The XC90 is a better car than what Carbuyer suggests. Mat is biased to the Audi brand as to why I understand his enthusiastic conclusion. The XC90 is considered the best luxury SUV in the segment by MANY other credible sources, and so what that Volvo doesn't have the "douchebag status quo image" like it's German counterparts.

I would have the Disco any day just knowing you can and do anywhere or anything is amazing, it looks beefy it has size and the name land rover basically means: King of off road, how cool is that and been able to sit so high above the other people on the road feels great and the tall gate at the back is great to sit on!

Good review. I just (literally... a couple of days ago) bought a 2017 Q7. Haven't taken delivery of it yet. I think the Volvo looks better inside and out, and is slightly more comfortable, but not much. The absolute only reason I went with the Audi is because I can't deal with a touch screen for *everything.* I know it's all the rage, but some of us still like buttons and knobs for quicker access to often used functions. The Land Rover's technology was just sorely lagging behind the times.
Since when does a LAND ROVER has better badge than Volve? Just laughable. We are not talking about Range Rover. Its like saying Toyota has better badge than a Honda just cause it also has Lexus in its range.

Audi hands down. The sheer build quality of the Audi trumps the other two by quite a big margin, and I also like the outside of it. Easily the best one of the three.

"You do have to step up and drop down to get into in" (LR) - You both are daft. LR has access mode on its suspension, so it drops down on its suspension to allow granny to get in, or heavy loads into the back.

But the Audi interior feels way more high-class with the excessive use of real aluminum and overall good materials. Everything shiny in the Volvo you touch is cheap plastic. Hi Carbuyer, you guys should also compare the three with their previous model. My point is if the new version of any car does not offer any major improvement than the previous model, it's not worth it. I have 2011 Disco 4 and I don't see why anyone would want this new discovery. Almost everything is the same.
+nemanja milosevic My thoughts exactly. I like Audis but the XC90 has the edge for me. The interior is warmer, nature, (in the light colors) very airy and modern feeling. You feel like you are in a special place. The Audi is very modern, high-tech and clinical and it works for folk who like that feel. I like that feel. But for value for money, the XC90 wins on looks and practicality. It really looks the part and the interior seals the deal. It may not handle as well as the Audi and the engine may not be as refined but it close enough for me. I will say this, the XC90 ride is near prefect on smooth road but it does get choppy on rough roads, it is very noticeable on bumpy roads. Im not sure how much the air suspension solves this issue.
Exactly, the Q7 is way too dreary in its design to me... The interior is also comparible to a grey afternoon in it's colours. Sadly, the majority of the q7's ship with those colours...
Quite a contradictory statement surely? LR Discovery was based on design theme of the Discovery 1 which itself was styled partly on the defender 2 box shape. The Defender, whilst brilliant is a design over 70 years old.
Meanwhile the Audi and the Range Rover get more Boxy, Volvo starts to desing. I would defenitly buy the Volvo not only because it looks the best but that engine dear god
Most people would say they prefer XC90 on the internet, but the reality is if XC90 can sell 50% as many as Q7, it's a huge success for Volvo. Also be aware that this XC90 is a part-time AWD with a transverse engine (worst in this class).
I wonder what happens with Volvo's mpg when you load 5 people and their luggage in it? Will that small engine work in high revs all the time with an even worse mpg as a result?

But with real load or a trailer, and specially in mountainous areas, that little engine will work really hard with lousy mpg as a result. It's simply too big a car, specially with all the loads it's expected to manage, to have such a small engine.

+Bruno TaTa Obviously it does NOT get better fuel economy in real life, as demonstrated here. People buy these cars for loading capacity, be it people and their stuff or a trailer. A smaller engine has to work harder, it's normal and nothing you can escape, specially in mountains going up will demand more of the engine. It's normal for a bigger engine to work easier (lower rpm) to do the job than a small one (higher rpm=more fuel). You can go so far with new tech and materials to off set that. But in the end a bigger engine in such a big car WITH load will do the job with less fuel. And a car with bigger engine costs more. Also normal, specially if it's a higher premium car. Load up XC90 and 3.0L X5 and see which one is quicker. It was obvious in this video that Q7 3.0L was quicker.
With a lift kit and black wheels, the Audi Q7 would look miles better. The bodywork in my mind isn't completely unattractive, just the stance of it makes it look like a slumped over crossover, not a full size suv.
I have 5 kids so the 3rd row is important for us. I’m not keen on the 90, love the Q7 but I’m leaning more to the D4 as I do like it although I do travel a lot on motorways for hours so need a good road car too.

