    I would definitely be interested in the ability to add a manual safety.

      Does that fix the drop issues? I'd think so, right?

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @soundsnags2001 the drop safety issue came down to the weight of the original trigger, they swapped it out and the drip safety issue was fixed (in 2017). The MSAFET toolkit does add the extra level of piece of mind for some, but to me this gives your p320 a new level of modification, I like having the OPTION to have the MS or non-MS model.
      Here’s a link to the kit, if you scroll down it also has a link to the updated and complete “how-to” video:

    Love the video, thank you! I already sent my FCu and had it modified. I purchased the Wmanual safety parts kit and now just need to intall it. I am old school and do not entirely trust any striker fire to not be able t have a misfire. I have seen glocks and just about every one of them have a murphy law day and go off. where a simple manual safety fixes or at least greatly reduces that to almost a 1 in a billion chance. I know many striker fire enthusiast will argue it slows your response time yadda yadda, all made up excused. I lift the safety on the draw after it clears the holser in and out of copetition and it has never ever effected my time.

    No idea why Sig would not make the FCU the same for the Safety and Non-Safety versions. Seems like more work for them. The P365 you can just buy the Safety lever parts and they fit right in to the FCU

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is exactly my thinking, would have been very easy to add them from the get go. Something like that on a stamp wouldn’t add cost as far as I see.

    This will void the factory warranty.
    It is much simpler to buy a P320 that is factory equipped with a manual safety.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  ปีที่แล้ว

      This will ABSOLUTELY void the warranty. However it’s something people decide to do for various reasons. There are a few companies that have offered this as a service for several years and it seems like those that opt to do this really like it! Only down side is having to ship off the gun.

  • @fin_jan

    You are incurring 100% liability for any "bad stuff" that happens down the line. I would not do this. Buy an M17 FCU and be done with it.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  ปีที่แล้ว

      In many ways, it’s strange to say it, but the reality is in every instance of modifying a firearm yourself, the fine line between “it failed on its own” and “I did it wrong” gets too blurred, if something goes wrong. It the main reason why all the part manufacturers make a note that all parts should be installed by a qualified Gunsmith. Even when it’s just swapping out a trigger, (which is a task almost all of us know how to do ourselves). It’s the unfortunate reality of liability .
      However, I wholeheartedly agree that if you are not going to be 100% confident in the modification, the M17 or M18 is the way to go!

    I spent my 21 years in the Marines with a manual safety on the M1911 and M9. Sometimes I still reach for the safety on my P320. I would like the option to add it to all 3 of my 320’s.

    Knowing what I do about the P320, including what I learned here, I can conceive of no way that any of mine are capable of discharging on their own without the trigger being pulled either directly by finger manipulation or indirectly by the action of something else that does it. Unintentionally pulling the trigger by one of those means, especially the latter, is of course possible as countless Glock owners have discovered. Because of that possibility despite my best intentions and practices, I would definitely consider such a modification to the guns I have. I am therefore very interested in learning what would be involved.

    YES! I'm 62 and I've been shooting guns and hunting since I was 10 years old. I only buy guns with manual safety's on them. I want the P320 X Five DH3 but they don't offer it with a Manual Safety. My P365X has a manual safety! My P226 is the SAO with a Safety. I think this idea of a Manual Safety conversion kit is a great idea! I think there are a good amount of people out here like myself that are maybe old fashioned and still prefer a manual safety!

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is one of the reasons why I made this kit. I know the manual safety is not something everyone wants and that is a debate that will go on forever, but for those people that do like it being able to have it is a game changer. Not to mention, my favourite feature is that once you do have the manual safety cut out, you get to decide at any given time if you want to switch back-and-forth.

    I chatted with Heath at Sig yesterday in response to the 6/14 "colorful parts" email and he says Sig is now offering a factory conversion of a P320 to add the manual safety lever for $265 including parts and a new grip module and return of your current grip module. Cost for a P365 was $160. presumably because the frame is already configured for a manual safety lever and doesn't require modification or replacement like a P320.

