to endorse him nor take sides in any political or cultural discussion, it's just the observation of how much he produces.

  • @MagusMarquillin
    @MagusMarquillin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Daniel, I'm not sure if your trying other styles or had a technical reason for changing this, but I much prefer when you have interviewer and interviewee on screen at the same time, there can be a lot communicated in body language before someone starts speaking - like I imagine her eyes might have lit up when you asked if she was a Star Trek fan, which confirmed the answer for you before you (or the software?) cut back - it'd be nice to be able to see things like that.
    But, another good interview!

    Got to spend time with her and Brandon on a Writing Excuses cruise. I had read a couple of her regency fantasy novels (think Jane Austen with magic). We were on shore in Nassau with a small group going to have high tea, and I commented to her how as the first novel approached that kind of classic Jane Austen moment where the potential lovers finally kiss, I wondered if she could pull if off. Jane Austen sets the tension such that it’s a powerful release and can be very moving. I told her that I was surprised that she pulled it off and I was actually a bit teary-eyed. She did a little fist-pump and said, “Yes!” Of the movies, we agreed that Persuasion was the best. I had asked both her and Brandon who was their favorite fantasy author and both responded, “Guy Gavriel Kay.”

    Her explanation of the two of them planing together and picking things apart is so interesting because it theoretically could eliminate plot holes. Two major literary minds writing something together but from entirely different perspectives. This seems like the ultimate way to write.