I’d take the Discovery (perhaps a Range Rover instead) always. If I want a good, comfortable family car then I’d get an estate car or a people carrier. Whereas the Land Rover is best at actually being an SUV, you can climb a mountain with it.
The Q7 is the perfect daily driver. It has 7 seats, nice spacious interior, very luxurious and high tech. It just feels special. Plus, it's way nicer in person.
The Q7 has the smallest 7 seater. The dash looks like a spaceship. All about preference I supposed. But I don't want 1000 buttons on my dash. I paid 64k for luxury, not to go to space.
Audi probably wins on driving comfort. But it's infotainment system is way too clunky for some mid-age drivers... Volvo wins in it's simplicity. Basically, an all-time driver picks the Audi for it's comfort, a thinking man picks the Volvo for it's practicality and value, and obviously an off roader would wait for the next Land Rover Discovery.
Take the car with the weakest engine... ... complain about the engine being to weak. Well... get the T8 if you want a more powerfull engine.. Also if its the inscription model its way cheeper on the T8 anyway, making up for a lot of the diffrance.
If only this new Q7 didn't look so bad, everything is so busy, the front end is just downright ugly... I might have liked audis better when they weren't trying too hard to iterate on the same shapes.. The Volvo is the true "designer" car here, it's really a thing of beauty, especially on the inside
I hate the look of the new Q7.. Plus, IMO the interior of the Volvo is way better. It has apple carplay, and it looks a lot less cluttered than that complicated Audi.
that's your opinion but the people who's opinions actually matter because they review cars all the time said they think the Audi has more high waulity materials and a nicer interior overall. and in my opinion the Volvos interior is very nice. It's just not as up market and as classy as the audi.

I have sat in one, frequently, because I own one. The Q7 interior is the best in the segment ,has won awards as such. You are trash talking and have definitely not had the pleasure of sitting inside.
To be fair, the Discovery 4 barely even fits into this category because it's more of a touring 4x4. More at home amongst a Toyota Prado, LC200 or Nissan Patrol. Would like to see the Audi and Volvo doing some rock crawling in a comparison. Also, getting in and out, you have air suspension, push the down button!

For the record, Carbuyer's ratings (all reviews by Mat) of these cars when not head-to-head were: Land Rover Discovery 4.3 / Audi Q7 4.3 / Volvo XC90 4.5 .... not the same equipment as in this test, but there you are. Discovery Sport, a newer car, rated 4.5. I noticed in re-watching those reviews that the mileage reported by the cars' computers was different than in this comparison as well - there was no mention on the LR, but the Audi and Volvo rolled in at about the same 33+.

Exactly, the Q7 is way too dreary in its design to me... The interior is also comparible to a grey afternoon in it's colours. Sadly, the majority of the q7's ship with those colours...

Quite a contradictory statement surely? LR Discovery was based on design theme of the Discovery 1 which itself was styled partly on the defender 2 box shape. The Defender, whilst brilliant is a design over 70 years old.
Meanwhile the Audi and the Range Rover get more Boxy, Volvo starts to desing. I would defenitly buy the Volvo not only because it looks the best but that engine dear god
Volvo all day. Take away the badges and its definitely best and most versatile.
Most people would say they prefer XC90 on the internet, but the reality is if XC90 can sell 50% as many as Q7, it's a huge success for Volvo. Also be aware that this XC90 is a part-time AWD with a transverse engine (worst in this class).

Q7 is best choice here. It probably is best mid sized SUV now in general.
I wonder what happens with Volvo's mpg when you load 5 people and their luggage in it? Will that small engine work in high revs all the time with an even worse mpg as a result?

But with real load or a trailer, and specially in mountainous areas, that little engine will work really hard with lousy mpg as a result. It's simply too big a car, specially with all the loads it's expected to manage, to have such a small engine.

