Nice to see them all compared at once. I was going to get the flannel but I think I'll get the wool instead. That way I don't have to layer as much if it gets real cold
The unlined one confuses me. Im not a fan of the wax against the skin (even if it does go away). The thing that confuses me is why they market it as a summer version, wax doesn’t breath, and if it’s hot the wax will just heat up and be oily. What they should do is choose a heavier maybe 10 ounce unwaxed cotton and use that for the unlined one. I’d buy that in a heartbeat.
The wax doesn’t get oily in the heat. But it certainly is warm wearing a waxed jacket casually in the summer die to it or breathing as you mentioned. It would be more for cool mornings, late spring/ early fall or out in the bike in the warmer months. I use to wear a denim jacket through the summer or a textile jacket for riding. My textile jacket was completely shot, and the denim was close to retirement. So this was a perfect replacement for me. I ended up wearing it a lot more than I thought I would. But I see the hesitation about a summer weight waxed jacket.
Hawaii weather is pretty consistent around 70 degF during the winter seasons and a miserable humid 80 deg during the summer. I wish I knew sooner about the unlined jacket before they sold out on the XXL tall size. Luckily F&T had the flannel lined in the right size so I took a chance. Two weeks and half a dozen sewing and alteration TH-cam turorials later, I removed the flannel lining, hemmed the inner pocket edges and re stitched the smaller pocket. Quite proud of the outcome.
Thanks for this comparison video! I'm a big fan of my flannel lined jacket and agree that it seems to be the most versatile of the three and is likely the best suited for the weather here in the PNW (Vancouver)
I’ve spent time in PDX in the summer. But from what I hear, it doesn’t get as cold I. The cities up there as it does on this side of the Mississippi. So flannel would suit you best out there n
Excellent comparison! I live at 8709 feet in the Colorado mountains, so would love to see someone make a parka length wet waxed canvas insulated jacket wth a hood. The only thing I've seen so far is the Kuhl Wyldfire series and Fjallraven for dry waxed. Any recommendations?
Hmmm. That out of my wheel house at the moment. I don’t live wheee it’s cold enough for a parka. So I’ve never really went down that rabbit hole. I Wilkins stay my search with google the YT reviews.
Definitely not from driving. I mostly drive with my left arm and rest my right elbow on my center console between my seats. It could be from my watch though. I’ve never thought about that. I’m gonna have to make a conscious effort to see what I’m doing with my left wrist when I’m putting it in out of my pockets but I do also wear a bracelet on my right wrist. Definitely not as bulky or as structured as my watchband, but would still create some sort of scuff mark when it flips upside down as I’m putting my right hand in it out of my pocket .
I have an obsession with symmetry. If they'd have done 2 chest pockets, I would have purchased one years ago. I then looked at Iron and Resin but their flannel lined is foreign made. So, I got the Soso type 3. It's done how I want, and I love it.
I remember looking at SoSo in the beginning of my waxed journey. Don’t they do a lot of selvaged denim? And make custom jackets? Edit: you’re the one who told me about SoSo!
@jeffgrantMEDIA yes and yes. All of their stuff has custom touches you can do. You can adjust sleeve length, body length. You can choose your lining or no lining, buttons, zipper, material, thread color, etc.... Mine is a type 3 13 ounce waxed canvas with flannel lining. It has both zipper and button closure for riding motorcycle. You can actually get a type 1 or 2 also in canvas or various selvedge denim weights.
Great review bud
Thank you very much. And thanks for watching!

The wool is very nice. Hell they are all great. I’m glad I don’t have to choose one, I get to keep them all!

Left arm watch rubs on left pocket … especially when driving.
That’s the cause of your extra wear.

You may like the Devium Deadeye Waxed Canvas Trucker Jacket. It has double chest pockets and is 100% American made but it has a full quilted lining.
