    ---------------------------
Bose Companion 2 III and Audioengine A2+ are two compact powered speakers very popular amongs the computer users. They represent two different price brackets thought, so it is interesting to hear if A2+ is worth the extra money. As You probably can hear, A2+ sounds much more natural and detailed but also leaner on bass, while Bose shows usual "Bose sound" meaning it sounds bass heavy with bass smearing lower midrange, and top shy. Bose also has highly manipulated response to push the vocals forward. For casual listetning and TH-cam video watching Bose is a decent option, but if You are serius about music listetning and want it true to the source than A2+ is worth the extra.
What do You think? Have You heard either of these speakers live? If yes, what was Your impression? Let me know in the comments below! Cheers!

Bose has A LOT of DSP (digital signal processing going on) the audio engines are more accurate. If the Audioengines had a sub it would be so much better.

I had the AudioEngine A2 speakers, and they were just too muddy. I tried taping up the port slot, and that improved the clarity, but the sound was generally just not good. Returned them. Even here the plastic Bose speakers sound better, and the Bose are cheaper and smaller. I would equalize some of the bass out of the Bose and they should pull ahead even farther.

The vocal track at 2:18 really highlights the difference between these two speakers. Would love to hear a female vocal track comparison. An absolutely brutal midrange vocal test for speakers is the song "Woman in Chains" by Tears for Fears. You can weed out speakers in seconds, regardless of price, with that track.

Good to use headphones for this.... Crazy difference in quality... AE sounds more like the original recording while the Bose audio sounds like it is a recording of audio played in a club... Bose definitely has the better low end bass though.

I have the Bose, a little old but still work. I was looking for an alternative speaker set to try out and kept landing on the AE A2+. Sorry, but the A2+ speakers I just heard sound like old transistor radios compared to the Bose and the Bose is much cheaper. I guess will be buying a new set of the Bose.

Just picked up the Bose Companion 2 Series III off facebook marketplace for $30. My dell Audio driver has some decent equalizers and settings and am able to replicate the Audioengine A2+ sound somewhat by comparing thanks to this video. The A2+ are IMO better for direct sounding sound whilst the Bose have this spatial deeper base sound going on and can make them feel further away. Can reduce it somewhat with the software and am happy enough with my bargain pick up.

bose sounds deeper, audioengine speakers are brighter. So it makes sense that rock almost sounds like you're in a tin can with the audioengine, where bose excels. The audioengine sounds better with pure instrumental music though. I guess it depends what you like listening too. Overall though I think the bose probably has more versatility for different genres.

    • @xq0404

I've owned those Bose companion 2 and the bose Bose Companion 20 and I am using the Audioengine A2+. The A2+ beats the companion for sure just based on bass alone, the Bose C20s lack definition in the bass being a very mono tone sound.

  • @duncanidaho2097

Haven't had speakers for years. Not familiar with either brand. Listening from my headphones, A2 sounds kind of muddy, no sub bass at all, however, there is quite a bit mid bass bleeding into the mids that I don't understand. On the other hand, BC2's highs sound thin and a bit distorted. It could be volume mismatch or recording issues. Not sure if I would pick BC2, but I would not pick A2+ regardless of price.

listening to original tracks also, the Bose is better at handling lower frequencies but at few places distorts them. Higher frequencies are better with Audioengine with much larger stage and better separation. No wonder - Bose use only a single driver in these.

Thanks for these great videos, they do help show the differences between these speakers.
However in terms of assessing absolute/objective sound quality, the thing that bothers me is this: comparing the sound of Bose Companion 2 in *this* test (e.g. Deep at 4:09), vs the sound of the same Bose Companion 2 in this other test: th-cam.com/video/gYRva8fWylo/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=DSAUDIO.review at around 4:43, I would conclude that the other Bose Companion 2 is much better than this one. So much more mids in the order video :)
As if this video's sound was additional EQ'd using a U-curve, and the room reverb is much more pronounced here, or perhaps it was played at a larger volume altogether so it affected the soundscape, or the author did some dampening to the room walls in the meanwhile. So it's hard to get a full picture unless exactly the same equipment, setup and volume are used each time.
Although the ideal speaker would be something like a set of larger 4.5/5" three-way speakers (Edifier, Presonus, whatever), for listeners short on desktop space I believe ultimately most would would prefer Bose, even if it does DSP processing. The A2 will set you back twice as much, and then you will realize you also need a subwoofer. :)

