Mrs. Crawley definitely made the Countess a better person. Love their relationship.
I think they both made each other better persons.
Isabelle pulled Violet into the future and Violet reminded her to look back once in a while.

Naw, I think she was always nice but just super defensive (and therefore arrogant and superior). They did though bring out some of each other's qualities, good and irritating.
Mr Molesley looked proud as a punch with his roses. Its so adorable to look at.
My eyes tear up every time at the look on Mr. Molesley's face when he wins. So sweet.

I will always love how casually Mrs. Crawley responds when Lady Grantham says she thought she was being told off about the hospital. "no its the flower show" no denial or hesitation whatsoever. lmao
The Dodwager really believed she had won all those years, her roses were certainly grand! But when it was brought to her attention by Isobel and Robert that it was not the case, Violet responded like the true lady she is!

She is a gem. People usually don't change their attitudes at her age. But she always surprise us.
The dowager seemed to be the best qualities of "the past" embodied, like suddenly all vestiges of the great virtues in Edwardian era gave birth to a lady: steadfast yet ever so loyal to her family, stoic and quick-witted yet doesn't really lack compassion, and so wise she was the binding force of Downton Abbey.

Poor old Mr Molesley looks like he'd rather not discuss it and just bear not winning than suffer Violet's wrath.
I love how its not that Violet rigged the contest, its that she truly believes her (gardener's) roses are superior and when she sees that she won again she's like 'omg she was right'. And of course wanted to prove her wrong without seeming so
I love how Violet took off her glasses and took a peek at the winner as if to have plausible deniability that she read it 'wrong'.
I love how this is basically High School Musical 2 when Sharpay announces her brother won the talent contest instead of her where she definitely ALWAYS wins because she deigns it to be

I am convinced that Lady Violet believed in winning such things on merit and not on the back of mere rank. You can hear it in the scornful way that she disparages Mrs Crawley's opinion of the matter, but upon realizing it to be true, she very quietly stays within her opinion of meritocracy and awards the award to the most deserving, though doubtless at some expense to her pride. However, she very quickly corrects her own mindset and at first reluctantly but quickly with true and genuine enthusiasm congratulates Mr. Mostly. By the time her son and daughter-in-law speak of it mere seconds later, she is as pleased with the outcome as if it had been the genuine results as decided by the judges.
It is fascinating to see that for all of her pride in her station and its authority, she is actually rather humble and occasionally self-effacing in her own way though one must look closely for the moments as they are easily missed.
Part of it is because even though her gardener's flowers (without any real personal involvement or effort from her) lost this year, she's won as the better person.
Very Mrs. Miniverish. I laughed so much at the exchanges between The dowager and Isobel. Hilarious. Thanks for these clips they are really lovely vignettes.

This scene was actually inspired by an almost-identical scene in the 1942 film ‘Mrs. Miniver,’ a poignant World War II drama with Dame May Whitty and Henry Travers portraying the roles filled here by Violet and Molesley’s father.
Absolutely stolen.
This was the first tell-tale sign in the series (S1 E4?) that the Dowager Countess is at heart a good and empathetic person. That wasn't apparent in the first three episodes.
That was very sweet of her letting him win
She didn’t let him win: she didn’t let the judges rob someone of their rightful victory. She finally realized that fairness was not associated with her name.
@@bigrivtodagled8210 I think you quible over word usage. But it's part of her story arc, that where she sees wrong done (even if it has to be pushed right in front of her nose, as you say), she rights it.
I was watching "Mrs. Miniver" last night, and this storyline came to mind.....

This is from the first season, and it's one of the first indications that the Dowager is obstinate and traditional, yes, but she's also quite capable of changing her mind. At first she's offended by Isobel's assertion and dismisses her because they've had so many disagreements already, but thus far they've been matters of opinion with Isobel being largely ignored because of her lower social status and weight of tradition in the Downton household. However, when Robert unwittingly agrees with Isobel--without even knowing about their discussion!--the Dowager realizes Isobel has a strong case, which is confirmed when she sees that she won again. Then the real shining star of her character emerges: she doesn't ignore it. She acknowledges it and takes what she feels is the correct and honorable course of action in this new light. It's one of the first times we glimpse that side of her character, the first of many as it turns out, as we found out to our delight over the years.
I think this is also one of the first indications that while the Dowager enjoys the privileges of her station, she also believes that they're not to be automatically or ostentatiously granted. They need to be earned, in one way or another, and thus we see where Robert inherited his sense of responsibility to the tenants and residents under his jurisdiction.
In prep for A New Era, I recently restarted the series from season one. I’ve just wrapped season 3…. I forgot what a WALLUP of a season it was. “Don’t leave me love”. I can’t 😭

I remember this scene although gosh, it seems forever since I've seen the show. It actually brought tears to my eye.
This series is one of the best i have ever seen. This was a great piece.
I like that everyone around the Dowager Countess helped her be that little bit more human when it counted.

As an Asian, I have to admit beauty of British class and culture. Offcourse it’s not seen across all social classes but still the culture and class of British is something the world looks upto. Also very well represented in this beautiful masterpiece of Downton Abbey
One of my favourite episode.
This was lifted from the plot of the film " Mrs Miniver". A 1940s Oscar winner starring Greer Garson.
I had never seen this portion of Downton Abbey but it reminds me of the rose judging in the movie "Mrs Miniver" where the village matriarch always won the competition until she gave her blessing for someone else to win.
Mrs. Miniver, the classic movie starring Grear Garson, featured this exact story line.
And that's why she was The Boss.
Copy of Mrs Miniver when the Station Master Mr Ballard (Henry Travers) called the rose the 'Miniver Rose.' I really upset my sister when I mentioned this. She loved watching this series, and she also loved watching with our Mum.
The Dowager's gardener did all the hard work.
Lady Violet is surely a combat master.
The earlier seasons really were better than the later. The acting was natural and everything felt real, unlike later when it became needlessly soapy and hammey.

No matter if the storyline was from ' Mrs. Miniver' it was perfect in this series also... and how many times has that kind of kowtowing happened over the ages? Far too often merit is set aside for sucking up to status.

The countess did a brave, wise and very kindly thing to Mr. Molesley. He is and old man and she wisely realised that the judges had been blinded by her status and influence. She also realised Mr Molesley red roses far surpassed anything else o. Show. She ofcourse had the ruin with her cousin who pointed out some obvious flaws in the system.

Watched "Mrs Miniver" for the first time last week. I'm kind of disappointed in Downton Abbey for (apparently) lifting this little storyline out of whole cloth from that movie. Wish they'd have given some kind of credit, as it's a very good story.

It is entirely possible she won every single year based on merit and winning this year was good enough for her so she let Mr.Mosley have it just to reward his years of hard work.

To be even more fair, it was lifted from the FILM Mrs. Miniver, not from the original brilliant essays of Jan Struther.
She's like a spoiled child were the parents bribe the judge to let their child win all the time to get the trophy every year and feel insulted every time someone else gets more attention. Lucky she turned around at the end thanks to mrs crawley 🙂
