Another thing that should be noted is if you can run a game at 40fps...do it. Valve designed the screen to run extremely smooth at 40fps and the trade off with battery life is worth it for how much smoother the game gets with 10 extra frames. Once you go over 40fps to 60fps the trade off for smoothness by reducing battery life is not worth it as much. Valve did a ton of tinkering to make games feel extremely smooth locked at 40fps compared to other devices

@@arthurcaliburn5521they basically made it possible to lock the refresh rate of the screen at 40hz so that your framerate is in sync with the refresh rate of the screen. This means you don’t get any tearing or stuttering. Now where’s my $8500?

Cyberpunk on the steam deck is a bit more "playable" today than before when I first got my deck it back in April, it was really stuttery even at lowest settings with fsr enabled. Not sure if its because of updates to cyberpunk or because of the 40fps feature that was added later to the deck makes the game look "smoother".
Because DirectX doesn't exist on Linux in any form, Translating Direct3D game shaders to Vulkan has the unfortunate downside of causing stutters due to shader compilation. The good news though is that it will become less stuttery over time as more shaders are recompiled to Vulkan. Steam appears to solve this now by providing a pre-compiled shader cache.

It's nice to see you actually playing the games and having fun.
Most benchmark videos are highly informative and focused on providing that, which is 100% the point of course, but after watching hundreds of them to decide a purchase, it gets tiring seeing numbers, even for someone who loves numbers like me.

I got to work games like cyberpunk like a dream, for example:
Cyberpunk 2077 1.6 version:
Downloaded FSR 2.1 mod, balanced
CET engine tweaks
Lowish-med settings
8W tdp cap
40Hz limit -> 8w cap or 30fps limit with 7w cap
In launch parameter set DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
Used GE-7-42 Proton
3 hours to 3,5 hours of battery life with smooth 30 to 40 fps.
The main problem is that cyberpunk, and some others don't use the energy with efficiency, a lot of times is wasting energy, so putting the TDP cap is a must.
If you stutter when you compile use the DXVK_ASYNC command
If you have good performance but even tho bad battery life try limiting the TDP

Most of these work on 40fps by setting resolutions to 960 x 600.
Even got callisto protocol to run solid 40 with cryoutilities.
And be sure to run games on 720p or less for fsr to be enabled

Elden ring actually plays surprisingly smooth, nothing was worse than trying to play Callisto protocol on my 3050 ti laptop

I played through all of Red Dead Redemption 2 except for maybe 3 hours or so when I forgot my Steam Deck at home and only had my Razer laptop with me, so I fired it up on there. 150+ hours and the fact that I was playing on the Steam Deck never was a hindrance, and everything looked great. Would love to see more games target that level of graphics and target running at 30 on the Steam Deck.

Not a great video, fps is locked to 30 for no reason for benchmarks, FSR at balanced also for no reason when cyberpunk can easily run at medium with FSR quality or even without FSR. Disappointed

A lazy 30fps lock is the opposite of optimized, that’s what comes to mind first.

I love my Steam Deck but the hardware can’t run any AAA titles more recent than 2014. That being said, it can run thousands of other games at 800P and 60 FPS. It’s pretty darn amazing!
Steam Deck would make a great FIFA device.
5:16 FSR actually significantly decreases battery life
GTA IV will run at a pretty much locked 60 fps with the default settings when you boot the game up from fresh. Literally out of the box with no tweaks needed
Best gta too even if it hates mods.
For me, some games like GTA V doesn't need to be locked at 30 or 40fps since the games are already capable of running at stable 50-60fps. I would only lock it if it keeps going under 40fps.
i agree for the story mode but online 50-60 fps aint happening, so I chose 30 fps just so the average person can have a good time for both story and online modes
Also I lock it at 40 to conserve battery

I'm disappointed you didn't actually showcase the actual range of the possible performance of these games. Many of these games I know for a fact can run stably at a higher FPS than what you showed.
like i mention in the video i have full videos on most of these games which shows the full range on each preset

@@Javs_Tech Massive lag spikes? As I mentioned in my comment, there are games you showed that are capable of running stably, as in no lag spikes, at a much higher framerate than what you show. If anything, your video was very reductive to the actual performance of these games. Like showcasing GTA at locked 30, when it can so easily run at a stable consistent 60. You're achieving the opposite effect.

