Nicely done. The 400 is the staple of drag racing and off-road. Your editor continues to make a rookie mistake that annoys your viewers video after video. The music should be the same volume as the talking. The viewer should not have to adjust the sound down for music and then back up again for talking a dozen times in a video.
Got a motorhome with a trashed body and a 454 with a 400 or 475 behind it. Going to slap a c10 cab on the chassis and a quick wood flat bed. It'll be a sweet rig, these trans are awesome. Love these and 727s.
I do pretty much all the repairs on our vehicles and house , if it's something I haven't done I read , research and watch videos, didn't have YT when I was younger and I call someone who could give me some pointers . But never built a transmission till I rebuilt a TH350 back in 2017 and now I'm rebuilding my 48re for my 05 Ram 3500 , I like learning new stuff, and as Gene Winfield says "every days a school day" I have meet him a couple of times Great Guy .
Editing needs improvement. Music track is way too loud. Biggest sin is that music drowns out your voice in several places, making it impossible to understand what you are saying.
Another great video of a transmission tear down, reminds me of being in vocational mechanics shop. Had a great teacher and the team of 3 that I was on, rebuilt a transmission and the engine in a Camero. It belonged to another teacher in the Vocational School. I also took a body shop class the following year and was lucky enough to be on a team that repainted that same Camero. Plus I did all the bodywork on my 64’ Impala SS, it was very gratifying! Thank You Ian for bringing us a great episode as always and bringing back great memories!
I find your videos always informative, even if it's something that I will unlikely every do myself. However, the level of the music compared to the speaking parts is incredibly high. I'm constantly raising and lowering the volume.
Another great one Ian! Only thing I like to do is I use 2 studs when installing the pump and the valve body for alignment until I get the first bolts started. I damaged a pump gasket once, had redo the whole job a week later.
Ian, I really appreciate your work but wow, the music blasts the speakers out! Either boost your speech or crank down the music a few thousand rpms! (It also seems to cover what you are saying much of the time. I hate to complain since I'm just part of the peanut gallery, but I figured you may want the input
I have always had problems with chrome trans pans leaking. I sand/grind the chrome off the mounting surface and use Permatex and it does not leak. Got a reverse manual valvebody on my tbucket but it is old and doesn’t have engine braking.
Thank you! Great Video! Very informative If my trans is covered in mud like they sometimes get around here would i do any damage if i pressure washed it beforehand so i dont turn my parts washer into the next mudd bogg?
It always warms the heart to see that hair and recall a scene from Airplane: "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue..." Once upon a time, Hollywood did have a sense of humor.
Good video! I'll have to track down some of those books. Especially for the Allison 1000/2000. We replace quite a few and I know just the basics of how they work. I just assume it is magic until I learn how they work. Lol
Great video as always! Would love to see a video like this on a 6L80! Thats whats going in to my TJ here shortly. Though mine is good, it will need a rebuild one day.;
No need for a manual valve body on an Electronically controlled transmission. It has tap shift capability using a Lokar shifter and some simple software tuning. But seeing how to rebuild one would be nice since the 6L80 is fast becoming the go trans for many hotrod and offroad guys. Deep first gear, tall 6th gear, and with just a few aftermarket parts it holds 800-1,000hp or more with ease. My buddy has had one in is 76 Squar body for 4 years now making 950hp and its holding up great, and the trucks faster than it was with the T400 he blew up 4 times. Now yes you can build a 1,000hp capable T400. Many people do. But he blew up 2 that were supposed to hold 1,200+, 1 that was supposed to be rated for 900hp when the truck was still only making 800hp, and 1 rated for 1,000hp when the truck was making about 880-920hp. He had a 6l80 built for it and it has already lasted more than 3 times longer than any of the T400s he had in it. And he says it drives way better on the street and highway now that he has 2 times the gears to pick from, and over drive. I have one sitting here going behind a very mild gen four 5.3L that's going in my Jeep TJ shortly. (Shooting for around 400hp at the crank since its going in a wheeling rig that's not used for mud) I drove a TJ with this exact same setup and was just blown away at how much nicer it drove than mine. (Currently has built 4.6 stroker and a 5 speed manual trans) And how much nicer it drove over my buddies 5.3 swapped TJ running a T350 trans. The 3 extra gears and overdrive just make for a MUCH nicer driver on the street over a T350 or T400. And the Deeper first gear makes for a better crawl ratio off road. Gets better MPG when your just driving around to. And it holds the motor in the power band better when you want hammer on it.
