    I saw SO MANY people on tiktok saying “Sally would never treat Percy like that, she would never yell” like imagine not realizing just how exhausted it is to be a single mom or a single mom of a kid who demands a lot of care. To treat such an iconic character as an actual complex person is absolutely perfect and people wanting her to be this flawless, never annoyed mom is pissing me off 😅

    • @halle2216
      @halle2216 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      Omg yes!! Also people keep forgetting the fact that Percy is an unreliable narrator. When you love your mom as much as he does at that age, you see no flaws. As a parent you hide those struggles from your child. Sally is allowed to have those moments of imperfection as a parent. Expecting her to be perfect every moment is more of a observation of society expecting mothers to be a certain ideal

    • @pinsandneedles3

      I feel like people who have this take are priviliged enough to not know what actual toxic parenting looks like because they've never experienced it. I hate to throw around the word privilege around like it has no weight but in this case I think it actually applies, I know what REAL toxic parenting is due to experience and "normal parent-child relationship privilege" I fully believe is an actual phenomenon based on how some people online behave. (It should be a right, not a privilege, but that's beside the point here). There's an almost intentional lack of awareness of how certain family dynamics manifest because some people are too arrogant to consider that their family experiences are not the same as everyone else's. It's easy to criticize what you think is bad parenting when you were lucky enough to be raised by emotionally healthy people. It makes those people feel more righteous and good about themselves, all while inadvertently silencing the voices of people who actually have the lived experience and can speak more accurately on the topic.
      Like I said, I know what real toxic parenting looks like and I have long-lasting trauma symptoms as a result. Sally's behavior in this show is 100% the mark of a healthy parent. She gets frustrated, yes, but it's normal stress as the result of being a single parent with limited resources. She has never done anything in this show to harm Percy either emotionally or physically, and equally as important, she has NEVER used her struggles to guilt trip him into feeling bad for her. A true emotional abuser will have a martyr complex and make the child feel horrible about being such a burden to their poor, suffering parent. This is especially a problem in toxic family systems where the child is neurodivergent (again, experience speaking here). Sally tries the best she can to shield Percy from that (even though she's not entirely successful), and everything she does is for his good even when he doesn't understand it. She doesn't use her son as a means to throw a pity party for herself. She unconditionally loves him even when that effort sometimes causes difficult moments between them.
      This show's emphasis on the parent-child narrative and commentary on generational trauma has been so cathartic for someone like me to watch. I don't know if enough people (again, who may have blinders on due to the aforementioned privilege) are taking into account just how healing something like this show can be for certain people. It's the same frustration I had with certain fans who missed the point of WandaVision while some of us on the trauma train were very heavily impacted by it because we understood Wanda's journey (even the uglier parts of it) on a personal level. All it takes is a little exercise in empathy to understand why a story's particular execution may hit certain people in certain ways and an appreciation of why that might be significant to them even if it doesn't totally line up with your experiences. Does the show have certain storytelling issues? Sure, but it's handling the generational trauma theme beautifully and for whatever plot flaws it has, I'm so glad it's leaning so heavily into that theme. If it's impactful for the adult CPTSD gang, I can only imagine how impactful it will be for the kids who are living in bad family situations to grow up watching this show and know that Uncle Rick & Co. not only get what they're going through, but can give them an example of what a good parent (Sally) actually looks like. When you don't have an accurate frame of reference in your own home, fiction is sometimes the only way you learn about what's wrong vs. how things should be.

      @@aricaj.3006 Totally agree. Thank you for sharing your experience and perspective on this. OK but as an actor I was so impressed with Sally and Poseidon not looking at eachother! Acting is all about connecting with your scene partner and I personally find that so hard to do when I can't look at them. They were so connected though it was UNREAL. The fact that they couldnt look at eachother but also connected instantly told a lot about their backstory. They obviously have real feelings for eachother. Sally doesn't hate him and he desperately wants to be there for her (and percy). Its like they both know that if they lock eyes then they are going to fold and neither of them can afford to let that happen! UGH such a good choice!