No idea about GTA Online though, my comments were in regards to just standard GTA 5.

IMO the average Steam Deck user would want a 1 setting fits all kinda thing
having to tweak your fps cap between gamemodes just isn't ideal and for battery life, running at 60 fps also isn't ideal
Thanks for video. I have a question, can I play games from win xp until win7 era? I also have some games from very early xp or even win98 on my gog account. I;ve been told that I can install gog but can I actually install and play games from it?
I personally just emulate those older games (PS2 and earlier), its just more convenient and plays better with controllers
but yeah you can install older games on the deck, ive played through AC1 which is from 2007 and it ran beautifully but performance and stability will depend game to game
Showing battery length would be helpful.
The Callisto Protocol runs as poorly as it does because the pc port was atrocious. So I'm surprised the Deck is even running it that well lol

fh5 totally runs at 60 on my undervolted deck. i get 65fps avg on the built in benchmark on low settings with quality fsr2. barely ever drops in gameplay, usually hovers around the high 70s low 80s

Around 80°c on both gpu is crazy... you can boil an egg when u play cyberpunk with 97°c
sort of necroposting here, but thank god they fixed the temps. they're even better on the oled. i haven't seen anyone get higher than 70c on the gpu before, and it's also much quieter.
You were running some games at the wrong aspect ratio FYI. Make sure you set the aspect ratio to 16:10.

If you're gonna be playing and charging at the same time then you can get far better performance (i only capped the fps to 30 to give better battery life), as long as its not a ps5 / series x game
but regardless 30 fps feels fine and the colours / graphics look good as well since its a small screen

Once again, 40fps or nothing for this device. They allow you to change the screens refresh rate between 40-60 for this reason of keeping most games smooth looking and feeling.
Please do another video with a benchmark around atleast 40fps not 30. 30 is the bear minimum.

The Steam Deck runs games better than the win 3
The tdp the win 3 is running those games at is really high, the deck runs at max 15 watts tdp, of course the win 3 will run better at higher wattages
Though(since it's Intel, it runs way worse than amd at lower wattages too)

Most of the games shown are able to run at 40 very easily. 40 is the sweet spot for the Deck. Games look real smooth at 40. I’d say set the screen refresh and fps cap to 40 and tweak the graphic settings to hit that.
And how about the battery life?
I think if you compromise with 30fps, the deck able to run everything. In my opinion a good and enjoyable experience is 40fps. Not 60... but still do it's job. If I can and just for cases I use 60fps, but like i said 40fps is what really makes the worth, but 30 is runs literally everything.

Pretty much. If you're fine with 30fps you can run anything. Which is the trade off you have to make to even have new AAA games even be playable on a handheld device. People act like it can just magically run better than this without the battery life instantly dying lol

In the past consoles have usually been locked to work at 30 fps in order to secure a good performance. You shouldn't feel a difference unless you were used to 60 fps on PCs. In the end, what steam deck tries to achieve is that you can play your steam library anywhere, but obviously not running them at the highest specs.

You should be good. On the plus side, you can even use the Steam Deck as a PC by installing Windows and plugging in peripherals.

older games tend to look better on the deck since you're running em on a smaller screen
and in those ps3 era games you should be able to get 60 fps pretty easily, i capped the fps to 30 to get extra battery life / keep the temperatures down
ps4 era games you can pretty much get 40-50 fps
ps5 era games mostly run at 35-40
and for GTA 5 and 4, those are the ps4 versions on pc not the ps3, so bf4 will be 64 players and not 32

You say the games are running beautifully yet I can see lots of distracting screen tearing in every clip.
Too bad they made running FIFA 23 on the SD a nightmare. I put over 100 hours into FUT FIFA 22 on the deck, the best part is that it was the full blown FIFA game, not that FIFA Legacy BS.

@@ChillYeti laptops use passive cooling, the deck uses active cooling(unless you use the updated fan curve)

just bang it all on high it can handle it runs fine
So the deck is basically a Ps4 portable in terms of graphics and performance
