    In this episode, we were on location for a secret, not-yet-released video (guess where in the comments!) and decided to set up and film HW News. The news last week included a follow-up to the alleged NVIDIA RTX 4090 Dragon (and other cards) with the US Government telling NVIDIA, basically, to 'deal with it.' We also cover the Steam Deck OLED's problem with a noisy headphone jack, which we were able to successfully recreate on some devices when plugged in. There's some additional talk about a community fix to the noisy Steam Deck OLED headphone jack. We also cover ASUS Ally mods that are getting wild, the RTX 5880's existence, and AMD's RDNA 3 idle power draw fixes.

    I think another important aspect when it comes to device noise being audible on headphones is the sensitivity. The IEM's presented have an impedance of 20.5ohm and sensitivity of 120dB/vRMS, meaning they'll be very susceptible to noise like that.
    But the DT 990 PRO 250ohm have sensitivity of 96dB/vRMS and the HD 6XX 300ohm have a sensitivity of 103dB/vRMS, which does lower the point at which such noise is hearable but it also makes them harder to drive since they are meant for studio usage.
    Then again don't quote me on that, I just know that both of these parameters matter in headphones and that IEM's are super sensitive to any kind of noise.

    • @MGMan37
      @MGMan37 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The kapton tape/screw loosening fix completely cures the noise even for sensitive IEMs.

    • @arthurmoore9488
      @arthurmoore9488 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MGMan37 True, but it's important to understand the issue. If you take an oscilloscope, you'll find some level of noise on the jack even after the fix. Though separating it from the background noise the scope picks up might not be easy.
      Why am I so confident? Because every audio system has noise. It's just not something that makes it onto the spec sheet for most consumer electronics. In this case, the designers/QA probably assumed the noise floor was higher, or the added impedance of headphones removed the noise.

      If it is an internal ground loop then it will have to be a hardware revision, and a true fix will probably be more complex than isolating the audio board since technically they should be getting rid of the difference in potential, while the community fix just masks it (which is absolutely fine for a community fix but not good enough for a full production solution).

    My 7900xtx is still idling at around 50 watts with the newest update. That's been pretty much consistent since I got it near launch. There have been a couple of times it dipped down to 20 watts, I think after updating drivers one of the previous times it was "fixed," but it didn't last. It would be back up to 50 again after a reboot or running a game or something. I have not been able to figure out the exact conditions that resulted in "good" idle power draw or reproduce it.
    EDIT: A little further investigation reveals that it's the adrenaline "metrics" tab itself causing the high power draw. Tipped off by the "tuning" tab reporting lower after a second or two, and then confirmed using GPU-Z and CPU-ID HWmonitor (couldn't find power reporting in HWinfo64) showing ~10-25w idle and then increasing to match what adrenaline was reporting when I opened the metrics tab. What a self-own. I weep for the nvidia competitor that COULD be if AMD just gave a shit.

    Definitely quite a few quality control issues with the OLED deck, on mine my left trackpad haptic was very noisy no matter the strength it was at while the right side was pretty quiet, ended up buying a Deck and the replacement was fine. WiFi driver for Linux is complete crap as it has trouble with 160Mhz at 5ghz using WPA3, WPA2 works better but it's not a 100% fix (think Valve has acknowledged the WiFi issues), plus BOE having lots of issues with dead pixels but those panels seem mostly limited to the LE OLED version. Both of my screens on the regular 1TB were Samsung and both were free of dead pixels thankfully. Seen one person with a disconnected audio cable internally that they had to reconnect, one had a dead speaker and one had a dirty looking thumbstick that couldn't be cleaned.
    Not great quality control on this OLED version but it's worth going through the hassle if you have to as the OLED panel on this is stunning.

    Great videos guys, just a small note, headphone impedance probably isn’t the best metric for knowing if a noise floor will be audible on a given pair of headphones or IEMs, as impedance doesn’t directly correlate to how audible the noise floor will be. Noise floor becomes audible because of a given amount of interference or crosstalk and the more power a headphones requires, the less this floor tends to be noticeable. A better metric would be the listed sensitivity usually noted in dB per watt, which is the measurement of how loud the headphones will get at a given power input.
