I used to watch this series and found it hilarious. All the characters were so funny, especially Windsor Davis as Sergeant Major Shut Up. The Bearer, the Chai Wallah and the Punkah Wallah were also very amusing.
Oh my goodness!!! I was thinking of this show the other day and wondered if some hero had posted it on TH-cam. I married an Englishman in 1974 and lived in Portsmouth. This was one of my favorite shows! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
147hobson Me too. I love David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd's WWII series. Plus their Are you being Served? and Open All Hours. Timeless and hilarious classics, were very clever.
I can’t believe that’s Michael Bates! I aways figured him for a one-dimensional actor. Boy, wuz I wrong! And Windsor Davies is one of my all-time fav actors. Never saw this series before. He’s every bit as funny here as in Never The Twain.
Michael Bates was actually Anglo Indian and interestingly in real life had out ranked most of the characters in the show having served with the Brigade of Gurkhas as a major in Burma.
The big show after Dad’s Army. It was nearly as good. Great memories. Now India owns most of Britain - and Britain is to an ever larger degree Indian. Something happened in the 5 decades in between.
Lol! I've actually eaten curried crocodile... For a while there was an Indian restaurant here in Adelaide that had it on the menu. It wasn't bad either... Tastes a bit like chicken, but a bit dry and stringy. I don't think that restaurant is still going though... that was a long time ago! The crocs, of course were sourced from the north of Australia... Not sure if that's still available either.
When in the Army as a Bandsman we had a Drum Major like this bloke. He would never have understood the humour of this Show. It's almost too real to be funny. Military mentality !!!
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view!" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?" th-cam.com/video/POO4lrTclNY/w-d-xo.html
By 1943 the British army issued the Jungle or Tropical kit that included the Australian style slouch hat and green tropical weight battle dress. Much better than the sand colored khaki shorts and pith helmets.
@@MrReded69 thanks for the information still a surprise only seen slouch hats wore by british on this show never in actual war time photos but then again i could be wrong cheers
@@tonyde6423 My father wore one, he was in the RAF, Middle East. For good measure, they also were issued the sheepskin waistcoats because 'it can get cold in the desert'.
The slouch hat was introduced by Robert Baden Powell doing his uniform tests around the Boer War. He saw how useful the cowboy hat was, and British and Australian Scouts all wore a remolded slouch model in my young day.
Those were the days...good humor year 2019 is animated idiotic playmobile puppets and imaginary insane alien monsters. All fake, all artificial. Human race goes down...
With the political correctness, bullshit shows like this can never be made again I'm so lucky that I was born in the late forties and have seen them all.
I can’t believe it’s been fifty years already since I saw this show. Sweet memories.
Me too. But I still remembered the words! 😊
Jup...65 now !!! tempus fugit
Brings back cosy memories of us as a family sitting down to watch this, good times

Brilliant series such a medley of characters, good humour at it's best
I used to watch this series and found it hilarious. All the characters were so funny, especially Windsor Davis as Sergeant Major Shut Up. The Bearer, the Chai Wallah and the Punkah Wallah were also very amusing.

Jane Howard you are welcome madam.
The creators, Perry and Croft, declared they believed this was the very best of all the shows they produced. I'd have to agree!
Bloody hell. That has aged well. I was not expecting it to.
The best show ever the Parts they play each and every one of them are great 🥰🥰
Brilliant. It ain't half hot mum at it's best & so funny.
it was all in fun ,no shows like this now in shitty 2020
Yup
Watching in even shitier 2024.
I loved Windsor Davis's (Sar Major) voice and the way he yelled out "move yourself, MOVE YOURSELF"
Fantastic sir.
Beathifull times where that every time i see this, it remembers me of those Beathifull years.
Windsor Davis a legend
And still with us.
He just died
Good show old Bean! Classic!
The best, they don't produce comedy like this anymore.
loved this show and the indian guy is named Michael Bates and that is my name
When you think tropic thunder is hard, but find this 😅😂😅😂
This gem and Mind Your Language are my favourite shows with the brilliant British humour.
My wife loves “mind your language”.

I think I'm in love with the punka wallah ❤❤❤

Not for the top few percent. They still have the main wealth from those days, especially the royals

I tried It bbq and found the taste fishy with a very soft texture. Probably better in a curry though
Sergeant major shut up is hilarious
I’d heard of this show, but never seen it. Looks good, but I’m still bummed that Michael Bates left LotSW for this. I really liked him as Blamire.
Fall out everyone but lofty!
Windsor Davis vs Brian Blessed in a ..."SHUT UP"shouting competition!
Brian wins , just!
I don’t think earth could hold together if those two let loose.
Oh nooooo the earth will cause a massive earthquake lol
‘That’s rotten luck in’it!!’ Lol

Yes there waz a few Glorias you right
Michel Bates great impression of Spike Milligan
Did a wonderful Field Marshal Montgomery in the movie "Patton" took me years to realize it was the same actor.
Oh dear, how sad, never mind!
Standard four camp a group of kiwi kids used to do impressions of good old sargert major
Huh?
Please you are all enjoying the series!
