Never in my life have I ever been able to play over a solo track before and actually feel confident and create new ideas. These last few weeks I’ve been diving into how to solo and where my voice lies on the guitar, and I got lost in time. And here I am at the end of the video, about to rewatch it because the ideas won’t stop. I hope every musician watching can find their voice on their instrument and I challenge you to try sound slightly different with every idea.. even if it’s someone else’s lick, just make it your own. BTW. For beginners who are struggling, just play B phrygian dominant, A diminished scale or G dim6 scale for the chromatic changes and return back to C lydian. The track is composed in G dim6. Avoid C pentatonic even during C maj7. Be safe. Play G major pentatonic. No one will know you suck
I just started getting into Neo soul. I'm not sure if this is too involved of a music theory question for a comment section but answer in a nutshell if possible: how did you know to apply the B Phrygian and the other scales mentioned.
@@redpillpusher basically just because the regualr dominant chord in an E minor/ G major key would be D7, but they're using a B7 instead which would usually be a B minor. In the Key of G, B is the iii chord, which corresponds to phrygian; making the B a dominant chord would then make the scale phrygian dominant ( a mode of the harmonic minor)
You could also play E harmonic minor over it and would be A-okay. If you wanted to know what makes a harmonic minor, it's just a minor scale with a sharpened 7th degree because that gives it more tension that wants to be resolved to the root (in this case E). If I'm being a stickler, the Ebdim should really be a D#dim bc you're raising the 7th, not lowering the root note. Hope this helps :)

the track is so good, very groovy, but there is an error, the second chord is not eb diminished but d# diminished because is the raised seventh in the key of e minor. the raised second interval between the roots of cmajor7 and d#diminished sounds crazy good btw.
while you're technically and theoretically correct, the context matters. in the neo-soul community, and Rnb lexicon in general, sharps are generally avoided bc it's much better to think of the keys most Rnb is written in as flats.
Most BAM (black american music), through the evolution of community based music, is created in flat keys. Thus, the flat versions of things are preferred when this music becomes notated or theorized, because the sharp key equivalent is generally much more messy for no reason.
ex: you're gonna hear alot of Gbmajor/Ebminor and Dbmajor/Bbminor keys in Rnb and especially gospel. its much less practical to write them as F#major and C#major, respectively.
That's why flats are always preferred and in this case, visually, bc E to Eb is much more fluid to think about than E to D#: the first being just an accidental, and the second being a whole entirely different note PLUS an accidental.

This song is in G major :) the E minor, that is correct for this song, is the aeolian scale for G
No, it's in E minor. That's a little confusion when it comes to the connections you're making, it's pretty common, but we have to be careful with it.
The difference between E minor and G major (who share a key signature of one sharp note, that being F#) is about the bars we find the chords in, if they're at the end of the dominant->tonic resolutions, and things like that that indicate that that chord is the tonal center of the song.
Now, when it comes to the greek/church modes, that may make mathematical sense, but we should always remember that modal music came before tonal music, so they're not associated, we just use the modes as reference to better understand the possible harmonies and scales that can be used or are being used, in a song. In this case, for instance, it would be better to call the scale an E minor natural scale instead of an aeolian (even if they have the same notes, which doesn't mean they're the same thing), specially when it comes to the dominant chords, Eb dim (which should be a D# dim, but that's a whole other conversation), and the B7, because they both have a D# which then make us have to change to the E Harmonic minor scale that has a D# instead of a natural D.