    I've been looking at various full size 45 and 10mm handguns for use as a woods gun. Although I like the Sig P320 XTen, I had pretty much decided against it because of the issues that have been reported with accidental discharge. Even after their upgrades, if you are counting on the mass of the trigger to be light enough in during a drop to not move the ~0.190 inch that is required disengage the other internal safeties, and if you're counting on never having anything snag the trigger in a holster, then I'm just not comfortable with it. Glock at least has the trigger safety. Springfield has trigger and grip safeties. And the DA/SA guns don't have this issue at all because of heavy trigger pull in DA mode and manual safeties. That being said, if you offered this manual safety, I would quite likely buy the Sig and it would certainly be upgraded with the manual safety. I think having a locked trigger would be better than trigger and grip safeties. And I like the gun other than this one critical issue.

    Would love to add to mine. If you do get this into production, I would like to hear more details. I had always had a manual safety in my early years because of time in service and got use to them. Times have changed and most have chosen to go away from them. I have seen though most accidents though are not from holster pulls but from exposed triggers, that is where I believe a safety would be most helpful. If you roll this out, I could see myself making the purchase if I can find a gunsmith willing to do the work.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is no real pro or con, within the Sig community the aspect of modularity is huge, I believe that since it’s an upgrade that makes it so that you now have a new option to modify the gun, makes this very popular. Once you do this upgrade you can then swap back and forth between safety or no safety which I believe is a good way to not have to buy another FCU (just to have that option). It really ultimately comes to a personal preference when it comes to personal use/protection. Those with 1911 backgrounds love a safety, those with Glock experience may not even ever use it.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe you need to send both FCU and Grip and both are charged differently, or perhaps have to purchase a new grip. I would aim for half that. Plus, you would be able to possibly reuse this kit, which would be substantial if you have more than one FCU.

    • @deucedeuce1572
      @deucedeuce1572 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SIGMECHANICS Yeah, good point. It's nice too, because the safety cut doesn't interfere with the rest of the parts, so you can always add or remove the safety (esp if you have a non-safety cut frame, but that's just to make it look nice without the safety).
      Yeah, reusing it is a major bonus too. I know several people that have several P320's who want to add a safety to at-least one of them, but never have, because they just don't want to have to mail their guns. Can't blame them though, I'm the same way.

    I believe this would be a big seller. I recently had the FCU frame milled out to accept a manual safety because of continued accidental dischargeproblems with the P320

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  ปีที่แล้ว

      I always felt safe with the P320, but I also always understood that piece of mind with your carry is far more valuable to an operator. Even the slightest mental hesitation makes that firearm dangerous, even if it’s not. Hopefully, something like this will provide that peace of mind at what I would assume to be a very low price.
      So far everybody seems to be very positive with this project so I’m going to see about getting this into production soon. I just want to make sure I can provide everything down to the bits before this becomes public.

    Does the m18 manual safety block the sear from releasing the striker or just the trigger from being pulled? I'm a Little nervous using the m18 as a everyday carry

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  ปีที่แล้ว

      The safety essentially physically blocks the trigger from moving forward, there is a pin on the safety lever that locks into a slot in the trigger, which then stops the interaction between it and the sear.

    I own the Carry AXG metal. It is my favorite pistol. However, with latest lawsuit I just won't carry. I was told it was not possible to add manual safety. Now that I see it is potentially possible, I now face the problem that my frame is stainless, which means as much as I would jump on the opportunity, it won't work with my metal frame .

But aluminum is pretty soft...I think you might want a better jig, but a router should be able to mill it easy enough

Without your very well made and thorough instructions I'm not sure I could have completed the conversion successfully, but following it very closely made the process painless and straightforward. Also as a side benefit, I learned a lot more about the p320 in doing this conversion.
    Thank you so much for the work you put into the Kit AND the great step by step video - I have mostly shot 1911's for decades so I am used to safeties, and now my competition x5 has the same manual of arms as my 1911's and 2011's.

