One of my great grandfathers (the other three served in the war) was too old to serve in the Second World War, so he joined the Home Guard in 1941. Before that he worked as a volunteer firefighter during the Blitz in London. My great grandfather was also a foreman at the Dagenham Ford Factory, so he was working in an essential industry when he wasn't volunteering. My great grandfather was able to serve in the last year of the First World War however, he joined the Royal Navy when he was 16 and put into the Home Fleet. He never saw action, first his ship went submarine hunting multiple times but never found any, second my grandfather worked in the engine room. My great grandfather's older brother was killed during the First World War after his ship struck a mine and sank (my great grandfather's older brother was one of the 74 sailors killed when HMS Ghurka hit a mine in the English Channel in February 1917), and his younger brother was to young to serve and during World War II he was also too old to fight, but the younger brother worked as a crane operator at the dock yards and also joined the Home Guard. My great grandfather served for 5 years in the Royal Navy with the Home Fleet, before returning home and finding work with the Ford Company. He worked his way up to foreman and the experience he gained working in the engine room of a ship helped him at the Ford factory. I never met him, as he died before I was born, but my dad has told me stories about him. I've often wondered if my great grandfather's or his younger brother's experiences in the Home Guard were anything like this show portrays. I know its a comedy and just a show, but there must be some grains of truth in it.

Interesting to note , Philip Mardoc appeared in the 1965 film "Operation Crossbow " with George Peppard and Jeremy Kempf . Philip played a Gehamstat polizi officer , as always Philip was an excellent actor. I believe that he had a daughter whom became an actress . Regrettably , Philip has since passed away , he was a gifted and talented man. Equally capable of performing in comedy and in dramatic roles........

Ahoy! The Spoons are awake! .........Ahoy! The Spoons are Awake , you are absolutely right , a superb film and I feel also being underrated and somewhat forgotten . It's interesting also that Sophia Loren got top billing when this film was released in the theater's , of course never mind that Carlo Ponti was Sophie's husband and the Producer of this film. In addition , Carlo didn't believe that George Peppard was an established enough star to head the cast list . Well , that is a matter of opinion , as George was a fantastic performer and craftsman of the profession . thanks for your comment regarding my post .........

I remember watching a documentary on BBC2 a few yrs back on the Indian tiger. It was narrated by someone who I thought was from Wales, possibly Madoc. I watched it for about 40 odd minutes wondering which Welsh actor it could be when the narrator suddenly appeared on screen. A huge bearded Indian man :D
