Petula Clark is such a tremendous talent. Her hit songs remain fresh and exciting decades later. She deserved a bigger film career. It was not to be. She was superb in "Goodbye, Mr. Chips". The film was excellent but died at the box office. She was also good in "Finians Rainbow" but that film was a terrible miscalculated mess of a movie. Film musicals died a terrible death in the late 1960s. The Sound of Music defied gravity and ran years raking in mega-millions. Every studio began making musicals in an attempt to cash in. Oliver and Funny Girl were smashing hits. All the other musicals were dead on arrival and nearly sank the studios that made them. Petula became a terrific musical leading lady on Broadway and the West End in addition to performing as a solo artist and she's still sounding great and going strong.
If you did a search for Petula Clark's singles this probbaly wouldn't be one of the first you searched for.....however......this superb piece of 60s melodic pop just gently rolls along like a Summer breeze with clear distinct vocals, subtle key change and a simplistic but so so catchy arrangement from Mr Hatch.
Glenn Gould, the celebrated Canadian classical music genius, described 'chasing' this song as he listened to a series of radio broadcasts on a long car journey. It is fair to say he saw something in it more profound than the usual pop stuff.
