GWM P-Series (Cannon/Poer) Review / Can it blast Hilux dominance?

- We review the high tech Great Wall Motors GWM P-Series bakkie (120 kW / 400 Nm), which mixes affordability and luxury in a compelling package - which will be challenging the best that Toyota, Ford, Mitsubishi, VW and Isuzu have to offer. In the form of the Hilux, Ranger and D-max, while not forgetting about the Triton, Amarok and Karoo.
At on R550 000 for the 2 litre diesel full spec model, with an 8-Speed ZF transmission, radar cruise control, heated seats, collision sensors to name a few, is nearly 300k cheaper than a top Hilux.
Could we be seeing a changing of the guard in the ultra-competitive pick-up segment, which accounts for a large proportion of overall sales?
Only on Africa Sideways.

Chinese are bringing interesting vehicles, but they need time to beat the well known big names. Competition is good for the consumer.
For sure, competition is King.
you are 100% right...
Best looking bakkie by far ! And that front Grille on the P Series Passenger version is absolutely awesome! Thanks for a great review ! My Beast LT 4X4 is the best ( and in blue it just looks the part )
Only a pleasure, looks the part.
Oí 7pm
My beast is a 4 x2 ,it licked Namibia desert effortlessly
Hi, enjoyed your review, I am in Australia and have ordered a Cannon, hope to have in a month or so, I was very impressed with what you get for the price. We are getting a 7 year warranty at the moment with a 5 year cap price servicing etc.
Interesting to see how it maintains long term.
This feels like a real world test and it seems better than the rest. If you are only allowed 120 km/h this diesel is fine and fuel efficient.
So far so good.
Get real it's definitely one of the worst gutless garbage 🗑 😄
to be honest,i really fell inlove with this pickup but i am just waiting for a bigger engine with more torque and more kw i mean this pickup is stunnin, and i promise you in upcoming 2 or 3 yeas or even next year
,this pickup is going to be one of the best utes,i promise you all.Well thanks to GWM
Indeed, the bigger engine option will sell like hotcakes.
Cheap price and luxury at the same time with 5 year bumper 2 bumper warranty? How can you ask for more?
5 year 100 000km, it does bring a lot to the table if you like a high tech bakkie.
Pick my one up (Cannon X) next week. Not a huge fan of the CCCP but the price and value are overwhelming. Any suggestions of whether you can fit bilstein shocks would be appreciated?
Cool, interesting to see how it's going in 5-10 years. Yes, you can upgrade the shocks.
@@Africasideways Seven year unlimted km warranty in Australia. In two years my kids can drive it to school. 100% tax write of for business this year....No doubt the steed was a dog...your right that it is a risk but I think this brand is here to stay..
Hansome ute looks like americen ute👍
by looks only
Nice review. This bakkie is worth checking out.
Thanks Rushdi, worth a look.
It's junk it would be last on my list along with the rest of the cheap rubbish 😄😄😄
Fair cop John Boy, long term maintenance....
Good looking Bakkie but the badge is crap
beauty is in the eye of the beer holder
The badge covers a very high tech radar and senor set for the adaptive cruise control, the collision and pedestrian avoidance system , traffic sign recognition, and lane guidance system. its not just cosmetic.
@garylongshaw1299 ohk,I wasn't aware, thanks
Proper review ,thanks!
This car bakkie has such a presence in person, really competing with the top boys out there
Thanks boet, ja, it has presence on the road.
can u get the new haval h6 super lux?
Ja, hoping to get the H6 soon.
best P series review I've seen so far.
Thanks.
The vehicle has a 7 year unlimited km warranty in Australia.
Nice.
Not bad at all, good to get some more depth in the local bakkie offerings.
For sure R1!
gwm....Chinese shit box
italian cars are much more reliable
There is a v6 twin turbo petrol
Thanks for the heads up, I see they're working on the V6 as we speak.
just hit the subscribe button, ladies and gentlemen
Thank you. Keep em peeled.
Why is your camera so unstable?
Ja, I was using my phone for that car, had lost the proper camera the week before, fell off the car.
@@Africasideways sorry about the loss of your camera.
I liked the review, it speaks to the average consumer stuck at crossroads
Thanks
The kw?
Torque?
Is it a torque converter?
How many gears?
Great video man🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👌
120 kW and 400 Nm of torque, 8 speed ZF. Thanks Fuz,
It appears the majority of South African have welcomed the GWM ute with open arms and open mind. In my country Australia it’s a political issue with Chinese made cars, half people just hate it because it’s chinese. Aussie people are really patriotic even though we are a multicultural society. I have not yet seen a negative comment about the p series in your country on TH-cam however if you check out GWM Cannon (that’s what we call it in Australia) on TH-cam you will see many many hate comments! I admire you guys openness!
Thanks Mr President, seeing a lot of them on the road here. Long term reliability tbc. The Aussie Chinese relations are strained by all accounts.
Lol selective patriotism, EVERYTHING in Australia is basically made in China, the economy pretty much propped up by Chinese money lol
Who is the manufacturer of the p series 2.0l engine
Info hard to find, but it appears to be a tweaked Toyota engine.
@@Africasideways Not so. It's an in house developed GWM engine
Any more info Jaco? I saw the petrol was in-house, but no mention of the diesel.
@@Africasideways I'll see if I can find the original article from Aus I read it on and the question was previously asked on the SA p-series owners group on Facebook, which was confirmed by the DP of Haval Silver Lakes where I bought my p-series 😉 best car I've had, and I upgraded from a Volvo
Thanks for the info, are they working on a bigger diesel offering in the future? Volvo.... not known for their reliability.
This is what bakkies should've been. A value packed tool to do the job without costing a spleen. Toyotas and Ford has been chalked up more as a status symbol
Hard to beat on price.
Please do a comparison between Mahindra Karoo S11 4x4 vs GWM P Series 4x4 LT
good idea
They are all gutless unrefined polluting junk 😁
