In Canada, the IN300 sells for over $5000 dollars new. I was fortunate to find this beauty on the used market and bought it for $3000 dollars. Once I had it hooked up to the rest of my system I knew I had made a gem of a choice. This one is going to stay. I use the Denefrips Pontus II as an external DAC and I'm quite happy with it. I think I'm going to have many years of audio bliss with this combo.

There are just too many Hegels in the current 2nd resale market.....too many owners selling Hegel whuch i dont fathom. Atoll with their solid components will easily win me over. Great good intro to ATOLL !
THANKS Atoll for this good quality product in the sea of MICs.

I like to see companies that care about build quality. Not all do as you well know. Internal DACs are known to be the source of noise on some pieces of equipment, not all. I prefer an outboard DAC, but not everyone has the room for separates. Detail and transparency matter to me so despite it’s other qualities, I would have to pass on this one. I’m glad not all think and feel as I do. It is refreshing to see and hear that anyone reviewing gear would admit to a bias of any sort. I see that you value honesty more than opinions. This is just part of what gravitates people to this channel. They know they will get the real about whatever is being reviewed. Keep it up Tarun as it is working for you!

I am demoing one now...Tried Musical Fidelity A1 (special), Sugden A21 (pretty special), Exposure 3510 (very good but a bit fatiguing) and the IN300...it's pretty much like a "best of" these amps. Powerful, warm, fast, smooth, deep bass, controlled, beautifully built, sexy interior....The A1 beats it for packaging though: spiral bound a4 manual, soft cover and a pair of white gloves?! (should have been oven gloves, right?). Yes please. I know...but the gloves just give it a boost. For £1500 the A1 is amazing and at around 70db to 80db levels it is very good. But....the IN300 has a nice sounding DAC implementation, Bluetooth, more refined power than most will ever need, and just sounds sublime. Speakers are ProAc D2R.

This is my favourite Sub 3k amp. I compared it to the Technics G700M2 and it really outclassed it. The IN200 may look similar, but its not just about the power difference, it has a bigger soundstage, better detail and plays much more musically. I actually prefer it to the Hegel 190. Good review Tarun, I am glad someone is actually shining a light on high quality, not so mainstream companies like these with exceptionally well built and high quality products.

QotD: I was running a Dolby Atmos 7.1 system via a Denon AV amp. However, I got fed up with speakers and cables everywhere, and now use the same Denon amp to run a 2.1 system. DVD player is also a SACD player, and the Denon amp has HEOS.
Thank you for the review Tarun. Placing amps and speakers on a warm-cold scale in recent videos has been particularly helpful in deciding on a two channel amp to pair with Mission 770 speakers I recently purchased 👍

Thanks for reviewing this amp. I was able to purchase an Atoll IN300 on the used market, replacing a Hegel H90, and the improvement was significant. I have an external DAC that has a headphone amp/preamp made by Soekris, and I found that this sounded best when connected to the Bypass inputs.

I have some Antals and think the H190 is too polite as Tarun says. Is it silly for me to say I would miss the way it looks though? Lol!
The Atoll is probably a better pairing sound-wise but I'd miss the elegance of the Hegel.

Nice review. It was not surprise to me regarding your clarification about Hegel H190. I have owned same amplifier for about 1.5 years now and it is really over time becoming obvious - its really good for its price class. Upgraded recently to Amphion 7LS speakers and it showed H190 is still great..
For movies i use Denon X3700H 5.1.2 speaker setup. Front tower speakers are connected to H190 using Denon preout. Works well. Will be upgrading to Cinema 40 next week.
Atoll is interesting one for those who havent got yet amplifier at that price class. Dual mono is good selling point at such price.

Great review as always. I''ve always liked amps with that dual mono setup. As for TV listening, I have a very small room so I combined my computer with my TV and I watch movies and shows on my PC monitor, which is a big 43" monitor 4k / 144Hz and HDR1000 (1000 nits luminosity) which has outstanding quality. (I watch - rarely - the regular TV with a DVB-T tuner card and some dedicated software: TVHeadend for the DVB-T tuner server and Kodi for the GUI) The audio part comes from a DacMagic 100 connected via USB to the main PC, going into a Rega IO and Rogers LS4A speakers.

I have heard him say such on several occasions. I wish it was possible to get more info on how to build synergy into our systems rather than just buying the next best reviewed piece of gear. I confess that I'm not much a video/home theater guy. I do have the ability to run TV sound through my 2-channel system, but I hardly ever do. But I hardly ever watch films so. I so enjoy my hifi system and spinning silver discs. Just a way to tune out the noise, and as Dennis Foley says "listen and breathe".