    I think Annabeth’s regret has something to do with her father. In the books she thought her father didn’t care about her which is why she left. But in the show she left sheerly because of her step mother and she knows that her father loves her. So maybe her regret is up and leaving her father without any warning.
    That’s something they haven’t touched on yet and Annabeth’s supposed to leave camp for the summer at the end of the season to go live with her father so I think that’d be something that they have to sprinkle in and have her and Percy talk about in the final episode next week.

    The trio knowing most of the traps ahead of time is a really good red herring for the whole reveal that Hades isnt actually the bad guy. Theyre getting all these other things right- they recognize Medusa, they know theyre in trouble on the train, they know Crusty's whole deal- which gives the casual audience no reason to believe they could be wrong about Hades!
    Honestly, some of the criticism of the show is really upsetting to me. Please know that youre one of the beacons of good vibes in the community right now, and i love watching your reactions!

      The trio have been seen every threat coming, even Kronos Percy figures out fast (thankfully Percy isn’t the idiot the fandom thinks he is), so when that one person does the thing next episode it’s going to hit so hard because it’s the first real moment Percy gets tricked/trapped.

      Fr, people are like,”why aren’t the kids being dumb like they were in the book?” And this is one of the things I was confused about when I read the book in 6th grade, I asked my teacher,”why don’t Annabeth or Grover seem to know what they’re getting into? They’ve been here longer than Percy, they should know some things.” And as much as I love that book, some of the traps make the kids look a bit dumb, especially Annabeth and Grover(ik ppl say,”oh but they’re kids!” But being a kid doesn’t mean you’re dumb). I really appreciate that the show makes changes and addresses that yk ofc Annabeth or Grover would know that’s Medusa or that’s the lotus hotel, since they’ve read up on it to prepare just in case they need to go on a quest. And I also appreciate them making Percy a lot more prepared, cause I was confused about him being super clueless too like sally why’d didn’t you prepare him?!
      Also I agree with the comment underneath this, Percy, Annabeth and Grover have been so set on who they think is it and how the journey has set it up to look like hades was in the wrong, that it’s gonna hit extra hard when Percy and everyone realizes the truth.

    I liked how they linked Crusty to the core 'message' of the episode with him talking to Percy about fitting in and being molded by the gods - an issue we explore later in the episode with Sally and Poseidon. I, like you, also think Crusty's felt pretty random in the book, and I really like that they were able to make it more relevant and interesting

    • @Edward-W
      @Edward-W 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

      I will never stop praising the writers on this show for basically connecting everything that felt like a random side quest or distraction from the books to the overarching cohesive narrative and thematic structure they've built with such care. Not only was Crusty's woven into the family dynamic theme but also served a more clear narrative purpose as the secret way to the Uneerworld. They actually *had* to go through this test instead of randomly running into it after being chased by some delinquents on the street and getting trapped.

    I personally love that they already know what they're getting into because Grover and Annabeth have been in this world since like forever now, and it makes Sally a better mother to Percy by teaching him all about myths. Also, it's not like they can avoid these situations either. They have to get into Medusa's house so they wouldn't get captured by Alecto, they have to get into the Lotus Casino so they can find Hermes and they have to get into Crusty's so they can get into the Underworld; so what are people arguing about here? So, first thing first, I also loved this episode. So two things I thought about while watching the episode were: I believe that Annabeth's ankle being stuck on those roots is also a foreshadowing of her ankle being stuck because of Arachne's webs in Mark of Athena. And here, Percy has to leave her behind, but the next time they find themselves in this situation, he is going down with her. He won't leave her alone. He won't leave her behind anymore.
    Another thing that I wouldn't say it's a foreshadowing but it's interesting as a contrast for much later on, is that Sally mentions that she wants Percy to know who he is before his godly family tries to tell him who he should be, which is definitely something that would happen because of him being Poseidon's son.
    (Spoilers for Heroes of Olympus)
    It contrasts Percy with Jason, actually, because Jason doesn't have a loving mother who cares about him. He doesn't have a caring father. Jupiter doesn't care about him. Hera messes with his head from the moment he os still an infant child and he's raised as a kid and until his teenage years to be a leader, to be this figure. He doesn't know who he is. And it's not just his amnesia. _He doesn't know who he is_ . And it's what he goes through during Heroes of Olympus. He has an identity crisis because he doesn't know who he is supposed to be, while this doesn't happen to Percy because Percy didn't go through that part of the struggle. Being a son of Poseidon is not everything that he is. It's not the only thing that defines him. It's not how people perceive him, but that's what happened with Jason and it's tragic for him. But it's also an amazing journey to follow. Him, with Percy's help, figuring out that he doesn't have to be the leader. He doesn't have to be only Jupiter's kid. He doesn't have to feel torn between camps, he can be just a Greek but also a Roman demigod. A normal kid like everyone else. He has to go through a whole journey that Percy didn't have to go through at all because of Sally and the amazing upbringing she gave Percy. So I think it got me emotional because of that. Her actions and strength there help shape Percy into the change that this world needed.

