Best cheap 4x4 dual-cab ute? GWM Ute 2023 review - Great Wall Cannon, Poer, GWM P-Series pick-up

  • Is the GWM Ute the best cheap ute you can buy? Yes. It probably is.
There are plenty of reasons why it is, too -- it has a longer warranty than the mainstream brands, has four-wheel-drive dual-cab models for less than $40K drive-away, and has a five-star ANCAP safety rating too.
Sure, it isn't the best ute to drive, but it is better than you'd probably think.
And the interior of the Cannon X double cab pickup is a thing of beauty, especially for the price.
It's affordable (the same price as a five-year-old Toyota HiLux or Ford Ranger with 200,000km!), feels high-tech and has heaps of features.
So, is there a catch? Watch and find out!
Apologies for the bad camera focus in the safety section, too!! :whoops:

Great review. I have seen so many journalists compare this to a $70k Ranger and write it off. They’ve completely missed the point. It’s not trying to compete with Ford’s refinement or Toyota’s resale value; it’s offering customers a ‘good enough’ entry in to the market and a vehicle that will go 90% of the places the others will, without having to remortgage the family home.

Most reviews of this ute is overly positive but after 17000km of owning one, I am yet to find a review that identifies its achillies heel- the electronic safety systems.
These are utter rubbish. Nervous, even jittery. Unrefined and untuned and virtually useless. The adaptive cruise control appears to be managed by and old engineer in China, sitting behind his computer and taking charge of your ute. It overreacts on curves, slowing down the vehicle totally unneccesarily with other cars threatening to tailgate you. Useless tech.
The lane assist is similarly jittery and unreliable and to disable it you have to press on the touch screen 4 times every time you start the ute.
The proximity sensor at the rear, when towing anything, screams every time you slow down at a stop or in traffic. No way of switching it off permanently!
There are more issues but it spoils an otherwise solid ute. Sorry I elected to buy this one- should have settled for a second hand Ford, Toyota or VW.

I have owned this ute for over 2 years now (over 40,000 km). I simply cannot fault it and if (because after driving many through the years) the Ranger is better (I cannot tell the difference), it certainly isn't $30,000 better. For me it wasn't about "being able to afford it", I just couldn't justify spending $73,000 for a Ranger with the same equipment level. I bought my last XLT new just for $43,000 only 8-9 years ago. And that was pricey as is. So you tell me why an equivalent Ranger costs almost $30-40,000 more these days? Anyhow, I have another 5 years to go on the warranty with this one, so far no regrets...

A review that gets the point, would love to see a comparison review of the challenger brands: ldv, ssangyong, mahindra and GWM. All brands in the same price point. Every other review puts them up against much more expensive utes, and these come out second best, and fair enough, I’d hate to think you only pay 20-30k more for a badge.

Im still shocked that you didnt trash this vehicle😮. Regardless thanks for the review, youre the first to quote the tray measurements, its really helped. A colleague of mine saw a red one on demo and she loved it, she likes to carry stuff(hardware and furniture) quite a bit and is currently driving a Rav4 from 2 generations back(has the spare on the tailgate) and shes been using that to haul her odds and ends. I was steering her towards a PPV or a MPV but when I measured the cargo areas most of them have less cargo accommodations that what she has now(they really dont make them like they used to). While the length of the tray the is shorter than what she has now in total(she has about 72" with the back seats down) the width is exceptional. Ill have to give this another look, thanks.

Weirdly enough they have another ute in China (the Shan-hai Cannon if you want to look it up) with a 2.4 litre motor pushing out 480NM. I would imagine it would fit in this ute easily considering how big the bonnet bulge is, and they could keep it as a reason to get a Vanta or XS-R, or maybe even the Cannon-X over the Cannon-L

@@orangejuicepony6881 that’s an over-simplification and inaccurate. if there is an over-representation of DPF issues in GWM customers, it either means that there is a systemic vehicle fault or a sales culture education failing regarding diesel driving behaviour. Either are a good enough reason for the average buyer to do more research before buying one.

