This is a rare Ray gem we were all just treated to there, notice how the master can recusitate a tired little tune like "My bonnie" and transform it into a soul gospel tour de force. He truly was a Ray of Light...
Yes! Ray could transform old songs like Bonnie, or say Swanee River, into the most soulful music you had ever heard. What a soulful, innovative musician he was with whatever he chose to play!
First saw Ray Charles live in 1962. I Went to his concerts anytime I could and saw my 20th concert in 2000, 4 years before he died. Every concert was, in the words of Joe Adams his manager, an experience in "the captivating, invigorating and scintillating sounds of the Genius-the genius of Ray Charles". He was a musical genius and one of the few who could make you laugh and cry in the same damn song. Miss him.'
how much he has impacted music baffles me, he was so inivative with his music he could turn any thing into a hit, not to mention the greats that accompanied him, margie hendrix and david newman, both great
From my Facebook page: "Wow. Mind-bogglingly beautiful version of a song you probably never conceived could be done as an African spiritual. Breathtakingly beautiful and almost inconceivably flawless. And back when it was all live."
Fathead didn't get Ray messed up on dope. The movie got it wrong. I've had the pleasure of meeting and playing with him, and I can assure you that he is one of the kindest, most generous people you're likely to meet, and his playing is as sharp as ever.
This reminds me when I was a kid I used to listen to every nuance of Ray's records, over and over, even the off the record sighs and interjections of Ray and the Rayletts, like the little exchange that begins with Marjorie's(?), what's the expression, sotto voce, 'Well well' behind Fathead's solo.
Sometimes I wish they had tv in color, so I could see which color were dresses and the whole stage, but then I realize this black and white is exactly what this song needs, soo smooth and nice :)
I bought this immediately when it came out on DVD! Reason being that it is the only known footage with Margie Hendrix (2nd from left)who was the ULTIMATE Raelet!
Saiu em dvd "O Genio- Ray Charles Live in Brazil 1963". Apresentação no Teatro Columbia em São Paulo, dia 19 de setembro. A apresentação foi exibida pela extinta TV Excelsior na época.
Is it possible to get more laid back than this? Ray baby, you're a genius. I always though this song was a bit corny. I guess it's all in the feel and the fact that you believe it Ray, and you make us believe it. God bless you. Rest in peace.
The intro sounds just like Randy Newman playing! Ray was a big influence on Randy, but I've never heard a Ray Charles song that sounds so much like Newman's playing.
Ray Charles May God carry you up to Heaven on his wings of Love!!! You sang from the heart which made all of us feel it in our hearts. I love and miss your talent!
Just checked your profile. Very impressive. I think I finally found a guitar player who knows when to shine and when to let others shine. I get so tired of the Rock Star wannabes. I front a blues band and I encourage these guys to listen to Guy, Sumlin, BB King. Even Clapton's blues work. "See how they get out of each other's way when they play," I say. Alas, sometime all they hear in their heads is "Oooh, I get to be a star now." Wish you were around here.
best live performance of the history man thats music thas rithm thas soul thas players and together sound like one thing do you know what i try to said no tricks pure music
Yes David Newman is my father's father. Definitely an underrated GREAT! I am proud to have his blood pumping through my veins.

Do it Ray, bring that funky soul! Sing it Rayletts, get it girls! My mother used to sing that song to me. I miss you Ma.
It's also worth noting how willing Ray was to share the stage with other amazing talents, like the backup singers and Mr. Newman.
The bass man is diggin' into that box !!! Way good 🙏

You're telling me, but time does not wait and 1963, though sweet it may be, is but a speck in memory ..... Heart breaking !