FYI, the new XC90, with new methods construction and materials, weighs 400 lbs LESS than a BMW X5, and only 150 lbs more than an X3. It barely outweighs their own XC60 awd I6 versions. It's BIGGER but not HEAVIER.

Obviously it does NOT get better fuel economy in real life, as demonstrated here. People buy these cars for loading capacity, be it people and their stuff or a trailer. A smaller engine has to work harder, it's normal and nothing you can escape, specially in mountains going up will demand more of the engine. It's normal for a bigger engine to work easier (lower rpm) to do the job than a small one (higher rpm=more fuel). You can go so far with new tech and materials to off set that. But in the end a bigger engine in such a big car WITH load will do the job with less fuel. And a car with bigger engine costs more. Also normal, specially if it's a higher premium car. Load up XC90 and 3.0L X5 and see which one is quicker. It was obvious in this video that Q7 3.0L was quicker.

With a lift kit and black wheels, the Audi Q7 would look miles better. The bodywork in my mind isn't completely unattractive, just the stance of it makes it look like a slumped over crossover, not a full size suv.

I have 5 kids so the 3rd row is important for us. I’m not keen on the 90, love the Q7 but I’m leaning more to the D4 as I do like it although I do travel a lot on motorways for hours so need a good road car too.

I'll Dislike - Hate the Audi Q7, I'll Like the JLR Discovery4, I'll Love the Volvo XC90 in my own Opinion.

I’d take the Discovery (perhaps a Range Rover instead) always. If I want a good, comfortable family car then I’d get an estate car or a people carrier. Whereas the Land Rover is best at actually being an SUV, you can climb a mountain with it.
I'll pick Volvo all day long! Why don't you compare the petrol version of them vehicles and let us know after about the power and consumption ;)

The Q7 is the perfect daily driver. It has 7 seats, nice spacious interior, very luxurious and high tech. It just feels special. Plus, it's way nicer in person.
The Q7 has the smallest 7 seater. The dash looks like a spaceship. All about preference I supposed. But I don't want 1000 buttons on my dash. I paid 64k for luxury, not to go to space.

Audi probably wins on driving comfort. But it's infotainment system is way too clunky for some mid-age drivers... Volvo wins in it's simplicity. Basically, an all-time driver picks the Audi for it's comfort, a thinking man picks the Volvo for it's practicality and value, and obviously an off roader would wait for the next Land Rover Discovery.

Well... get the T8 if you want a more powerfull engine.. Also if its the inscription model its way cheeper on the T8 anyway, making up for a lot of the diffrance.
If only this new Q7 didn't look so bad, everything is so busy, the front end is just downright ugly... I might have liked audis better when they weren't trying too hard to iterate on the same shapes.. The Volvo is the true "designer" car here, it's really a thing of beauty, especially on the inside
I hate the look of the new Q7.. Plus, IMO the interior of the Volvo is way better. It has apple carplay, and it looks a lot less cluttered than that complicated Audi.
that's your opinion but the people who's opinions actually matter because they review cars all the time said they think the Audi has more high waulity materials and a nicer interior overall. and in my opinion the Volvos interior is very nice. It's just not as up market and as classy as the audi.

I have sat in one, frequently, because I own one. The Q7 interior is the best in the segment ,has won awards as such. You are trash talking and have definitely not had the pleasure of sitting inside.
To be fair, the Discovery 4 barely even fits into this category because it's more of a touring 4x4. More at home amongst a Toyota Prado, LC200 or Nissan Patrol. Would like to see the Audi and Volvo doing some rock crawling in a comparison. Also, getting in and out, you have air suspension, push the down button!

For the record, Carbuyer's ratings (all reviews by Mat) of these cars when not head-to-head were: Land Rover Discovery 4.3 / Audi Q7 4.3 / Volvo XC90 4.5 .... not the same equipment as in this test, but there you are. Discovery Sport, a newer car, rated 4.5. I noticed in re-watching those reviews that the mileage reported by the cars' computers was different than in this comparison as well - there was no mention on the LR, but the Audi and Volvo rolled in at about the same 33+.