Funny bose company 2 III serie released more than 10years. I used to own serie 2 for monthes which suprised me with all gen music playing. Unfortunately i sold this pair for bose computer monitor which was lack of bass at all. In 10 years i tried so many desktop speakers, including audio angine a2, mission pulse, wharfedale, ds1, ds2, b&w m1, ruark mr1, creative t20, t30 t40. All of them cant handle bass as well as bose in this category. I tried Q accustics bt3 on desk. its better but you can't say they are computer monitor. And you can't get all sound potential in near field from bt3. I got a second hand bose companies 2 serie 3 weeks ago for 40 dollars. I have to say woo! I do waste too much money and time for perfect desktop speaker. As my experience, desktop speakers handle deep bass impossible. But no pair i mentioned above can hand upper middle bass as good as bose companies. That makes bose sounds more 3d feeling than the rest, and handles all kinds of music, movie and game well. And more listening enjoyingment.
A2 is ok, but not good as people recommend them. They have bigger size and woofer plus tweeter combos, but A2 can't deliver decent upper mid bass. What a shame!
I love accustic music but i don't think play accustoc music well is the creterion for good speaker. At least at this level, metal, electric, pop, rap are much harder to replay as good as simple accustic sound.
Bose do make a pair of legendary speakers. I don't talk about price. I mean bose just better than the rest.

Bose does not sound natural for some reason (DSP?) I would say the Audioengine's sounds way better. Bose in general never seem to sound good, they sound like they are tweaked to make them sound artificially good, with a boomed bass.

New Orleans Jazz: Clearly Bose has lost a lot of detail in sound while A2+ are crisp in mid and high but lacking lows... Listen to the trumpet.

Awesome comparison. Man alive, I cannot stand that shrill, anorexic sound the BOSE has! The Audioengine is just a fuller more spacious sound.

The A2s sound sterile and cold. Much rather have the Bose for the warm, easy to listen to sound. The A2s would sound much better with a sub though.

Bose doesn’t sound warm at all, yeah the A2 lacks bass. But the only thing you hear with the bose are bass en trebles, and both sound artificial. You can hear that bose lacks a lot of detail.

@@charliep3108 They are nice speakers but there are certain things that make the difference of if they are right for you... Is bass music what matters to you? Is sound accuracy your main concern? Is light near silent static or hiss in a silent room bothersome to you?
I personally use the Edifier 1850DB speakers now, they were on sale directly from Edifier when I got them. The 1850DB does not produce the same accurate sound and when used in any other manner than Optical can product a near silent hiss like the A2+ like most other speakers connected by AUX or even USB audio in some cases. After turning the treble up to max +6, the bass down to -4 and connecting optical and having silence in the silence I am happy with the Edifier 1850DB speakers, I also no longer use the included remote and use my i7 Rii mini remote I got off of amazon.

@@sparketech Thank you so much! I do not listen to really bass heavy music and I like having clear mids and highs (that's why I'm looking at A2+) I was thinking of putting them on a small desk to upgrade from my laptop speaker. The desk is in a small room with only a little background noise.
      Thanks again!

@@charliep3108 The A2+ sounds like it'd be a great choice for your situation... It'll be a HUGE upgrade to any form of Laptop speaker... Keep in mind it'll have a near silent hiss and upon computer reboot there may be a pop sound that comes from the speakers. Size, performance and price for what you get the A2+ speakers are pretty much the best when not focused on bass music... PS. I have a review video on my channel.

Trust me, listening to flat speakers for extended period of time is boring and tiring. If you are buying a speaker for leisure and happiness, get the Bose. If you are really critical with the music. Don't get the AudioEngine A2. Get something else.
