Authenticity is vital to Perry, who remembers the time he was at Rada, rehearsing with fellow actors, when a secret onlooker turned out to be George Bernard Shaw. “He said, ‘I enjoyed your show tremendously. I laughed a lot. But you’ve got to understand one rule of comedy: you must have reality, otherwise it’s rubbish.’” In any case, thanks to its successful repeats Dad’s Army is guaranteed immortality. But to what does Perry attribute our enduring love of Captain Mainwaring and co? “It’s because we reminded the British people of their finest hour. It had wobbly back projection and cardboard scenery, but also the truth… and great artists that brought it to life.”
Simon Blackwell ‘To create comedy that generations of people genuinely love is rare, and he managed it time and again’. Perry’s work on the show - along with that of the producer, David Croft - created one of the most popular British television programmes of all time’.
Jack Dee ‘Amazing contribution to British telly. Watched Dad's Army only yesterday. Still as funny as when I watched it as a kid.’
Vicki Michelle ‘a brilliant comedy writer & true gentleman. He leaves us such a legacy’
Ian Lavender ‘Jimmy, he has been a part of my life for such a long time. ‘He was half of one amazing partnership, it brings back so many wonderful memories… lots of good times together with much laughter…’
David Schneider ‘Thanks to Jimmy Perry for the sublime Dad’s Army, the perfect sitcom, and for making me laugh for over 40 years.’
Shane Allen, BBC controller of comedy commissioning, said: ‘Jimmy Perry is a Goliath of British comedy writing. His work will be enjoyed and appreciated for many years to come’.
Miranda Hart ‘Thank you Jimmy Perry. You made our world a funnier and brighter place.’
Nigel Farage tweeted: Jimmy Perry created and co-wrote the fantastic Dad's Army, my favourite comedy of all time.'
Tom Watson 'We grew up laughing at Jimmy Perry's hilarious characters. One of our greatest TV writers who will not be forgotten.'
Ruth Madoc ‘Being on set was quite hard work, but great fun. We weren’t allowed to laugh. One particular series we’d been naughty giggling on set. This didn’t go down very well with David and Jimmy, so they made us T-shirts saying, ‘Comedy is a serious business’. We were told in no uncertain terms’.
Frank Williams “Dad’s Army was one of the happiest periods of my life, it was a wonderful role to work on.”
TV comedy producer Jon Plowman said, “The quality of his work was consistently brilliant”, adding that Jimmy and his co-writer David Croft came as a package. He described them as “comedy revolutionaries”, saying, “They made it look easy; we know it is not.”
Chris Jarvis ‘this sitcoms are pure gold & will live on.’
Jeffrey Holland ‘There is no doubt that he and David created some of the most memorable and iconic characters and moments in television sitcom history and as such, has left us with a wonderful legacy we can look back on for many years to come. I am proud to have been a part of so many of his series’.
Mark Braxton ‘There is a light that never goes out - and its name is Jimmy Perry’
Perry admits to being bowled over by the continuing success of his Home Guard comedy: “Isn’t it amazing? Let me tell you, I’m overwhelmed.”
Appointed an OBE in 1978, Jimmy Perry published his autobiography, A Stupid Boy, in 2002 and received a British Comedy award for lifetime achievement in 2003.

I've lost count the number of times I've watched this .. No matter. Whatever's going on in your life, if you're feeling low watch this and you WILL feel better. It's a promise.
I rotate between Dad's Army, it ain't half hot Mum and Mc Hales Navy...been doing it every night for about the last 7 years...a couple of episodes at dinner
Absolutely agree.
Gosh, I've watched all these episodes multiple times. They're like old friends.
Best British comedy ever-