Be careful though, you might get a call from the 'reviewers guild' chastising you for not saying the 'C' word a minimum 58 times... :)) I test drove this and the Musso and very much liked both compared to the mainstream brands. For anywhere from 15k to 30k less, it sure does show how much the better known brands are marking up their offerings.
For now, we bought a Rexton Ultimate (again saving around $25k compared to the comp.) and will revisit the Musso and Cannon when the face lifts arrive later in the year.

A great non-origin centric review. Not what we're used to. But amusing that GWM is still considered a " challenger" brand. Holden after the same time in Oz was offering the EH. How long do we want?.

    • @dizzyreckless5991
      @dizzyreckless5991 ปีที่แล้ว

@@theodociocozanitis5437 I somewhat agree on the lack of on-demand 4x4, though it's not something I personally need as I don't often traverse severe adverse weather. It is comforting to have 4x4 H and L for when I actually go off-road or come across the odd icy/snowy traverse. With regards the '5 Stars', well, we probably don't share the same requirements when it comes to how much the vehicle is doing for us. Thankfully, they both actually crash well, so the addition of electronic interference is a personal preference and nothing to do with safety.
As I said (and echoed in your statement), I'm waiting to see what the facelifts for both utes brings also. Ssangyong is also bringing a facelift to the Rexton, so I may even get a second one of those if the mood takes.

@@MikeJones-mz5ig Yeah, I agree. They've been around long enough now and the product reflects the coming of age of the brand. The main thing holding it back I think is the perception still sold by reviewers and main stream media. With regard to Ssangyong, they are one of the oldest car manufacturers but have had many set backs in the overseas markets. Funnily enough, they are one of the main suppliers to their local military in S.K, essentially utilising the same underpinnings of the Rexton (from which the Musso was derived).
Western markets are seemingly a hard nut to crack, manufacturing consent is well and truly alive throughout our markets.

Fun fact, Cannon puts more power to the wheels than a Navara and Triton, purely down to the ZF8 speed, its also quicker too, but they are all slow really. Then remember the price and how much a dyno tune costs, and you see why so many people have one.

I don’t think that you can compare the performance potential of either the Triton or the Navara’s 2.3L twin turbo to the Cannon. Both are better, less stressed engines that have higher and safer performance potential. An ECU flash also has warranty implications. I think the 2L engine is good enough, but not for a lot of applications such as heavy towing that this vehicle claims to be good at.

no offence, but from your comment it'd pretty clear you didn't even driven one. I drive currently a Triton and Navarra in the work fleet and owned a Ranger for 5 years and all I can say, that if you didn't know what you're driving, you wouldn't know the difference. All that talk about the Ranger drives better is BS. But even if it did not, $30K better. The Triton definitely drives worse and what modern diesel car needs a valve adjustment at every 50-60K km as the Triton does? Anyway, I like the Navara but even that is $15-20K more on the road. And, I get 9-10 litres out of my Cannon to 100km, with the ranger you were lucky to get 12, the Navara is 11 ish and so is the Triton. And all that "engine power" talk, never once though the 120 KW from the Cannon wasn't enough. I suggest you go and have a closer look and get positively surprised as I was. TBH, if it wasn't for two mates owning Great Walls with over 200,000 kms, I would probably wouldn't have looked either...

And if it weren't for china buying 150+ billion worth of stuff from us, you probably wouldn't be able to afford the lifestyle you have. Also, what does Japan, USA and all the other western countries actually buy from us? Not much if anything at all. So when you buy Chinese, you actually support our own Mining industry, because more you buy, the more materials they buy from us. If you buy a Ranger, you send your $$ to America, same goes for Korea and Japan and getting not much in return. On top of that, Chinese products are hit with tariffs. 20-30% of the price of this ute will end up in he pocket of the government, not so much the case of Rangers, Hiluxes and all the other brands with Fre trade agreements.
