    For this type of recovery, I prefer to use the "HDR toning" in photoshop option. By adjusting it finely, i have a really good image using total dynamic range of image. Anyway, tks Aaron. Great tutorial the same.

    I'm slow on the draw here. Once you did the initial "apply image" and went on to the the layer mask explanation, what happened to the "apply image" layer? All I saw was the curves adjustment layer and the background layer. Is this section of instruction independent of what was done up to this point? Thanks. Phlearn is incredible - clear, relevant, and done at the proper pace.

    I do this sort of thing an awful lot, but I tend to reach for levels before curves :; shrug :: old habit and all -- but leveraging apply image to bring the adjustments into your image is a fantastic idea and timesaver!

  • @najda9237
    @najda9237 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    to be honest

    This is like what landscape photographers use to blend the sunset sky with the much darker foreground. You can have even more control using more selective luminosity masks, but it's unnecessary in this case. Apply image is the simplest form of luminosity masking. There's nothing wrong with a simple curve adjustment, it just looks different. Extreme shadow and highlight adjustments can get unnatural very quickly, and can introduce a visible halo. That can be avoided using luminosity masks when applied carefully. Apply image often gives you a fool-proof mask with a single click that you would have a very hard time creating by hand.

    I love your tutorials, Adam...and I've bought some of your stuff. OK...so I realize there are lots of different ways to do things in Photoshop...but really (as others have pointed out) there are better and easier ways of doing this...and...I got totally confused when you started using the Apply Image thing...a more detailed explanation of that would have helped. Also...why the music? All it does it distract from the learning process.

    • @marcherrmann9635

      First I intended to leave a similar comment. But then I thought: would I have the Apply Image feature still in my memory the next time I wish to create a luminance mask? And the answer unfortunately is "no"... So of course in PS we can reach a result on 100 different ways, but the more often we hear about those different methodologies the more we get used to them and can benefit from them when useful. Thanks, Aaron!

    • @andrydeniwardhana3028
      @andrydeniwardhana3028 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      exactly. But, when we use shadow/highlight tool, how we bring up the saturation on shadow layer?

    • @marcherrmann9635
      @marcherrmann9635 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suggest to add a vibrance layer and limit its effect by applying a blend-if to the light areas of the underlying layers. Doing so will moreover provide automatic adaptation to future changes in the layer modified with the shadow/highlight tool, whereas a fixed luminance will not do that. In other words: the image areas being affected by the vibrance increase vary in case of blend-if as opposed to when using a fixed mask.
