GWM P-Series (Cannon/Poer) Review / Can it blast Hilux dominance?

  • We review the high tech Great Wall Motors GWM P-Series bakkie (120 kW / 400 Nm), which mixes affordability and luxury in a compelling package - which will be challenging the best that Toyota, Ford, Mitsubishi, VW and Isuzu have to offer. In the form of the Hilux, Ranger and D-max, while not forgetting about the Triton, Amarok and Karoo.
At on R550 000 for the 2 litre diesel full spec model, with an 8-Speed ZF transmission, radar cruise control, heated seats, collision sensors to name a few, is nearly 300k cheaper than a top Hilux.
Could we be seeing a changing of the guard in the ultra-competitive pick-up segment, which accounts for a large proportion of overall sales?
    Only on Africa Sideways.

Chinese are bringing interesting vehicles, but they need time to beat the well known big names. Competition is good for the consumer.

Hi, enjoyed your review, I am in Australia and have ordered a Cannon, hope to have in a month or so, I was very impressed with what you get for the price. We are getting a 7 year warranty at the moment with a 5 year cap price servicing etc.

This feels like a real world test and it seems better than the rest. If you are only allowed 120 km/h this diesel is fine and fuel efficient.

Pick my one up (Cannon X) next week. Not a huge fan of the CCCP but the price and value are overwhelming. Any suggestions of whether you can fit bilstein shocks would be appreciated?

It appears the majority of South African have welcomed the GWM ute with open arms and open mind. In my country Australia it’s a political issue with Chinese made cars, half people just hate it because it’s chinese. Aussie people are really patriotic even though we are a multicultural society. I have not yet seen a negative comment about the p series in your country on TH-cam however if you check out GWM Cannon (that’s what we call it in Australia) on TH-cam you will see many many hate comments! I admire you guys openness!