Great review! On to the question - I run an AV pre and a stereo pre on a stereo power amp with two selectable inputs, use the AV pre for home cinema (RCA) and the stereo pre for two channel audio (XLR). Obviously also use another 3-channel power amp for the 5.1 system. This also allows me to send video signals from devices connected to the AV pre (the HTPC mainly) to the TV while listening to vinyl for example at the same time. I also send the RCA output of the stereo pre to one input of the AV, for the rare occasion where I want to "upscale" an obscure ambient music cassette to 5.1 for example. The stereo pre also has an AV pass-through that I am currently not using though.

Love the minimalist look especially in black. Very cool. Thanks for another video about audio components you don’t often see and read about in the US. Keep them coming! To answer your question I do most of my music listening on my 2 channel setup in a dedicated room. TVs are watched with the family and they don’t care for all the gear and the depth, volume and impact of hi-if when viewing so I have Sonos Beam 2 with a mini-sub system connected to the TVs we watch. It’s a good compromise and the Sonos systems sound Ok for occasionally streaming music.

Great looking amp with a good connectivity options. I especially like the simple but tasteful design (could say the same about Hegel) I have the Krell KAV400 which is also a high powered class AB integrated with balanced ins, preamp out, preamp bypass, and tape loop but without the digital or phono connections. While I mainly use a tube (valve) amp, I love having the KAV400 on hand because I know it will work with any type of speaker I hook up to it. The sound is neutral and clean but not analytical and allows you to hear what your speakers can do. Bass is fast and tight and not over-exaggerated. Used Krell integrateds make a great budget option for someone who wants something like the Atoll or Hegel but can't afford the 3k price tag.

Absolutely spot on Tarun. I have both and I can confirm. Both drive my Amphion 7LS very well but I think the Hegel is slightly ahead on bass control and definition. Also the Hegel is absolutely dead quiet whereas the atoll as a bit of noise when compared (can’t hear anything 4m away though). The biggest difference, in my opinion, takes place on hard to drive speakers. I have a set of Pylon Jasper 23 (polish manufacturer) with Scanspeak drivers and the Hegel controls those brilliantly, While the atoll is OK there is a clear difference, especially on the bass. Im the opposite entirely. I absolutely love that Hagel include the DAC and streamer in the H190. If "synergy" is such an important thing in a system, I'm absolutely going to trust the company (if reputable) who builds the amp to include a dac and streamer that best shows off the capability of said amp. I dont buy this notion that an internal dac/streamer will be plagued by jitter and distortion - not at this level, and unless you're a bat I highly doubt you will hear any. Plus, any distortion of sound you think you're picking up with internal dac/streamers, you are likely to entirely replicate by adding interconnects on external equipment. Swings n roundabouts. I'm glad you mentioned Sugden, as thats still my absolute dream amp and nothing comes close (imo) at this price, or any price in fact. It is perfection. And in fact the ONLY thing I wish Sugden would do, is create an amp with a dac and streamer integrated, for around €3.5/4k. Their current dac is also a doozy, but at €2.5k alone its way beyond my reach. They do a pre amp with that Dac inside...but please Sugden, if you see this, please please create a wallet friendly a21 special special edition with a dac/steamer.

As for your question I am not big on video (who needs movies with the crazy times we live in). I do watch them though (but no TV) and for that (don't laugh) I have an LG beemer on a coffee table pointing at a piece of bare wall. I added a center channel by purchasing a Schiit Audio SYN. I power the center channel speaker off of a mono Fosi Audio.amp. It’s perfectly adequate for Television and movies but I’m sure it will be upgraded piecemeal over time.

Atoll always gets great reviews, thanks. My TV audio is fed by toslink to a stereo Onkyo A9130 amp, Q acoustics 3020i & a monoprice sub. All very low-fi but just enough to improve on the TV sound alone, although I still use the TV speaker as a faux centre channel which helps with dialogue..... I know, I'll get my coat!

I connect my tv, blu-Ray player and PS4 to an old Sony 5.1 system that also plays DVDs and SACDs. The Sony only has 1 optical input, so I use an optical switchbox. The PS4 handles the Netflix/iPlayer/Prime etc streaming duties.
My main stereo system is in the same room but is kept separate from the AV stuff.

Home theater integration has changed a lot in the past few years. I run off the pre-outs in my AVR 850 arcam into the home theater inputs in my integrated amplifier eci 6.
Then run the pre-outs into a sub from the eci.
I mistakenly understood AVRs to be Hi-Fi for many years. But you can have both using the method I describe above.

You just reminded me that I need to connect my lounge TV to my main system because I rarely use the surround sound receiver I started with that's there -- it sounds not so good compared to my Hi-fi system that's also there. I'd rather have good stereo sound than mediocre surround sound. Looking up the TV manual, I see I need a mini jack to RCA connector. Will look for one tommorrow and if I don't have one will buy it from Amazon.