  • @hobbes6557

    I really like how the kids are more aware about the monsters in the show. In the books I was so frustrated about how dumb they were with every new dangerous situation in the books. Grover is literally a satyr and Annabeth has lived at camp for almost her whole life so how did they not know did they not catch on faster about these monsters and what they do? How can you randomly come across a place called Aunty Em's Garden Gnome Emporium that's run by a creepy lady who's head hisses and eyes are covered and her place is surrounded by petrified stone statues of mortals, demigods, satyrs, nymphs, monsters, etc and not make the connection that this is Medusa's modern day layer? Same with the Lotus Hotel and Casino I mean you don't see anyone coming out of it and everyone looks like they're from different eras in time so how can you not make the connection that this is the modern day Lotus Eaters layer? The only monster that makes sense for them to not initially recognize is Crusty because he wasn't as obvious of a trap as Medusa and the Lotus Hotel but I don't mind that they knew who he was right away in the show because Percy's mom taught him all about Greek history so Crusty probably came up sense he's also a son of Poseidon. Overall I think the show is awesome and a pretty faithful adaptation of the books despite some small changes or different interpretations of stories. I love the shows theme of "not everyone who looks like a monster is a monster and not everyone who looks like a hero is a hero" because honestly some of the monsters are victims and some of the demigods aren't heroes which will make sense at the end of the season. Also it was super cool to finally meet my godly parent Hades. He was so sassy and zesty but got series so quick so I absolutely loved the performance Jay Duplass gave us.

