My dad gave me my grandfather's '69 autostick. Driving it home for the first time I was resting my hand on the stick at a stop light after taking it out of gear. Bad move. When the light turned green I couldn`t get it in gear because the vacuum escape from the tank. Of course the pneumatic hoses were leaking so it took about a minute or two for the vacuum tank to get enough vacuum from the manifold so I could get it back in gear. The folks behind me were not amused. Funny day. Happy to find your channel.
It's good to see videos on the VW Autostick. It's often under-appreciated, but it's still a delightful hybrid of a manual and automatic transmission. I love my '70 AS Bug.
Got a '69 Autostick that I've had since High School in the 1970s... Put it in storage when I went into the service in the 1980s. I am 62 now. Thanks for posting these videos. The typical Goon hated the Autostick and often converted it to manual. They're great Beetles. You just can't dog them out like you can do a manual.
I remember fondly the '73 Bug I owned. Three speed stick with no clutch. When you wanted to change gears you simply rested your hand on the stick (slight downward pressure) and you would feel/hear the gears disengage, at which point you'd just move the stick to next gear and allow it pop back up and into gear. Super smooth and fun to drive. YEARS ago when I traded it towards a new car, it was hilarious watching the guys at the dealership try to drive it. For whatever reason, none of them could seen to get the feel of it. I honestly never really understood this. It always felt so freakin' simple and intuitive to me. *No surprise, I really miss that little car nowadays. It certainly wasn't anything fancy but it was fun to drive. 😊
what would happen if the solenoid was constantly engaged (say from the wire to the shifter having a direct short to ground) holding the clutch lever in at all times?
Wow I just found your channel! I hope you’re still around. My 70 auto stick clutch doesn’t seem to be fully disengaging. Might that be the adjustment screw on the top of the servo? Thanks ✌🏻🇺🇸
I need the schematic to figure out why my auto stick isn't working why I cannot put the car in the gear to drive it. Which book or where can I get the schematic
Where can I buy a new control valve? I just bought a 72 vw beetle autostick and it runs but I can't get it to go into gear it just grinds...I don't know anything about this...ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!
Hello! I just purchased a 73 beetle and I am in love. We were having a bit of an issue with her autostick so we watched a bunch of your videos. We replaced the diaphragm in the servo and now she is shifting into all gears smoothly but she won't move. Do you happen to know what we may have done wrong?
Hi Is there an adjustment on my 71 Autostick that will stop it from jumping when I put it into gear? I believe my vacuum lines are hooked up correctly.
Any VW dealership should carry them? Call around. That's at least where I got mine. They have a spiral wire inside to keep the vacuum from collapsing them... I tried a substitute and learned the hard way when the thing collapsed! Strong vacuum...
Thanks Brent. Have restored many VW's over the years but this is first autostick. We are figuring it out as we go, but excited to keep an autostick alive. Really cool the way Volkswagen got this system to work. More autostick videos to come, including our first drive.
Gilbert Muniz Hi Gilbert, ours is doing the same, assumming you mean car really grabs and thuds when going into reverse, but others are nice. We are investigating and will let you.know what we sort out. Was -13 here today so may have to wait till it gets a little warmer. Hands still cold for 2nd test drive :)
Our idea speed was too high, reducing improved smoothness of shifting. Manual also recommended checking control valve adjustment.Clutch engaging to quickly adjust screw between a quarter and half a turn clockwise. Been really cold here lately, if spring decides to show up we will try to get a video showing the adjustments and changes the idea speed made. Thanks and good luck.
I had an auto stick back in the 80s and woul reverse the contacts on the cellanoid valve and it would make the rear of the car drop a couple inches about 3” when I would drop it in gear the ass end would drop and the other lane would want to race me lol, did it for years. It was fun too do
Thanku for the videos, I recently acquired a 70 beetle with 44,000 miles on it and not running, turns out they had the wires all backwards on the coil meaning no start condition to the distribuitar and no power to control cellanoid. Your semi videos made this a easy repair thanku.
Thanks for this - recently got a 1970 NSU Ro80, which hasthis system of gearshifting. It is not working properly so this should help me get to the problem.
HI you spoke of a micro switch activating the valve with just a little touch of the stick. Do you have a video of this micro switch and how to replace or repair? I may have this problem because everything else is ok. thanks... Romel
Garage Time would you know why my second gear would let me pull it into gear but once I let go it starts grinding? I have a video of the problem on my account
I have a question my stickshift works fine and engages but engine not idling correctly, if I remove one wire from the control valve it runs fine, when back on runs rough any ideas ? Thanks Andy
Thanks for the video! Do you mind a question? My control valve does not clunk and swoosh. Electrical is good and clutch servo engages well but cant shift. Control valve make a his and bahhh (like a sheep) sound! Stumped.
Hi All, I have a 1970 Ghia Aoutstick that jerks when I am stopped and shift into gear, forward and reverse. Any thoughts or fixes on this problem? Thanks!
Hello garage time can you show or explain where exactly is the neutral safety switch and how it runs to connect to the control valve. I think this wire on my 74 bug is somehow disconnected......Thanks
Romel Nelson Hi Ronel, please check out our video 'VW Autostick - Neutral Safety Switch - Check with Multimeter' we explain and show schematic. Let us know if you need further information or pictures. Thanks
Hey Garage i just finished looking at the Neutral Safety Switch video. I'm not able to see on your schematic where it's located on the car. Do you recommend i buy a Bentleys Manual?. thank you
Romel Nelson Yes, have found the Bentley manual very helpful for both working and understanding the autostick. The neutral safety switch is on the drivers side up near the nose cone of the transmission. Very hard to get at while transmission is in the car, but it can be done. Please don't forget to subscribe, we need your help to keep this channel going. Thanks.
I have a problem with my vw 69 auto stick I put the change to start and it feels without force but I take out and put the change and then normal advance you think it is transmission or clucht is the first autostick I have
Garage Time thanks so i was wondering if i could upload a picture of my engine bay wiring and relay in back seat and get your opinion cause im sure the wires are outta wack thanks guys im much grateful i just need to make room in the garage to get the other vws working haha

Hi

Mine did too! No idea why. Carb maybe?
There is an adjusting screw on top of the control valve.
Hey, Mike! Where did you get the new hoses for the control valve?

Very helpful information

Why does my autostick shift hard when I go from neutral to reverse & reverse to Lo , not so much into 1st... any thoughts.. thanks

Hello, here it is: VW Autostick - Stick shift - disassembly/reassembly replace contact point th-cam.com/video/GMKa08t-fSc/w-d-xo.html
Where do you get your vacuum hose? And do you know how much vacuum pressure you should be getting
Hoses from Cip1, but cannot answer pressure, not sure how much. Sorry.

Correction. It sounds like a duck-call from the control valve filter
Hi All,
I have a 1970 Ghia Aoutstick that jerks when I am stopped and shift into gear, forward and reverse. Any thoughts or fixes on this problem? Thanks!
Think you clutch servo, that is where I would start.
