Still my favorite fighting game of all time. My dad used to take me and my bro to play it at the arcade and he always said, when this comes to Super Nintendo i’m getting it for sure. Well, one day we came home from school and my mom brought us to the basement to see my dad playing killer instinct on Nintendo and we went nuts. We played it all the time
Yeah, because none of us will ever be a child again. Much of nostalgia has little to do with what is actually being remembered and who we were at the time we are remembering what was happening.
@@veghesther3204 Yes Like I said, Kevin Bayless did the majority of the motion capture even attempting to wear high heels and walked like a woman.Since that wasn't convincing enough they did end up using a woman for the cut scenes for orchid
The sound for this game was amazing. It was booming in every arcade. The music and the announcer were on point. This and Robocop had the best attract mode.
Can’t believe it’s been almost 30 years since this was released. Arcade goers like myself were blown away when this dropped. The graphics, the gameplay and the SOUND. This game literally SHOOK the arcade floor with its Hollywood quality soundtrack, bass heavy hits and insane callouts. This game always drew a crowd. Great video and wonderful synopsis as usual, Pat!
The on the fly audio eq'ing, although just for certain high pitched sounds and voice announcements to get the attention of everyone in the arcade was so clever and ahead of its time. This came way before games started having variable sound effects for punches and gunshots and menu sounds. Now the sound effects and music are taken for granted for the most part.
This was a great Arcade game back in the day. I remember this being at our local arcade back in the 90's. I really feel bad for the kids of today who never grew up in those arcades of yesterday. I am so glad I grew up in 80's and 90's era.
Unforgettable and awesome game. Not only is the music awesome, but as someone said, the themes FIT the characters too. So many great things about this game, i am glad to know of its existence.
Thanks as always for the vid. Back in the day at the university arcade, there were two crowds: the Virtual Fighter 2 crowd, and the Killer Instinct one.

I remember having the first installment on the SNES when I was a kid! Certain sound effects and music (especially the music of the end of match) actually scared the hell outta me! The same should be said for the visual effects when the losing character gets knocked out from the top of a building and it lands on the ground hearing that scary final piece of music! When Big Patman's in the house....... You KNOW it's gonna be a SUPREME VICTORY!!!! PERFECT!!! 👍😁
There's something about the character select screen and music that was just scary. Even when you were putting in your high score. I remember Riptor and Sabrewulf being scary on their win screens. It's kinda wild all the blood Sabrewulf had in a Nintendo game.
Back during those early days of fighting games (hard to imagine there was a time the genre was new) this was one of my favorites. I got the Gameboy version as a gift and was amazed at how much it captured compared to the arcade and SNES originals. Very recently picked up an Xbox One and the reboot was an immediate purchase.
I played the hell out of the GameBoy version back in the mid to late 90s. It was a surprisingly good port - given the hardware limitations and all. Although, looking at it now I am surprised how much of the “graphics” I actually “rendered” in my head back then based on the basic shapes on the gameboy screen. Thank you for bringing back my child memories!!!
Great video Pat! My friends and I first saw this in an arcade room at a D&D con. The graphics at the time were so mind blowing it was like peaking in to the future. Really cool of you to show all the finishers BTW! Also I'm glad you talked about the voice acting, in particular the overly amped up announcer who I felt was a huge draw.

While I never got as good at Killer Instinct as I did with Street Fighter 2, it was the only other fighting game I spent any meaningful time with. Back when I was living in Los Angeles I was lucky enough to get to play a test machine for KI in Westwood, at an arcade near the UCLA campus. It was cool, as you had so many fighting game guys known in the community coming through to see the latest and greatest. The internet was barely a thing back then, but a few guys showed up from time to time with finishers and such, but since it was a test machine, things changed pretty regularly. Sadly, this was probably the last arcade game I actually spent time playing at a real arcade, as that culture was coming to a close by this time.
You know, I never got is good at killer instinct as I was at Mortal Kombat and especially not street fighter. I still had fun playing it though. So like you were in a pretty cool spot as far as arcades go
I lived in arcades at that time and played a ton of MK and KI. And NEVER have I ever seen a finisher/fatality/ultimate ever done in KI in any arcade so much no one even knew they existed. It wasn’t until a few years back when the updated version came out that I even saw them on TH-cam.