    SALLY & POSEIDON FANCLUB GATHER 'ROUND
    Thank you Cam for your work covering all things PJO ❤
    I loved this episode too. Like I said under the reaction video, definitely top 3 favorite so far, maybe top 2!
    Crusty was SO creepy and it was perfect. It didn't need to be any longer and we didn't need to have the trio be dummies running into a trap. And now Crusty's had an actual narrative and thematic purpose, not just another monster trap of the week. What can I say? Good changes. The books weren't flawless.
    The flashbacks are the surprise favorite thing of the show for me. The performance for Sally is incredible every time. The building of Percy's backstory and childhood struggles, his aching (non)relationship to his dad, Poseidon obviously caring about them and listening to Sally and respecting her wishes on how to raise their son, having to stay away but still coming to support Sally when she feels helpless, the list goes on. It's all so GOOODD!
    Charon was great. It would have been an added bonus if we could also see his Italian suit loving chill side but this was just fine. Cerberus being a scary big boi in need of playmates was given enough time and was shown well. He's supposed to still be a fearsome guard dog that could both purposefully and accidentally crush you, just one that also loves fetching balls. And he still keeps chasing even after getting the ball because it's his job and he's a loyal floof!
    **mark of Athena flashbacks ensue**
    Book purist absolutists confuse me with these things. Obviously 1 pearl was going to be lost, don't get mad about it now when you already got mad about there being more than 3 a week ago. Not seeing the changes for how they are made to benefit the narrative and to translate things in adaptation but instead seeing them as slights against the books and themselves as readers. Please just relax. Rick knows what he's doing. I understand being cautious about adaptations and changes but I simply don't feel like the persistent complaints about the same things are all that justified once we see how they've made them work so well just about every time.
    Smol Percy getting excited about homeschooling only for Sally to reject the option leaving Percy to interpret it as her wanting to get rid of him 😭 Oh my sweet baby I felt that pain and I'm sorryyy!
    The Fields of Asphodel were FAR creepier than I anticipated, but it suits the Underworld. The book descriptions gave a much more casual vibe about the whole thing which is nice for a kids' book, but I also appreciate it being so weighty and macabre in the show. It is the realm of the *dead* after all. Annabeth's regret could be about Thalia but I'm leaning more towards her family situation. YEES WALKER'S ACTING! PEAK!
    The trio is definitely not "too smart" as is often the complaint. Annabeth has prepared for a quest since the age of 7, has plenty of field experience from her time on the streets and is the literal daughter of the goddess of wisdom. Grover has been a protector of demigods for the same amount of time at least and has 2,4 decades of experience about living alongside myths. Percy is still new to it all practically speaking, but Sally has told him basically all the stories and myths throughout his childhood. And they never were supposed to be not-smart. 12-year-olds in general aren't dumb. Bit like you said, this moment shows that they (at least Percy and Grover) aren't geniuses or masterminds. They don't figure everything out immediately. Only the things they should be figuring out due to their experience and demigod-on-a-quest status.
    He design of Hades' palace is cool for sure. The throne room definitely gave me Red Keep throne room (Game of Thrones) vibes. I do wish it wasn't so empty though.
    Hold fast mom❤
    I commented on this Poseidon scene already but oh boy there's more... I did note that they didn't look each other in the eye. It definitely works to convey that feeling of being literal worlds apart. Also being former star-crossed lovers who try their best to work it out for their child but still try to be cautious to not get too close and risk falling for each other again. TRAGIICC.
    Poseidon making it rain and arriving the INSTANT he senses Sally's despair and hears her prayer. Also connects the dots for non-readers as to why Sally seeks comfort away from Gabe by sitting in the rain on their apartment's fire escape. It's so she can feel his presence.
    "I want him to know who he is before your family tries to tell him who they want him to be." That sent shivers down my spine and made me cry. Also following it up with "He is better than that. He has better things in him than that" calling *straight* back to Annabeth showing her conviction and feelings about Percy in episode 5. Despite these lines being quite wordy I already know them by heart. That's how much it impacted me. Truly powerful stuff.
    I totally missed that thunderclap! But as another commenter pointed out, Zeus didn't know about Poseidon being Percy's dad until he got claimed. So I'm thinking it's just Poseidon struggling with his tumultuous feelings which manifests in the storm he brought. It also works that way. He's clearly thinking about whether to talk to Percy and is visibly torn but then discards the idea after the rumble and instead resolutely assures Sally that he will be there for Percy when it's the right time.
    And it transitions to Percy starting his fight with Ares on the shore of the Ocean 😭 "I'll be right by his side" I am DEVASTATED I tell you. Percy's going to get help from dad in his big fight 😭 I am dying to see the last episode. I really hope they make the deadline change work and not break anything.

      Annabeth has already journeyed across America with 2 companions, one of them being a child of the big 3. Considering how many times Annabeth talks about getting ambushed by monsters w Luke and Thalia, or taking wrong turns you would think for her first quest every she would be a little more on guard
      But no: she gets ambushed by the furies, tricked by Medusa, leaves Percy alone to be ambushed by Echidna, tricked by the Lotus Hotel, and trapped by Procrustes.
      Like has she learned nothing from being on the road with Luke and Thalia (who would attract the same amount of monsters as Percy)? Must the daughter of the goddess of wisdom be tricked over and over again? Like yes, she’s 12, but she’s also a child soilder, best demigod at camp and has been training for 5 years for this one quest. But in TLT she’s basically the same as Grover, just Percy’s companion. And don’t even get me started on Grover, 24 years of age and has been protecting demigods from monsters for years, can literally sense monsters and yet the trio stick get tricked and trapped 5 times? 6 if you count the Tartarus pit…
      Imagine you’ve never read the books, and start watching the show and every episode is just “the trio get tricked, but then they figure it out and leave” At some point it gets boring to watch

    The Sally Poseidon monologue leading into Percy waking up and preparing to fight Ares, CHEFS KISS! Rain pouring as soon as Sally makes her offering, the shoes dragging Grover into Tartarus, the thunderclap after Poseidon merely glances Percy’s way. This show has so many little details that make it so amazing, people are definitely entitled to their opinions but I feel that many are getting lost in nitpicking and not taking the show for what it is. I’m a long term fan of the books and all the changes haven’t bothered me the slightest bit either. I also enjoyed Hades so much! I'm actually glad that they know. It means that one, they were actually teaching greek mythology in camp and two that Percy mom did try to teach in whatever ways she could so he'd somewhat remember. And three, it means they'd have to strategize beforehand. Also, they have Annabeth, daughter of Athena. What does it make her if they do fall for the traps and are always caught off guard? Anywho, I'm on the they should know train.

