Ren was in a band called The Big Push. If having a Ren day it's worth including a few of their videos such as Dignity, Precious, Why My Woman, Sweet Little Lady etc.
I think he does such a good job of scoping out his video locations. He finds great acoustics in everyday spaces. You can see it in videos like "Violet's Tale", where you see the markers on the floor telling him where to stop to get the desired effect. Brilliant.
Its amazing what Ren and Crew can create with virtually no money. A lot of bigger artists must be asking why they pay so much for video production when independent minds can achieve so much with so little. I believe he is hp for an award for Hi Ren- best video under £1000.

I can't quite put my finger on that feeling even after hearing it many times now. I hadn't thought about the video aspects and how that's adding to the unsettled feeling I get. Question-is Chinchilla singing a harmony or counter melody? I'm not a musician, but a friend I showed this to (who is) said she thought it was a counter melody. Totally agree, his lyrics are so important. That's the main reason I add his subtitles to the reaction. I try very hard not to get in the way so I don't stop the video and I try to talk in the appropriate places if at all.
Oh my my Jeff this is such a fantastic song. I love how Ren can sing his truth and remain himself within his performance. He keeps it simple and complicated at the same time. This pairing is wonderful and when she goes for that gospel-like high note at the end I get the shivers. Amazingly beautiful. I second this! Ren has some great bluesy electric guitar (and a bunch of other styles, including playing bass) when you look at The Big Push. Hendrix is a huge influence, after all!

I am 62 Ren has touched so many hearts ,,,many generations besides the kids & young adults he has allot of adopted parents grandparents, aunts and uncles that wants the best for him and his talent I have not bought a physical cd copy for years for a new artist But I have for Ren I preorder his new cd and his older cds …they are going in my Cd collection of older & favorite artist ,,

I have a question - how did you put the correct lyrics above the scree - I say correct bec if one presses the CC ( close captions ) on you tube the lyrics are distorted and not correct word choices but yours are exactly REN’s lyrics . But between December and now Ren might've put official closed caption transcripts on the video... And so when you click on it it doesn't go to the automatic captions anymore but goes to the transcript CC which are correct.

I don't know how Ren recorded the guitar, but if I had ever been clever enough to even think of doing something like this, I would probably have sent the guitar signal straight to desk via Bluetooth, or wireless, and just played the guitar unamplified in the hallway to avoid spillage from the guitar amp, and this would allow him to mix the guitar level in with the two lapel mics after with better separation. Maybe the guitar was amplified in the hallway, so that he could have a better feel of what he was playing. I don't know, its an interesting challenge.
Ya, I was also thinking he could have recorded direct and re-amped it later if he wanted to. Maybe just the unamped guitar could have served enough sound to sing too in that verby hallway (seeing there is no monitoring device in his ear). I was also thinking since he was wireless, that amp could have been mic'd up anywhere in the location. Well, whatever he did, it sounded freakin' great. Your insight into the various aspects of production is really well presented for a layman like myself, but what makes your reactions special is not the words you speak, it is your facial expressions while you are listening, they say far more than words can. It's a pleasure to watch you. And you are right Ren does draw you in as if you are there with him. What is even more remarkable is that Ren has this effect on so many people.

I give reactors a lot of crap because they pause it every 10 seconds you're probably the best reactor. You let The Music Play and then you bloviate afterwards and I care what you have to say because you do it at the end. Bravo
I was so fascinated with the performance of the song that i missed the song lyrics few times i listened - i interpretate the meaning to be about wanting to end his life and burying that temptation with medication or project which helps to suppress it temporally so he go out in the world.
So many Ren masterpieces to choose from. Perhaps, to give you yet another lens from which to view Ren's genius talent, react to The Hunger next. Of course theres also Sick Boi, Losing It, What You Want [for a little retro Beastie Boys vibe] or Genisis; just to name a few. Money Game Part 1 & 2 are an absolute must. Yeah... you may want to add another day of the week for Ren's works. 😊 BTW... You'll want to react to Chinchilla's solo work too. I strongly recommend her Fingers [LIVE version]! It won't disappoint. Great reaction! Possibly my favourite reaction to this performance! You let it play. Your enjoyment of the performance was plain to see and beautifully expressed. You looked at some of the technical aspects in a way that was interesting and interspersed with expressions of appreciation. No speechifying, thank god! It’s funny you say they fit together as puzzle pieces, Ren has said that he sees musical notes as shapes in his head and he creates his music by fitting them together they way he envisions them. A true musical genius.