awesome bro i found you finally i woundered where you went much love hope you know your a big part of me welding building and doing fab work also just got a yj im building could you do a video on 4 linking a yj and possible explain those new air shocks and can i run ari or only nitrogen
Question…Diesel Rubicon Gladiators come with 32.7” tires and 3.73’s. If I calculate new R&P to run 39” (38.5”) BFG’s, it comes out to 4.39, so 4.56 would be the closest. I’ve always heard 4.88 for 37’s, 5.13 for 40’s and 5.38 for 42’s. So should I go 4.56 or 5.13? I feel like the torque of the diesel would be enough to make up for the lack in gearing. Overland build with not much serious rock crawling.
Any thoughts on a tj motor swap that's more on the unique side? There's a forum for everything on my jeep, I want something unique but not crazy expensive
Dood at 33 minuets I could barley hear you talk then I turn it up and not even wearing head phone there went my ear drums... Id hate to have had in ear buds.
What are your thoughts on shaving a 14b ff? Does it make the housing weaker if NOT adding an axle truss? Do yoh have an opinion on the TMR 15 bolt shave kit?
My oldest brother might be able to get me on a deal for a 04-06 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited out of a junkyard that can be made street legal. I was wondering if you know of any easy chassis swaps to install aftermarket Baja independent suspension vs swapping a newer Wrangler chassis?
Great content! My Scrambler is going to get this mod! A little critique, if I may…. Voice is too quiet or music is too loud. Impossible to hear instruction when talking and playing music simultaneously.
I've read that full manual valve bodies are bad for longevity in street driven vehicles due to the transmission pump being forced to generate full pressure even when it's not needed. (since there is no longer a vac modulator to tell the transmission it isn't under heavy load) This constant high pressure leads to a shorter life expectancy of the both the pump and the torque converter. Would you agree and if so, why isn't that a concern for you in this application?
I guess I could see the argument for a daily driver that sees 30-40K miles per year....but I don't see the argument about the pump working at max pressure.....the pump inside a transmission is not a "modulating" pump, it flows the same pressure at all times, and the pressure is controlled by the valve body. And yes I could see the argument about that pressure flowing through the TC....but TBH most vehicles with MVB also have a high or higher stall Torque Converters....this generates higher heat and load more than pressure from the pump. I would argue that the MVB will extend the life of a well built trans because it eliminates all the "slip" in the system. If anything the abuse is more serious downstream in the drivetrain with extra load on things like U joints, ring and pinions, and such.
another full manual reverse pattern valve body by hughes suggested tapping a hole in the pump, installing a set screw, and drilling a reduced sized hole to limit the max pressure to a more reasonable range to prevent damage to not only the transmission, but the thrust bearing in your motor as well. Apparently the increased pressure can put excessive thrust onto the torque converter and into your motor.
How's the 2nd to 1st down shift feel? After putting an RMVB with engine braking it feels too harsh and will throw you thru the dash if your not prepared 😂
I find this video very informative, however the backround music is too loud and sometimes you are hard to hear like you are turned away from the microphone while speaking.
Bro your music is way over modulated and clipping turn it down. also dialogue audio too low especially compared to the music. I was turning up and down all through the video very unpleasant. Content was perfect though. Take it as Productive criticism. Youre better than that
Idk who is editing your videos, but it makes it hard to hear what your saying when they start blasting the music while your still talking. Less music would be awesome
The typical I can rebuild a transmission without changing any lip seals and you never use a wave on a transbrake application and the pressure is definitely wrong you need a new pump pressure spring many mistakes were made building this transmission.
Nicely done. The 400 is the staple of drag racing and off-road.

Kudos to you dude!
Ive been watching this guy for 20 years !

The simplest machines always last and are the most durable. 400 is that.
Hey grate channel
But can let your sound person know that I we turn the volume up to we can hear want your saying than the music blow out ear drums!
I've always watched transmission rebuilds and thought it was black magic but I honestly think I could tackle one of these !!
Love the content but who ever edited this, the music is too loud in 2 segments and twice I could not hear what Ian was saying.
