The first time he played this song was because he was playing for a club and ran out of material, so he improvised this entire song. The crowd was so into it he just kept playing. Amazing
@Skrill Dilly not everyone did. And the fact is really interesting. They made him play more so he came up with this song and there are a lot of other songs he made and recorded from the first time.
Oh my god...Why I wasn't born at that time too see him live in my crazy and wonderful hometown, Sao Paulo - Brazil?!!!!!?! The "paulistas" (as it's called who was born in Sao Paulo) really love the american black music, whether it be the Jazz, Blues, R&B, Funk, Soul etc
And just think: He's playing this blind. Even the most trained highly practiced concert pianists look at their keyboard when they play. This guy never could. Well, this is brilliant! -But my heart soars to see all the horns playing “auxiliary percussion”! Whatever the future holds, I live in a time where I get to see this!
Although this song itself may not be technically very complex or anything, the thought that he actually "wrote" it by ad-libbing it live on stage in front of a paying audience is just mind blowing. Not just the talent, just think of the guts it would take to do something like that. Absolutely Amazing.
@@adrianveseli3379 and spesking of Killer, aka Jerry Lee Lewis you should give his version a listen. Will also blow you away. Between his 3 on sun theres m as ny live versions he did at his shows
Wow!!! I'm speechless... this song is the very soul of blues music. An orchestra, some backup singers, a feverish tempo, and the leading voice of Ray singing a very basic score and you have, like, the very best song ever written!!
God bless Ray Charles! He not only wrote TIMELESS music, but he was "lightning years" ahead of Obama in trying to bring God's peace to all who bleed the SAME COLOR blood together!!! I love ya Ray! "GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!" Please send us music like that today. And they all had their clothes ON!!!! That's singing , singing and singing. The musicians read music. How great was that.
Why does everyone always feel the need to state their age or say how crap music today is. Not all the music today is crap just like not all the music back then was great. It depends on what and whom you listen to. It also depends on your musical tastes. And being "13 and listening to old music" has nothing to do with how cool you are for listening, it just means you like music. I'd just like to go to a comment section of an older song and see people appreciating the song rather than generalizing all current songs or seeking praise for listening to a song. Good music is good music. That's all there is to it.

Thanks! Wonderful history
it makes wake up and move each of smaallest bones
Thank you. Glad we have You tube and the internet so that we can see and enjoy these gems! we can stop to smell the roses over and over again.
This man was free styling before there was a term called FREESTYLE the man was a musical genius 🙂
I know what you mean but there is a term for it in jazz and blues. Improvise
Genius, wasn't that his nickname?
The first time he played this song was because he was playing for a club and ran out of material, so he improvised this entire song. The crowd was so into it he just kept playing. Amazing
Wow! Never knew that!
The movie got that part correct.
Awesome song , by a Awesome musician
That is simply…a genius move. Only those talented enough “can just RUN with it”
Great tune 👌
Poor.Black.Blind and growing up in the deep south USA in the 40's. I am not complaining about my life ever again.
He played a bad hand about as well anybody ever did.
Right on ✊🏿you aient lying! Ray # 1 hands down❗💯🎯👍👑❤
I think Ray Charles is one of the few performers who is better live than in a studio. His live recordings have so much energy.
+Anthony Enea He made more money in live concerts later in his career, and not so much in recordings.
+Anthony Enea i think the best music come from live performances and a true measure of talent
very well orchestrated
Ray is a bad ass
Justin Ping yes
One of the coolest piano riffs ever.
His voice, his energy, his piano playing is incredible
This recording is 50 years old. jeeeeeez
Ray Charles was one cool cat...no one better..no one had more soul and talent than brother Ray...one of God's gifts to us...Thank you Lord.
Fun fact! This came to rays head during a live performance.

Esta canción empezó todo un género musical. El Soul, mi genero favorito ❤
And just think: He's playing this blind. Even the most trained highly practiced concert pianists look at their keyboard when they play. This guy never could. Can you imagine the hours he must have practiced to know the right position of every key? To be able by slight touch instantly know where each one is.
A true musician. :)
Ronnie Milsap could too.
I can play this and I find that looking down at keyboard is distracting. You gotta FEEL this grove!!😀
Concert pianists play songs significantly harder than this. These soul/blues songs have very repetitive patterns which make it easier to play. Over time, muscle memory will make it easy for him to play the songs. Impressive, nonetheless.
My sentiments exactly. Play piano and after 50 +years I still have to find Mid C first. Rat C is awesome.
That song has tons and tons of soul and energy in it. Excellent work Ray.
This is the greatest rock and roll song ever --- the genius of Ray Charles will live forever
YES!
50 years later... I am watching this video in TH-cam

@Raymundo11 I think he meant he saw him do it live and now he's watching it on TH-cam lol
There will never be another. Music has changed. This is true talent.
Isn't he the greatest ever?
!!!
No. Why? Because you said 'isn't (which means is NOT). Now had you said, 'is he...?' then my response would be 'YES!'
@@malcumx5933 isn't he can be construed as is he not. You taking it to mean he is not is stupid and pedantic.
Best version
I saw him live in '91 when I was 20. He's definitely in my top 3.
Well, this is brilliant! -But my heart soars to see all the horns playing “auxiliary percussion”!
Whatever the future holds, I live in a time where I get to see this!
Ray Charles was one hell of a man and one hell of a musician and God bless him
The One and Only - there will never be another. Thank You God.
Ray was one of our all-time best!
This man is the reason I learned guitar without looking as much as possible...in case I went blind....turns out I never look...I listen...is better.
I got introduced to ray Charles because of the movie ray and to the people who haven't seen it,it is a great movie
Ray Charles wasn't just a musician, he was an icon, inspiration and a legend who will live forever through his music.
watching blues bros yesterday,Ray was proudly hanging up a Blues Brothers Poster...upside down :)
Although this song itself may not be technically very complex or anything, the thought that he actually "wrote" it by ad-libbing it live on stage in front of a paying audience is just mind blowing. Every band member HAD to best in the business! Ray didn’t miss a thing.
My favorite Ray Charles song of all! So great
The Greatest! To me, It’s Ray and Aretha!
Damn this is real music man.
My favourite song when I was young❤️
RAY CHARLES UN GENIO
i like this song as my parents played it on 45 record in the 1960s as i was kid and now i like this song 2011 in CD
If I had to pick the greatest singer I've ever heard it's that blind guy at the piano.
Stevie wonder?
Band doesn’t sweat ✊🏾
"GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!" Please send us music like that today. And they all had their clothes ON!!!! That's singing , singing and singing. The musicians read music. How great was that.
it's not a brilliant tallent. It's a pure genius. That's the pure genius.
It's rare, but you know it when you see it. He's the epitome of "cool," the way his performance seems effortless. So glad to have seen him in person.
One if my favorite songs by this talented man few nowadays can say that
très bien joué par le géni ray charles
Looks like he’s not even trying. And yet this so good. Amazing! 👍🏾

Sorry. I'm 30. May be old by some standards but most music today is pure SHIT. The same was true in the 80s and 90s.