This brings back memories, with my best friend who passed away from cancer last December. He was a monster at this game, Getting High with the feeling.... RIP Ric my old friend! CCCC Combo breaker!
Man, two videos of my favorite fighters released in a row! Cinder had even more names. Announcer sound files were found in the game for “Pyrotech” and “Headshade”. I’ve also seen early footage showing his name as “Meltdown”. This game imprinted on me as a kid. I remember the first time I put a quarter in it. It was 8am at my local 24 hour arcade. I showed up still half asleep to beat the crowds and play MK2. I instead spotted this new machine with a huge skeleton on it. I had to try it. I jumped from the extremely loud “Killer Instinct” from the announcer. It looked futuristic. I was 11 at its release but honestly and foolishly thought I was seeing something from the future. It looked years ahead of any game in the arcade. I went on to run a Killer Instinct fan site & forum for 16 years. I’m so happy to have this machine in my collection. It’s truly a dream come true for me. I’ve played it consistently since it released and I’m still learning new combos to this day. I still marvel at the technology and coding. Thanks for the video Patman!
I prayed they put this in the snes emulator on the switch. ever since they did, I still play this game like crazy. wish I could play others online though. great video homie👍🏾

I played the ever loving HELL out of Killer Instinct back in the day. Perfect for an edgelord like me back then. A robot with Wolverine-esque claws? A werewolf? (later with cybernetic arms!). Super hot ass kicking female? Check, check, and check. My friends refused to play me at it because I would get them in those huge combos and they'd never be able to do a combo breaker. Great video, Patman. As always!
Great video Patman! I knew I had to put this on this morning while I had breakfast. Used to walk up to Godfathers Pizza (now Rudy’s Tacos) and played this several times a week. I fired it up a couple weeks ago on my OG Xbox. Definitely lost my skills 30 yrs later lol
Why thanks, I hope it increased the enjoyment factor of your meal :-) I used to like going to godfathers as well, they usually had pretty cool arcade games
Great video as always Patman!! Fun fact, I have the voice from the game saying danger, eyedol, glacius, & cinder for specific text tones for certain friends…cinder is for an annoying buddy lol
Thank you for making this combo. If you could explain more of killer instinct 2 in your next video as well as go in depth into the characters I would be very grateful if you could do that. Thank you for making this video.

omg RC ProAm The things I remember about this game were the fluid animations, amazing sound and the music that would thunder head and shoulders above the entire arcade lol
I remember how the SNES game came out on the first day of my freshman year in high school. I got through the day eagerly awaiting the game, and when I got home I finally found it there.
It’s funny how a lot of people I think forget that the N64 was gonna be the Ultra 64, there are still posters and ads for it out there. I had no idea about the Famicom history, that’s very cool! This is actually one fighter I’ve always liked, fighters aren’t normally my thing usually. Lots of great info here, my favorite finishing clips was being thrown off the roof lol. Great vid as usual Pat!!! ❤️🎮
Great video! KI and KI2 are really tricky to emulate. If you're using Batocera, you'll need to have extra folders in your ROM folder with CHD files from the game in them in order to get it to work.
What I really remember especially as a kid was the sound, it was so cutting edge at the time. Ka-Ka-Ka Combo Breakerrr! Even the Gameboy soundtrack slaps (chiptunes), just like the arcade version.
Oh man , i remember going to aladdins castle arcade with a roll of quarters and would play Killer Instinct for hours, some the best child hood memories of mine.
There are voice clips within the game's data of the announcer saying Heatshade & Pyrotech. These were some other names given, before Cinder was chosen. Cinder was given the most alternate names out of the other characters
There's a good likelihood that Rare themselves decided to keep the finishing moves on the tame side to make sure KI got a Teen 13+ rating when it released for the upcoming "Ultra 64". More kids could buy it. Plus, it mighta been hard to make a bunch of CGI character models with severed heads and limbs, etc, to digitize into sprites. Easier to chop and edit photo-based sprites like in MK.
I played the absolute hell out the original Killer Instinct arcade game and the SNES version (still have the CD). Orchid was always my main. Never could break the 155-hit mark on her Ultra Combo, though...
A game of many firsts - first fighting game to not have throws, first fighting game you can cancel special moves. First game to have rendered 3D backgrounds. First game to have secret stages (sky/dungeon) Also, BEST music in a fighting game. EVER.