    Howdy Eddmen 🤠
    I have a question, I have noticed by handling many p320, p365 & m17/m18 models. From what I owe to many other gun shops with new and used SIG’s.
    With every single manual safety m17/18 I’ve handled, I noticed a bit of sucking down movement of the rear part of the upper slide when dry firing without the magazine installed (with mag installed the movement is less because the mag follower is pushing up, but still very noticeable)…
    Now with all the non manual p320 & p365’s I’ve looked at, there is no perceived to very little sucking down movement with the rear upper slide when pulling the trigger with or without the mag in.
    When checking for slide and FCU movement/ wiggle/ relationship tolerance, it didn’t seam like the non manual safety models had much less movement/ tighter tolerances.
    I believe I understand that the sear moves in a downward movement when the trigger is pulled and what ever slop that is in the striker fire housing, slide and FCU gets tightened up by the friction with the sear and its downward movement.
    Now I was told by a sig expert that all sig models are Assembled guns vs fitted for better assemblies with tighter tolerances, even if it’s a legion model. And so one could get a gun that fits tighter or looser than another no mater the model. Which would mean all p320’s would have variation of slide movement no matter the model, and a M17 could have next to no movement and a xFive have quite a lot. Which is not my finding with the sample size of 20 I have experienced so far.
    So my two questions for you are.
    •One, do the M17/m18 models run different tolerances or parts? Like is the slide hole for the striker fire unit bigger or the striker fire housing smaller?
    •Two, when modifying a non-manual FCU into a manual FCU, does the movement change?
    Thank you for your time.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great analysis. To start I will share this video where I talk about the slide movement and why: th-cam.com/video/itGqqq8IcL8/w-d-xo.html
      To answer the questions:
      1. No, there is no difference in tolerance. Generally the slides are all milled in one way, with various changes (Ie: M17 is shorter, x5 has lightening cuts etc), but the core slide is the same. This is how you get many companies that make slides for the P320, Sig provides them a model of the slide under their OEM program and they add a design to it.
      It’s possible the slides can have variation depending on tooling, programming and such, but that’s not going to be common with factory made slides.
      Part tolerance does exist of course, for the most part Sig uses MIM parts, because not only are the parts made en mass, but injection moulding is generally considered a great way to keep high tolerance when mass producing. Therefore, you MAY be talking fractions of an inch, but almost never something so massive it will make you too far off spec.
      2. No, there will be no difference so long as the cut out is made to the correct specs (give it take), you will not find any additional changes to the feel of the trigger.
      I hope this helps. Let me know if there’s anything else, you can always email me as well at sigmechanics@gmail.com

      @@SIGMECHANICS Thank you for the great response. Yes, because of your video and others on TH-cam I became aware of the movement so I started looking for it. I have a xTen with no up & down no movement and my local shop has a well used p320Max for sale with no movement ether. Actually all current/new p320 in the 3 different local gun shops don’t show near as much movement as your p320 used in your video. But all M17/M18 (about 6 samples) have shown more movement than what I see in your posted video. Which leaves me very confused. Lol

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The safety blocks the sear from moving and stops the trigger from being pulled. The lock lever (striker safety) is independent from the manual safety mechanism.
      I don’t see how the gun can AD, so far (from specifically a scientific view), I don’t think it can AD. Trigger MUST be pulled in order to discharge so my opinion is people are causing an ND but are failing to report it as such.

      I have made and prototyped a large version, modelled after a P226. Works great but it’s not something I was going to release publicly (it was just for fun).
      I don’t think anyone makes anything like it so far for commercial sale though.

    Yes. I want to convert my xten to add a safety. But if I change grip modules I'd hate to have to keep doing it.

      I’m trying my best to have it ready and available by the end of this month. Production is near completion and the manufacturer should be shipping soon. It will be made available through modguns.com (formerly SigSauerParts).

    I have seen a kit on Sigs website. Is this the kit you speak of or something different? When I saw it online earlier today it said it was out of stock. It was a p320 manual safety kit.

      They are two different things but ultimately work together. The kit I’m making allows you to convert the non-manual FCU and grip so that afterwards you can install the manual safety kit.
      Unless you modify the FCU (or already have an M17/M18), you cannot install the MS.