I love my current analog only amplifier (class A biased, 33 Watts). I could be very tempted by the IN300 and its digital inputs, built-in DAC, and power. My amplifier runs the sound from my TV via an excellent little Toslink DAC (Argon Nano), and from my music server via a Qutest. There are many many cables.

Great review as always. I have a small box that extracts an optical/toslink signal from the HDMI from an Apple TV 4k. The optical signal is fed into an ifi nano iOne dac, then into a Cambridge Audio AXA-35 connected to a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 12.1. Not quite audiophile, but very enjoyable for me listening for hours without any fatigue whatsoever.

    • @boneseyyl1060
      @boneseyyl1060 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I also picked up the AXA-35 this year. I had it powering my main KEF Q-550's from an older pre HDMI Denon AVR. It was an immediate step up from the Denon on 2 channel music. Much wider soundstage than the Denon and just that hint of warmness in the midrqange. Nice detail too. I think it is a fine integrated, especially for the price. But in the last week, I finally replaced the Denon with the Marantz Cinema 70s. The trade in offer on the Denon was too good to pass up.
I have to say, once again I was truly impressed. I had hoped to use the Cambridge for the mains in my 5.! setup, but when I had it hooked up it did not sound as good as I expected. I believe the issue is one of channel leveling between the two or something else I overlooked. In any case I think I prefer the sound of the Marantz's own amps in this situation. Same spaciousness for soundstage, but with a bit more air and detail in the top end, than the Cambridge. Very similar sound but the Marantz has won me over now. I have moved the Cambridge to the bedroom now and it still impresses me through a pair of Axiom bookshelfs. And I would say that while your equipment may not qualify as audiophile due to price snobbery , I would still think the sound of your system deserves that title, from my experience at least.

Speakers are Dali Opticon 6 + Alteco, then Opticon LCR as centre, side and rear speakers - it's all hdmi so gets arc from the tv, but also have UB9000 blu ray player which plugs into the receiver - as this is also a fantastic CD player, and it has 2 channel output directly into the M3Si and hdmi into the receiver.

Hi Tarun. Thank you for your opinion about this amplifier. French device eh? I have a French device too; an Audiophonics HPA 400 ET power amplifier which drives the KEFS R7’s. The amp is fed with signals coming from sources via my Streamer/Dac/ Preamplifier/DSP with Dirac Live! The Mini DSP SHD, which also drives the SVS Micro 3000 Subwoofer. Only my RME Fireface UCX II soundcard, and my TV are wired to the Mini DSP SHD. So yes I use this HiFi system to get the audio out of my visual equipment. I’ve always done that; use my HiFi system to get the audio out of all sound producing devices I have. I’ve never succeeded in getting decent audio out of a (flat) TV or even laptops, not even those equipped with Harman Kardon speakers and what not.

Regarding AV audio, I used have sound playing through my conventional stereo HiFi but starting thinking I must be going deaf or something as, often times, I could not hear dialogue at all clearly which really ruins a good movie. It finally dawned on me that the problem was not with my ears but with the fact almost everything these days comes with a multichannel sound track and my rig was simply not capable of picking up the all important centre channel. So, I purchased a JBL Bar 9.1 which pretty much solved the problem and can deliver Dolby Atmos to boot, although the effect is limited by room size versus the fairly small detachable rear speakers of the JBL Bar. I still find audibility of shows and movies can be variable but I fault the production, not the hardware for that. Right at the moment the JBL Bar is in for a warranty repair so I've had to resort to listening through the TV speakers as my HiFi is now in another room and I have to say, all things considered, the TV speakers not too bad although sometimes we really have to crank up the volume to hear dialogue properly.

Some years ago I turned my back chasing Multi channel for movies after taking things to 7.1 and considered it had already gone to silly lengths..
So I decided to return to my 2 channel roots (but with higher fidelity)
for the past 8 years or so I have been stereo plus sub
(in truth would far prefer a second sub)
    for music and TV alike.
Stereo for movies underpinned with a sub or 2 is extremely enjoyable but does clearly lack the 360 degree steering that only becomes possible with loudspeakers everywhere including above but my music has never sounded better. 👍🏻

You reviewed the Atoll IN200 some time ago and found it to be on the lean side of neutral so I was intrigued to hear that the IN 300 was on the warm side. In your enthusiasm (?) for the IN300 you did not mention width and depth of soundstage an area where you found the IN200 lacking in depth. As an IN200 owner I have not this to be the case with either my old transmission line Casle Howard S2 speakers ( which are being refurbished/upgraded y Wilmslow Audio) or their replacement Gato FN-15 which have also the the added benefit of better imaging and dissappearing.
