xDefiant is just released and some gamers already want SBMM back. As it turns out, these gamers didn't want random lobbies or random challenges, rather they just wanted easy streamer lobbies. I'm going to be talking about this funny turn of events, and how the game is doing two weeks post launch. I'm also going to talk about some of the hit rag issues and upcoming updates to xDefiant.

Yeah I noticed this. Most people in my xDefiant lobbies are easy, with one or two enemies noticeably harder to take down. It makes it more fun. I can change how I approach the more difficult encounters if I know they're coming.
I still think its too early to say much though. Most people are still leveling guns and don't have a "main class" yet. Even a year from now, you can't guarantee anyone in a normal lobby is trying their absolute best to win. If you want to prove yourself the only real way to do that is through ranked.

I honestly think that was the most OBVIOUS thing ever!
They are always like "Oh SBMM is so dumb, because I am so good so I always get with the most skilled players, but some times I just want to chill and don't have to sweat and tryhard all the time"
I am surprised anyone ACTUALLY believed that, and didn't just pretend to believe that because they felt the same way! Because what that really meant was:
"SBMM is so dumb, because I am so good, but I only get to play against all the other good players, I just want to dominate and own everyone once in a while, so I can get my ego boosted even more"
But as drift0r points out, they were actually NOT in the best lobbies, and now they get a taste of reality, and they don't like it!

That's chilling, I'm still gonna try to do good. Still gonna sweat on occasions to do good. Still chilling. COD. You can't just whip out a crossbow anymore and have fun, you get owned a few lobbies then you start to do better so the game puts you with sweats using meta weapons and your getting dropped like you have both hands in your pants.

Its not like older battlefield games where if you wanna chill you just take a random vehicle and drive around the map. It's more than just "bad players" to kill. The opposing team has great, good, and bad (well bad is harsh, probably a bit below average ) and everything in between. I can mostly do well but will consistently meet my nemesis. It also reminds me of peak COD days when my friend groups consisted of some terrible skilled friends who wouldn't do too well most games, but they could still offer help in terms of playing objective, callouts, sacrificing themselves to show an enemy's location (I think of Enemy at the Gate sniper scene), and beyond. Plus it's still fun playing with friends even if they're mediocre and you can still win via individual effort since the opposing team isn't a carbon copy of you. Today such experiences are not as easily obtainable, as your bad friend will guarantee you lose a SBMM game and they themselves will have an awful time. It has sorta ruined a lot modern multiplayer games unless you have very similarly skilled friends.

You get “worse” and “better” players instead of an entire lobby of people at the same or near your skill. That makes it hard to be rewarded for getting better, because you will always be playing against people playing as hard as you are, so you will never feel like you’re learning any faster than anybody else. Which means you will never be rewarded for being better.

Glad Drift0r mentioned hitbox desync on fast moving players, as I am pretty sure that is the general problem is with the hitreg.
People seem to focus on the most extreme examples but those are almost certainly because the person's internet/router upstream momentarily crapped out. The real problem imo is that on fast moving players a couple shots that are on target will often not register and a couple that are off target will. It is a lot more subtle, and often only really noticeable if you rewatch a clip in slow mo, but feels bad regardless.

(I think they’re usually related to team balancing etc) but I think engagement is the name of the game ESP on PVE games moreso than PvP games… I think a lot of recent patents in game show blatant manipulation in one form or another where the user experience is clearly being tailored and xdefiant is clearly just breaking the mold…I had WAY HARDER lobbies at 8am than I had at 6pm on xdefiant which leads me to believe the match making is less strict depending on the size of player pool which would make logical sense, ONLY ABSOLUTE DEMONS play at 7am in Atlanta, maybe it’s just career guys who have to go to work an get their game on early but I see the best players in the morning

It just goes to show how SBMM makes less skilled players think they’re better than they actually are, whilst making high skill players think they’re worse. Went from about a 1.2 kd in the recent call of duty’s to a 2.3 in Xdefiant. If you’re complaining about lobby’s being too hard, either get good at the game, or play ranked when it releases.

The reason why I would prefer the way xDefiant has handled matchmaking is that it allows for players underperforming now to get better over time. This felt impossible with the way the SBMM is implemented in COD. No matter if your skills improve, it’s nullified by being matched against sweats 24/7

I get rolled still but personally I excel at these type of objective, hero shooters and push the objective hard to get into engagements. For me, Xdefiant is incredibly fun and I haven’t gotten frustrated once because if I match a really good team I know what I’m doing wrong and where to correct to win. Also, I’ve actually been able to get high kill games, 40 plus, where I haven’t been able to in Cod for a while.

