A very thin coat of sawdust onto that gluing surface works wonders.. tighter bond and keeps the boards from slipping as their being pressed. Little tips. Great video thanks.
Cool project. It may just fit the bill of my current situation of not having a real woodworking bench to use. I'm not making any large project right now and the compact size will really come in handy. My only challenge is that I'll have to do all the work with hand tools. Thanks for posting.

All the boards were free of any twist. I'd have sorted that before gluing up if there was any, but yeah, always something to be avoided :) Thanks for watching!
Yeah man, that's how I roll too! I cruise my 'hood doing Asset Recovery Sweeps and get most of my timber and sheet goods, amazing what quality stock people kick to the curb, here in Florida, after the hurricane season lots of good quality ply goes out front, I've even scored some nice birch ply that way too (you'll buy anything at any price during a storm threat and you're too late to the party at the home center and $60 a sheet ply is your only option ☺). I really like the imported futons the best though, the fasteners are usually high quality and if carefully removed are quite reusable, and the hardwoods used are some kind of Asian Mahogany, very nice K. D. stuff indeed.
I noticed how many times you had to start and flip and finish a cut on your table saw using the sled. I also noticed that the sled has a ~1" thick base. If you remade your sled with a thinner base, you would gain a lot of usable blade height.
+Sunshine_Shooter Hey Shooter. Thanks for the comments. The sled is 18mm MDF so making a thinner base would have helped but not just for this one project. It does need a wing extension though, so next time I'm rebuilding the sled, I can improve :-)
Paul, I noticed that too and I was doing a thought experiment with an L-shaped sclice of wood, same guage as the kerf, to slot in the first cut in the wood and the gap in the sled, to line them up. Just a thought. Cheers from England.

I certainly don't have multi-thousands of dollars/pounds of tools (kind of wish I did!). It was an inspired workbench addition, not a "simple project anyone can make with basic hand tools". It could have been made with hand tools for sure, but that wasn't what I wanted to do. Thanks for watching!

Hello! First, let me just clarify one thing, I'm not American or in America :) I work out of my garage, from which I started with just hand tools. Yes, I have some non-pro tools now, but there's no reason you can't build this with hand saws, hand planes and chisels and a hand drill. It will be lots of work, but I see no reason why if you want a mini-workbench, you can't make it with what you have? The reason I made a mini-workbench is ... because I needed one. Myself I don’t have a spare room or even room for a sturdy table. I have some hand tools but anything that needs to be sawed or thicknessed with any level of precition, is difficult. But in this woodworkers defense, he didn’t call the video a «simple DIY» item that you can build out of scrap for free like so many others do. And there is a lot of good thinking behind this project as well as a clear command of all of those tools. I enjoy watching. I think I’m gonna watch part 2 as well. :)

Nice build, but horrible sound. When there is no narrative and only sped up sounds from tools, it would be alot more enjoyable to watch, you had just added some music instead. :)

I assume you mean the router plane? It's the manual version of an electric router. Rather than a rotating cutting edge, it's like a chisel. Great to use when you want more control cleaning up a surface or awkward joint.
@@Pinoyphilly Veritas & Lee Valley Tools sell them along with Shop Fox (Grizzly Industrial). I’ve got a Shop Fox router plane that I really like but, like pretty much any new plane, I had to put in some “sweat equity” to sharpen the blade to peak performance!

I cut through the cable with my hand held router last week.
I did it with the circular saw too, thank god grandpa was an electrician and that's the first thing I learned to do as a kid. Always comes in handy.

Isn’t salt used as grit? Then it dissolves in the water content of the glue?

Holy shit! A saw noise is a sound I enjoy, oddly enough. Speed the sound up and it's definitely listed in the Geneva convention under torture!
Only worsened by that brain drilling sound of the sped up jointer!

why is your planer guard completely open?? It stated close to the piece but it was obvious you did not tighten and it just worked loose!

6:28 Are you using the jointer in lieu of a thickness planer?
Used the jointer to flatten and square one face and edge. Then thicknessed it. The glue up didn't leave a flat face to work from. Thanks for watching