    Esp when sometimes it’s so obvious, and also considering one of them is the child of Athena like…?
    And it feels like lazy writing to assume there’s no tension because they dont know who it is, like there are plenty of other ways to tastefully add tension to a scene

    I honestly think that people forget one crucial detail about these books and that is the idea that a quest begets a quest begets a quest, etc. The books are actually like National Treasure for classical mythology buffs. I'll use Crusty's scene for an example. The kids enter Crusty's in the book because a gang of kids found them and chased them, and the people they chase are good for Crusty's business. However, gang wars aren't as prevalent in Los Angeles anymore and it just wouldn't make sense for an updated show and a new audience. What does make sense is Hermes giving the kids yet another quest after Ares sent them off and had them find Hermes in the first place. Meanwhile, Hermes' quest is to find the secret entrance to the underworld which, here, happens to be in Crusty's establishment. The map and the instructions Hermes left them is what clued them in to Crusty and the location of the entrance; we just didn't see them make that connexion and that's honestly ok because as you said, the kids have better things to be getting on with.
    And honestly, Rick has already made a valid comment on the fact that many of these kids have been dealing with these monsters their entire lives. They have been trained endlessly at camp about each of them and the dangers they pose. The ones who haven't, like Percy, also learn quickly on their feet or they die trying. That's the life of a demigod. I don't understand why it wouldn't make sense for them to know everything when they literally train the majority of their summers at camp to deal with these kinds of things. Furthermore, Percy grew up hearing about monsters from his mother and even seeing many of them up close and personal. Of course he's going to know who they are and what their deal is. He isn't stupid like so many fans think he is. Just thought I would point that out.

      It's possible Poseidon doesn't visit the mortal realm often, especially not so far inland, so when he does Zeus just whines like a random "Don't you fucking dare" at Poseidon because his own ass has already broken the oath twice and lost both children at this point (Thalia is about 5 years older than Percy so depending on how old child Percy is she's probably already a tree at this point, while Jason has been gifted to Juno & SPQR by age 3) so he's just being insufferable about Poseidon's recklessness just cause he knows that's probably something he himself would also do. Like, he doesn't know for sure, but that's not gonna stop him being a pain in his brother's butt either.

      @themisheika 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Obviously he's not monitoring Poseidon's every move, I mean how else was Percy conceived without Zeus's knowledge AND kept hidden for 12 years? For all he knew, Poseidon could have just been there enroute to seducing a nature spirit or whatever (Tyson was born like a year before Percy I think?) so he was just being grumpy Zeus as usual just cause he can.

    I suspect that Annabeth had started to revolve things in her head and was started to think about that time around the winter soltice that she just couldn't find her cap. I know a lot of people are thinking the cap is the helm and it isn't, its just the gods don't know how to investigate. And by the garden she is already suspecting things that will make her follow Percy when they return (but I must also say I get the end of the musical confused with the end of the first book). But she is already feeling guilty for not voicing her suspicions.

    They didn't go there intentionally in the books, so the Crusty's scene doesn't NOT make sense.

    Awesome video ‼️ so when they show the Percy and Sally flashback scene it’s from when he was 7yo just seen the Pegasus and he was probably just diagonosed with ADHD and dyslexia and imo Sally is taking all the doctors opinions and Percy is feeling frustrated and broken and like he is not normal. Again they don’t know much ADHD and dyslexia. So imho it’s a really important scene to see how Percy’s diagnosis affected both Sally and Percy.