I was definitely one of those people saying the game was too sweaty day 1. For me, back when I played Cod, I'm a 1.5k/d but I don't value kills as much either. I'll actively let people escape my sights if I know they won't bother me while I go win the game for my team. So, it's probably lower than my current skill but you get the point.
My version of "sweat" is that people were already exploiting the game's systems, via jump spam and slide jump pre-aiming around every single corner. The kind of people that say they could go pro without actually growing their individual skill, they just use whatever is considered to be the "best," either by loadouts or playstyles.
And a lot of that still reigns true, however since the playerbase has expanded, that has all calmed down. Especially since the announcement that certain movement is getting patched because it's considered a legitimate exploit not designed for the game.

As an adult casual at this point, I think the matching is great. Yeah it sucks when you have a match where you go 10/15 and just can’t do anything but kill trade at best. But that’s what makes it fun. Then you get to chase getting positive again. My issue with this game beyond hit detection (which is not great) is all of the character gimmicks. Make them just basic operators with no weird abilities and this game is fantastic. I don’t understand why every game has become a hero shooter where you have so many variables. Just let people go up against each other and test their abilities against one another.

If you just started and have less than 10 hours on the game just keep playing and you'll get better. A lot of people had a bit of a hard time transitioning their cod skills into this game since it's not the same as cod just similar. It took me a few hours but once I got comfortable with my sens and controls and learned how to play the maps better I started dominating lobbies. It's just the normal process of adapting to a new game but if you are an actual good player that stands out in most shooters you will stand out here with some practice. Something that helps you get better as well is watching some high level players on Twitch for example. Watch how they play and what they do and try to copy it and also try to understand why they are doing it. If you take time to get better at this game you will be rewarded due to the lack of sbmm.

The fun math side of this is that it’s incredibly unlikely you will run into someone who is not higher skill than you unless you are in the 99th percentile. Even then the gap between skill levels aren’t linear so even if you on paper are similar skilled by rank the macro and micro could be completely different.
I’m 100% sure that the data since it’s so new is heavily towards lower skilled players being the majority.

I was considering trying Xdefiant, because I'm a fan of objective based shooters, and I heard this game was going to be that. However, after watching how the game plays, and how they were catering to bring in the COD crowd, I knew that this game would never be a competitive objective based shooter. Sure it will have competitively skilled players, but the team aspect would die early, because they wanted to appeal to a large player base that doesn't care about teamwork. So, I don't want to throw everyone in the same box. There used to be a lot of players who spent most of their time playing search and destroy or some hardcore objective mode on COD. COD had and still has a lot of objective game modes to be an objective team coordinated game. The reason why COD never became that was because they never gave more incentives to coordinate. The option was always there, but the incentive wasn't. This game seems to be taking some steps towards being a shooter that benefits from coordination, but it doesn't demand it, and then when you appeal to a fan base that doesn't care to do it either, the whole player base will learn to not do it, and it will just become a casual shooter. Is it ok to be a casual shooter? Absolutely, but the game didn't start off with that selling point. Seems to me that they wanted to get the more objective based people in first, then the more casual base in, so the promoted one philosophy and now they are promoting the other. It's smart, because if they said this was going to be a casual shooter first, the people who like to coordinate and play objectives wouldn't have come, but now they are already in it lol. They marketed well, but for a game featuring Ubisoft shooters, half of which are tactical shooters, they aren't keeping it true to it's core. Not a big deal though, there is R6 Seige for those who like round based objectives, and I hear Ghost Recon is returning to their roots, which is the one I'm waiting for if I wanted a military based feeling shooter.

I never played CoD but I reckon the region does matter in this equation with regards to some lobbies feeling sweaty.
I can easily wait for 5mins+ for a match no matter which mode I chose, and I see the exact same people over and over again and the matches are often reasonably well balanced, its rare to have a single person completely decimate the lobby(and even when they do a lot of them complete ignore the objective and lose as a result), I'd say at least 80% of my matches are 'close win/close loss'.
But then I play off peak and get put into other regions ( 180+ping ) and I get some of the most lopsided matches around where it legit feels like I'd have to try to lose.