George,
Bedankt-Thanks yet again for this very funny episode with Capt. Mainwaring & Co. and the runaway balloon!
Godfrey and his sister are so sweet in this episode. Very funny story!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂I still can’t talk after all these years of watching 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have been watching Dad's Army since they were broadcast in Belgium via Dutch TV channels. I fell in love with it right there and then and havent stopped watching it since. I own the DVD set, which I update when another one (even with one new bit added) comes out, en still watch the re-runs on Auntie Beeb religiously. Have been doing so for over 40 years now. I am also a wargamer and play the 28mm Bolt Action "Beer and Pretzels" wargaming system with (among others) a Home Guard reinforced platoon containing the characters from the series, which are beautifuly painted by hand, both in their battledres and in their civies. I even wrote rules for the Walmington-on-Sea extras like Mrs. Pike and Fox, Mr. Bluett, the Vicar and the Verger (calling them British Nuiscances) and of course, the ARP Warden is also included in my list of characters (Someone has to get wet, don't they). I can proudly say that I have yet to lose a battle because of the shenanigans the special rules allow the characters get up to.
Captain Mainwaring may not survive the likes of Mrs. Pike, Elizabeth , the action of his platoon and the shenanigans of various members of the town before the Germans attack !
I've watched this at least a dozen times and I still laugh at the cows every time.
Absolutely Brilliant !!!!!
Cleverly constructed episode. The saluting motif - which we've forgotten about - resurfaces at the end with good effect . . .
This series is one of the best ever of British comedy. Belly laughs every time I see Dad's Army.
Amy wonderful Amy…..how can you blame me for loving you…🤣🤣🤣
Comedy was alive then 😢
Always nice to watch this.
Think I've watched nearly all of them now, and haven't enjoyed anything this much in ages. It was a highlight of the week in my youth, and seems even better now. Thanks for sharing these gems.
It definitely brings back fond memories of my childhood, watching these old Brit Coms with my Mum and Dad.
Not just hilarious, but with pills of education wrapped in the jam of mirth - hearken to the scene in one episode where Corporal Jones is dealing out the meat supplies for the housewives of Walmington-On-Sea; it's both a funny interlude, and a touch reminder how ordinary folk in Britain endured years of shortages of things we take for granted.
A episode where Lance Corporal Jones does not mention Lord Kitchener. Classic comedy.
This show might have still been a hit , we'll never know now...with or with out Clive Dunn, but I think he is the gem in the show.
I'd like to find more shows with him in it.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Dunn#Television_roles
Here is a list his performances. Perhaps you can find some on YT
This show is just timeless !
One of the best episodes.
I love it when at 22.49-22.50 a hand comes into view right beside a dangling Capt Mainwaring. Just great special effects.
The old guy in the slipper. was a real hero , He was wounded in hand to hand combat, also took a bayonet to the groin
So what you're trying to say is that he's no longer an adventurer?
And he was shot..
"LONGEST WAY UP wiggle wiggle...….." FUNNY episode!! Love "Wonderful Amy" track too!!
I always laugh watching this show. It's brilliant
Yup
Still funny, even after all these years.

My favourite episode
That Scene with the Train was a re-used one from Ealings Comedy "The Titfield Thunderbolt"!
I love this show
"well yellow market activities then"
If they would make that joke now the entire media would be upside down.
It is ashamed that we have allowed a small minority to dictate what we can and can't say . It boils down to what offense them .
That was hilarious.
Thanks.
25:57 applause.... how quaint !
great episode
@ 11:18 the father is mouthing her lines...lol
Well spotted.
Geweldig! Bedankt voor de upload!

Great, funny and lovely
I dont even need to watch this vid to give it a like. By definition it gets one. Evem IF it might be the "worst" episode out of the whole series, its still a LIKE.
It looks like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade came to Walmington-on-the-Sea.

Ruddy hooligans
Longest way up shortest way down whoop
swear i saw the hand of a crew member from the side in one of the scenes where mainwaring is on the balloon
because they are all show in front of a live audience for the laugh track, you can hear people saying all sorts of rude and funny shit in the viewing crowed.
20:26 captain mainwaring screaming
Oh shit, I'm crying
Great
The cows.
24:32 - LOL, was that Monsieur Leclerc?
Not now, onion seller!
They should have made Private Sponge a Lance Corporal as he seems to be in charge of the other section which wasn't L Cpl Jones's.......I guess there wasn't enough time for more comedy.
I agree, as there were three sections in the platoon. Lance corporal Jones commanded the first section, while private Sponge seemed to command the other 2 sections.
Wriggle, wriggle, wriggle.
Hilarious funny
Wiggle, wiggle. Wiggle!
Great series, youth sentiment
Holy pre cgi days greenscreen batman. Still a fantastic episode though.
I speak both fluent English and Dutch .. But even I Have a hard time to keep up with the Dutch Sups Hahaha
I've spent the last few year 'collecting' all this old stuff , one day this will all be deleted because of 'Puritan' Laws. The very best of British comedy here.
how can it be collected..?
@@hanoitripper1809 You need to obtain programs off the Web that can copy such materials. As this subject matter is Taboo you'll have to research this yourself.
THANK YOU! THESE SHOWS ARE TREASURES. Yes, they will want to cancel them, because they reveal the power of the COHESIVE community....now under lethal assault around the world - and not from "Puritan" laws, but something far more deadly...sorry to bring a heavy note, but feel it's vital to protect and maintain our great heritage. These were our "elders" and heroes from my English childhood and they earned our love, respect and cherishing...
@@hanoitripper1809buy the dvd box set !
They never let us know what was written on the harmonium´, nor who wrote it.
I often wonder that too.
Keeps us guessing…… until forever…..
I love this but it has to be said, Capt M could have just dropped off in the haystack !
True, but he didn't want to lose the balloon.
23:40 it is I leclerc
Good lick.....
Do you mean recently sir
I bet those cows were thinking: “And we let idiots like these milk us twice a day…”
Classic 🖤💛❤️🇦🇺👍😅😅😂

Ruddy hooligans! What do you think you're playing at? Cowboys and Indians?