    I was a little frustrated with the crusty scene but when Percy is like “it’s Kronos” I was like you’re actually kidding, that’s one thing that doesn’t really make sense to me to say as of right now and if he’s realized it’s Kronos shouldn’t he have also realized who the lightning thief is because of what happened? At this point I just want the lightning thief reveal to be actually shocking to him, I’ve lost all hope on him being surprised by anything else but please for the love of god let this boy be shook out of his mind when he finds out and let him find out when he’s supposed to

    It seems more realistic that they know more about the gods and monsters. Annabeth and Grover being naive/stupid in the books makes them look that camp doesn’t do anything but teaches them to fight but nothing about who they will be fighting? Especially how long Annabeth has been at camp…not knowing who Medusa is for the Wise Girl nope not buying it. It is clear that Sally taught Percy a lot and I’m assuming Annabeth and Grover filled Percy in on the rest. Rick is rectifying this clear mistake that was meant for the readers understanding not the characters. Ppl just need to know that difference here. That the characters not knowing was your interest in the book not the characters.

    They're the children of the gods, how would they not have knowledge of the Greek legends. Plus Grover has lived in this world his whole life.

    What a great argument, I already know what happens, so I don't care that they just got rid of all the buildup for the water bed scene and just immediately know who it is and what's going to happen so that new fans can't get that suspense

    I premise everything saying that English is not my first language.
    I don't agree that the tension is useless because we read the book, because the show need to be its thing also for those who didn't read the books, and the fact that EVERY SINGLE monster or opponent, they know what they are, is really anticlimactic, I think that they can know one or two, but everyone? Nope, that's just irritating and irrealistic. It would work much better if there was a little bit more pathos before the reveal, maybe they know that there's something really wrong, but they understand how much they are in danger not at the beginning.
    They went to Crusty just by accident in the book, and there they find the actual address of the entry of the Underworld, which they didn't know beforehand, but I agree that this is the most boring side quest of the book.
    I agree that the design for the Underworld was really good, but I would have liked that they showed for a little frame also the other two parts of the Underworld (I can't remember the names in English) (I know that the show is pg so you can't show the souls suffering, but like, earing muffled screaming and crying won't traumatize kids, they watch so much worse).
    I am not a purist of the books, I really liked some of the changes that the series made, but I also have to criticise when it is due: I think the series have sanitized a little too much the original story (probably bc it is disney), when it really shouldn't: I don't like to make comparisons, but the Harry Potter movies did a better job at this (my personal opinion, I watched the movies a while ago and I could be wrong).
    Otherwise I liked this episode, I liked the exterior design of the palace, but I despised the interior (I really don't think that Hades wold have chosen to be so sober in the decorations of the interiors of his palace, the only thing I appreciated was the Garden of Eartly Delights, that was more in theme).
    I personally think that it would have been more impactful if the fourth pearl went missing while Percy saved Grover from Tartarus, but this is nitpicking.
    I liked the interaction between Sally and Poseidon, it was really emotional, but I don't really like the fact that the way to represent Poseidon was the rain. I understand that it is water, but I think that rain is more connected with the sky than the sea, maybe like the sound of a wave or something like this to introduce the god of the sea would be more fitting that a rainstorm with freaking lightnings (this is also nitpicking, but Idc🤷).
    I can't wait for the finale next week and I hope they renew it (I'm pretty positive about it), but I also hope that the writing will be a little better in future seasons

    I'm one of many Black Sails fans who are watching - and very much enjoying - PJ *because* the BS creators are the showrunners. They are consummate storytellers. You should absolutely watch and react to Black Sails! (Definitely not a kids show, though it's technically a prequel to Treasure Island.) If you didn't already know, Jessica Parker Kennedy (Medusa) and Nick Boraine (Kronos) are also BS alumni.

    I could be remembering incorrectly from the books but didn't Annabeth have some kind of Attraction towards luke, so couldn't her regret be not moving on those emotions and staying only as friends, or is Luke put it brother and sister.

      I don’t think the show will take that route, it seems that they see each other as siblings specially since it is weird that she is 12 and he is almost 18… they might make Luke and Thalia more into a romantic background tho

    • @VonOutlaw
      @VonOutlaw 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @brunanovello281 no that's definitely true I mean I don't disagree, that is just one possible route more than likely it is going to be she feels doubt in her role of what happened to Thalia. I also agree with the fact that they might take it down that route with Luke and Thalia.

    I think it’s very stupid to expect to show that’s now set in 2023 for kids, not to know what Greek mythology is what were they living under a rock?
