Warming Up with Bryson DeChambeau

  • Bryson DeChambeau plays golf differently. He thinks about golf differently. And he preps for golf differently. In this episode of Warming Up Bryson explains why he “almost never” plays golf at home, how he calibrates his irons pre-round, why it’s useful to practice with your eyes closed, why he always hits a draw and more. He hits a whiff, a top, a clank and a lot of very high, straight far golf shots - basically he shows off the entire arsenal. We had a blast filming this one, so we hope you like it too!
We filmed this earlier in the season, well before Bryson’s U.S. Open victory, which is why there’s no reference to his win.

I am amazed at his mantra adaptation as in "I don't focus on the ball" hitting sequence. He repeats and flows, much like a Buddhist monk to control his consciousness near meditation levels. His breathing sequence and when to strike is another meditative approach. This is like the keys into opening up a door to a "zone" head space. No wonder BD feeds on the crowd's energy in a big tournament. Other pros focus on the ball striking, path, and tempo during play, but do not get the mind in the right frame. Bryson should be commended for his skill set and not be influenced by teaching pros latest fixes. I look forward to his entertaining approach to the game in the future. Moe Norman would be proud of Bryson, RIP.

Funny how he opens with focusing on the motion and not so much the ball. Last night I was practicing with my 56. Flops, chipping, 50yds and full shots. Anyway when I got to my full shots I really wanted to focus on my form and getting the most out of the club. In doing so I was making the best contact probably ever and effortlessly hitting 100yds with a beautiful flight. Can’t wait to get to the range and try it with my irons. Got into a weird slump where nothing I did felt natural or comfortable and focusing on just my body last night, got me in the right place. Love this game, but it can mess with your brain in an instant, but that’s what always drives me to practice

I’d like to note that his de lofted clubs isn’t just because of how high it would go, but even if he had a small variation in spin with a wedge, it could change the distance by 10 yards even though he hit the shot almost the same as most of his other shots. This is also why he rarely swings hard with a lob wedge.

Bryson, please help golf club manufacturers move away from numbered irons (PW, 9 iron, 8 iron, etc.) and move towards degrees (45, 40, 35, etc.). It's commonly done for wedges so why not irons? It would help the industry move past the "loft jacking" conversation and just label clubs for what they really are.

He hits them really high with the long one lengths and ball speed so usually not an issue. He did miss a few greens in the U.S. open because of the draw when the pin was in the back. I play one lengths as well and they go really high and straight down almost until you get to the 5 iron and it's a detriment because it's a little shorter club and I'm not B.D. speed lol.

That's because the loft jack doesn't make sense because you play same length irons. So You say a 45 degree pitching wedge flies too high and spins too much, so you label it a gap wedge, but it's literally still spinning and flying the same regardless of what you stamp on the sole of the club. But because you now call it a gap wedge it's a good flight, but if you call it a PW it's a bad flight. Literally makes no sense the ball doesn't care what name you give the club.

Why is he not representing us in Paris? Who are four players that have had a better season than him?

I thought he was joking the first time he said he doesnt play golf to practice. That is psycho and awesome at the exact same time.

    6:21 Isn’t he just hitting 45 degree wedge…? I don’t get this part

basically he adjusts his clubs' loft on yardage and spin so he has correct spacing. Most of his clubs are a lot stronger than conventional because his swing speed with normal lofts leads to a shot with too much spin and peak height which is very inconsistent on course due to wind etc (low margin of error).
His 'pitching wedge' for example, is simply the 10th (or so) club in his bag but has a similar loft to an 8 iron.

@@freddie_connor9202 yes I know that. What I am saying is he literally said he wouldn’t be able to control if he had 45 degree pitching wedge because it will go way too high and too spinny. So he has 40 degree loft pitching wedge so he would have lower ball flight with around 10000 rpm.
That’s good. But then he literally has 45 degree wedge which he would not call a pitching wedge but for most people it is. And he said earlier, he wouldn’t be able to control if he had pitching wedge of 45 degree but he is using a 45 degree wedge. How does he control that club?

@@성요한-c3oyeah it makes zero sense especially considering he plays same length irons. He's basically saying if he hits a 45 degree club it spins too much, but if he calls it a gap wedge instead of a pitching wedge, now it magically is ok, even though the ball is literally doing the exact same thing as before 🤣

@@kourt2469 exactly my point. You can call 45 degree wedge whatever you want but the club will do the same thing. He cannot control 45 degree pitching wedge but he can control 45 gap wedge? Makes no sense to me