The things I remember about this game were the fluid animations, amazing sound and the music that would thunder head and shoulders above the entire arcade lol
Absolutely :-)
I remember how the SNES game came out on the first day of my freshman year in high school. I got through the day eagerly awaiting the game, and when I got home I finally found it there.
That's awesome, did you like it
It’s funny how a lot of people I think forget that the N64 was gonna be the Ultra 64, there are still posters and ads for it out there. I had no idea about the Famicom history, that’s very cool! This is actually one fighter I’ve always liked, fighters aren’t normally my thing usually. Lots of great info here, my favorite finishing clips was being thrown off the roof lol. Great vid as usual Pat!!! ❤️🎮
It is pretty interesting. Also, rumor has it that the ultra was dropped because of konami owning the copyright to Ultra games. Thanks Rob
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentariesoh now that’s very interesting actually!
@@retrobeliever That should have said ultra games. Sorry my voice to text doesn't work that great Sometimes
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries ohhhh ok, and no worries!
Great episode Patman, I personally would love to see a KI2 and reboot, episodes. Tight
Thanks a lot
Great video! KI and KI2 are really tricky to emulate. If you're using Batocera, you'll need to have extra folders in your ROM folder with CHD files from the game in them in order to get it to work.
I tried three different CHD images in a number of ROM sets but could not get the proper combination
I still have the "Orchid" songs from KI1 and KI2 on my playlist 😎 lol
Heya, Pat. With all the crap you're going through, I've been running through your back catalog. Just saying hey again and get well soon!
Another great video! Still love this game. Sabrewulf was always my go to. Who was your favorite fighter, Patman?
I preferred either TJ combo or orchid. Thanks buddy
What I really remember especially as a kid was the sound, it was so cutting edge at the time. Ka-Ka-Ka Combo Breakerrr!
Even the Gameboy soundtrack slaps (chiptunes), just like the arcade version.
Yes the soundtrack was phenomenal
Love your videos my man!
Glad you like them! Thanks so much for watching
This was like the game to play on my old SNES. My graduation party in 96 we did best of 3 at random. Hit the arcade constantly, loved the sound track.
Soundtrack was killer no pun intended
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I still have it
Oh man , i remember going to aladdins castle arcade with a roll of quarters and would play Killer Instinct for hours, some the best child hood memories of mine.
A roll of quarters LOL… I was lucky if I got tWo dollars to spend :-)
Wait…is there a book for sale that you showed at 08:19?
There are voice clips within the game's data of the announcer saying Heatshade & Pyrotech. These were some other names given, before Cinder was chosen. Cinder was given the most alternate names out of the other characters
I didn't know that, veryy cool
I have a magazine from that time that he was called Meltdown.
That could be. Although they had no problem with Mortal Kombat 2 violent finishers so who knows.
Another killer documentary by PatmanQC !
Thanks two live crew
Never played the arcade version but i have killer cuts and 2 copies of tbe snes version. This is my favorite game of all time. Grew up playing my dad
That iss very cool
Who is the girl in the lower lefthand corner of the splash page showing their I.P.’s @ 3:41?
I played the absolute hell out the original Killer Instinct arcade game and the SNES version (still have the CD). Orchid was always my main. Never could break the 155-hit mark on her Ultra Combo, though...
Killer Cuts!!
That's insane
I would like to know more of the development of KI2 behind the scenes
Love your vids. Thanks
Thanks a ton
Love the newest addition the the intro!
Glad you like it! He's a really nice guy
A game of many firsts - first fighting game to not have throws, first fighting game you can cancel special moves. First game to have rendered 3D backgrounds. First game to have secret stages (sky/dungeon) Also, BEST music in a fighting game. EVER.
I needed a new pat man qc today it was one of those days thanks a lot man ! By the way me and my friends used to play this a pizza 🍕 restaurant back in the day and arcade a and then his Nintendo 64 ha ha .
