The names of Thai months are actually from Sanskrit words and based on Hindu Astrology… no wonder it’s so hard! I don’t even know the names of all the American zodiac signs!

It might help you to understand about time better when you think about the sun more. Basically, we put times into 5 different zones: Morning/at dawn(Mong); Afternoon (Bai Mong); Early evening /dusk (Mong Yen); after fall of the night/later in the evening (Tum); dark time/before dawn (Ti). Maybe with the concept of the sun and its lights it helps you to understand the images before you start to memorize the words. I think it is something along the line of different shades of snow, but in Thailand we have much sun, so the system is based on what we see outside.
Come to think of it. I think it is really basically the same concept of putting colors into words. Different shades have names that derives from the nature.

You are right, I think thinking about the movement of the sun/what I see outside would definitely make this easier : ). ถ้าเป็นรุ่นโบราณจริงๆ ยังใช้ย่ำรุ่งหมายถึง6 โมงเช้า ย่ำค่ำ หมายถึง 6 โมงเย็น และ อื่นๆ อีกมากมาย เพิ่งมาใช้ระบบ เวลา 24 ชั่วโมง ก็ปี 1928. ครับ ส่วนปฏิทิน ชื่อเดือนได้มาแต่ปี 1889.

Wow, that's crazy!! I mean,,,, back then, we had 자시, 축시 etc., but we don't use it anymore. It's cool that they still use their traditional time system!! (hmmm.... but I also thought the US using fahrenheit and pounds so.... lol)
Right? that's why I almost gave up learning Thai month names until I made this video. Oh, I didn't know we had this kind of time system in Korea too back then. And yes..... I feel like the U.S. is probably one of the very few countries that still use the imperial system..... to this day, I still don't know how hot/cold fahrenheit is.....or how far a mile is.....-.-; ㅎㅎ
