      They are unique. I have a 68 beetle autostick. Being a VW owner most of all.my.life. They just don't feel the same. Kind if feel not natural. I bought my 68 in 03. I have driven it less than 50 miles since. I cant believe they were less built than manual. They are actually worth less in book value. The sentimental value behind my car is priceless. If I had an Autostick, I'd never want to convert it, even if I personally preferred the 4 speed. The Autostick just makes it a more interesting car, and I suspect that with all the conversions, the ones that still have the Autostick intact will ultimately be worth more.

    Also if it had the original engine...it will have a dual oil pump....sort of one stacked on another used to pump the ATF . Also it had a huge vacuum port on the left side of the intake with a hose going to that solenoid mounted on the left side of the firewall.
    Also....the speedometers....just to let you know.
    80 mph was for the early cars 25-36 hp
    The new 1300-1500 cc engined cars....early 60s-1970...got a 90 mph Speedo. And a 100 mph speedo would denote a 1600 cc engine.

    The bracket on the driver’s side was also used for a vacuum port. My dads 70 has the vacuum port at that same spot. Also gages can be changed with on that has the light. Those aren’t really good ways the tell. The best is the get the birth certificate for your car. I got one for my 69 and it $75.

    • @Volkswagenplanet
      @Volkswagenplanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. I paid 225 back in the day for my 68 autostick. You do know even the birth certificate are close , but not always correct. VW unfortunately did not keep the best of records. A example is missing info on the certificate. Items like case #s are usually missing. I bought the 68 from the original owner fully documented. Every oil change.....
      I supplied the case number when I bought the certificate and came back unknown. These cars usually came in 2 versions from 68 and up. Base and deluxe models. Which you can sport by the exterior chrome " looking" trim that go under the door and rear quarter glass. I have been in the VW game since 88. I probably only seen a handful of correct certificates. Don't put to much value in the birth certificate. Like you said things can and do get exchanged. These cars were mass produced and parts were dirt cheap. Also autostick was considered a rare option. Even though they are worth less and less desirable. Most were changed to manual as you know. The gauge didn't need to be replaced to do the conversion. All most every conversion I have seen still has the autostick gauge in it. I have to laugh when someone asks me to look at there " all original " beetle and that is the first item I look at it the gauge. VV claim that up to 5 percent of total beetle production from 68 and up were in fact autostick. I have factory and dealer parts # manuals in my collection. I'm not the most knowledgeable person on this topic, but I do have the reference material to answer most questions. If you ever need specifics # on autostick part numbers let me know. I will be more than happy to help you. I've spent years and a few thousand to get my hands on the info. I'm also always buying if you come across dealer items that I don't have. I'm always looking on eBay and other eBay countries as well. Thanks for commenting. Hope to chat again. Stay safe out there my friend

      @@Volkswagenplanet that is true. I got 69 7 years ago and it had 82 fenders on it. My dads 70 is all original and from the original owner. The weird thing is his case number is on the pink slip. Never saw that on an old car. It is hard to find out if what your came with or not. Like I have ac on mine but I put it on it. But back in the day you can get the dealership to do an add on and that won’t be on the certificate. I must have gotten lucky because mine did have the case number on it. But like you I am not en except at all. I got back into vw when I got my 69. I love learning all I can about it. This is a good video you put up.

      I also have a 68 autostick. Sorry to hear about your leg. Im glad there was a autostick so you get to enjoy what driving a classic VW is all about.
      Many don't know why the autostick was created. VW looked at sales statistics and realized most women didn't drive a manual transmission.
      From the years of 1968 and up through 1979 VW built the beetle and other models with this option. VW didn't keep statistics like we do today on production. It is believed that 1 :8 were autostick. It never really caught on. Even though less were made, they are worth less by book value. As time went parts became harder to obtain, a lot were switched to manual. .

    my former 1970 bug was an autostick before it was converted to manual as i had 3 flex plates break on me and the torque converter seal leaked as 12 years ago the frame tunnel rusted on it. as nowadays its recommended to convert 1968-1975 cars to a manual as the parts are no longer available to them. as it be hard to source a seal, torque converter or flex plate to them. as 1968 cars 1968 used the swingaxle on the manual cars as to convert a 1968 autostick you need a 1969-1972 4Speed IRS transmission and the clutch cable guide tube has to be put in on 1968-1970 cars.

    the thing that can help with fluid temperatures if you still have an autostick is to get a remote transmission cooler that has an electric fan on it it should keep the fluid cooler and get a thermostat that will activate the fan sooner if needed. as Summit racing has them as DeRale is the best

      @@Volkswagenplanet (I ALSO HAVE A 72 GHIA) dude! You have no idea how cheap and all in your garage building a 1915 really is! Just the 1915 stroker kit alone is cheap! Its like 700ish depending on where you get the kit from. Lots of places doing the vw aircooled after market. If your good with a engine refresh or just putting a engine together. The vw air cools need 0 machine work to put bigger pistons in. You simple change the cylinders and piston and buy a over sized kit. Like a dirt back or a any single pistons air cooled engine. Swap the crank and cam. With rods. Use a dremial. 1915 engine. And you dont need it but you could add a amr500 super charge thats like 200$ on amazon. And nail a 120hpw mark with a carb ontop of supercharger and rig a belt to it. Like no joke. You can stroker your 1600cc into a 1915 with 0 machine work. And you just need to pull the engine. Build it up. Break it in. Drop it in the car. Drive. I would love to know how long a auto stick would last with about 90hpw vs 40ish (stroker kit link without performance heads) link in seperate reply is just the 1915 stroker kit (reuse your heads and crank halfs) my bad i was wrong little machine work is required for a 1915. Dremial to the rescue. Seriously boss! Look into a 1915 build in house. At home diy. So many people. For decades have done it. Lately these turds from 50+ years ago are just magically popping up. The vw bug has ALOT of historical value and are just so fkin cool. Simple and fun toys that you can do all in house. (Reguarding all the other issues you stated intake and carb. The pipes to the head. The same. You can take a pair of vice grips and clap off the vaccum ports on the auto stick center stack. Crimping them closed. Buy a pic 3 carb. Call it a day. You remove wiring. Replace a trans mounts. Send it. Will need fly wheel. Can use and most stick bug guys swap the auto stick starter in for the fact the auto sticks have a self supported starters. And dont need the support bushing stick bugs needed. Plus they work both stick or auto. But a stick starter wont work on a auto stick. Get a used pedal set for a stick. New clutch cable. You will pro need some rubber tube thats on the trans related to your era auto stick. Fly wheel pressure plate. Throw out and clutch. Swap done. Plus engine built. 3000. 90hpw avg. Or more. And that for a bug. You and i both know is on steroids. Oh And a stick shift shifter. Auto stick stick dealo chuck it. No one rebuilds. Or sells autosticks i can find. And your stuck to used parts.