It's a change of pace from what you've seen from Ren so far but is superb nevertheless.
The "Floaty" video effect also fits well with the subject matter of the song, which is the feeling one gets on the anti-depressant Zoloft (called by it's generic name Sertraline in the song). There is so much more to explore with him. If you want see something really interesting, compare his original Animal Flow video with the Live version. As different as it can get, and astounding on both fronts.
I mean any antidepressant can cause the emotional numbness explained in the song. Zoloft is just THE most commonly prescribed antidepressant but ANY antidepressant or SSRI specifically can cause these side effects. Which is why finding a medication that works for your brain chemistry and gives you the least amount of side effects is a bit of a trial-and-error... which is emotionally exhausting to go through. My own personal experience with Zoloft is that it worked really really good for my depression symptoms and I felt really really good while on it but it significantly decreased my appetite (appetite increase/decrease is also a common side effect of antidepressants)... And I was losing weight while on it so it wasn't an antidepressant that I could be on long term because with each doseage increase my appetite continued to decrease. So I was only on it for 3 or 4 months. But it wasn't the right fit for me. But yeah, I didn't experience ANY emotional numbness with Zoloft. I DID experience it with other antidepressants I subsequently was on...but not all of them had that side effect for me. So people can experience different side effects depending on the antidepressants that they're on and no one experiences the EXACT same side effects with the same medication because everyone's brain chemistry is unique and handles the chemicals differently.
Well, you were right. I loved this reaction as well! The first time I heard this song, it absolutely gutted me. Felt like it punched me in the deepest center of my soul and just lives there now. How to Be Me (live) was just as impactful, but in a much more haunting way. I’m not sure if those captions were correct, but I could be wrong. I thought it was “beautiful shame” and not “beautiful shape.” Not a big deal, but I’ve noticed that most of the captions in Ren’s TH-cam videos are wildly inaccurate to the point of being seriously distracting. He usually pins a comment with the lyrics in each video, though. Love hearing and seeing his work through your ears and eyes. Your unique perspective makes these reactions quite compelling. Looking forward to next week!

I’ve been subscribed since you kind of rediscovered Dirty Loops a year ago or whenever it was Jeff. Great to see you reacting to Ren. Love them both, although they obviously bring different qualities to the table. That said, I think there’s less difference between the two artists than it appears on the surface. Dirty Loops have fabulous pop sensibilities and Ren is a phenomenal musician in a compositional sense with regard to actualising his song concepts. Both great at taking advantage of the visual expression that comes with TH-cam as well. Would love to see Ren start to subtly hint at Prog/Fusion elements within his compositions,( that said I do feel he is almost starting to go in that direction in a small way already, although he’s probably not doing it in a conscious way). I’m a musician myself and I think you’ll enjoy going down the rabbit hole,( as all his fans describe it as lol). I certainly have.

Rensday is now a favorite part of my week. Great reactions & insightful analysis; Liked & Subscribed my brother. Also: you deserve to see some of Ren's "lighter" content. I'd *highly* recommend "I Shot The Sheriff / Road to Zion / Hip Hop" with his band The Big Push (it's the one with 7.5+ million views: th-cam.com/video/uSeCuR51rek/w-d-xo.html ). Also, "Earned It / Man's World / Falling" with his friend Sam Thompkins (th-cam.com/video/d8nBzrhd8Ro/w-d-xo.html ). Both are examples of his "busking", and he has a way of really making these songs his own while still respecting the originals.

IMO Ren's duet with Chinchilla on "How To Be Me" is even better than this, and this one sets a very high bar. Do check it out, but be sure to go to the live version, it's unbeatable. Never fails to choke me up, the emotion is so strong.
just for a bit of fun I thought I'd check it out myself. Watched the studio version, forgot you said live, this reacting business isn't easy you know.🙂 From the band's name I was expecting heavy metal, (not a fan) but what I wasn't expecting was some jazz funk They look like a group of computer programmers who play music in their spare time, but it wasn't that bad. Would like to hear them do a Steely Dan cover, if anyone can sing.
Ren is self taught on the intruments he plays. Slowing down YT videos of performers and following what they did. He does not read music or write it. He just hears it and visualizes it as shapes and performs it. His band mates do. Seen in a live stream video put out by "Live Nation" during the pandemic, where Romain tells Ren to start with a certain cord and Ren voices his not knowing ... Romain then briefly shows his finger placement on his own guitar and Ren says ok and the 3 of them perform flawlessly.
:) The lyric idea is great but one of the lyrics should have read: "what a beautiful shame" not "what a beautiful shape". The idea of shame here is associated with the feeling of being unable to be freely present in it to enjoy.
As previously mentioned, I find you to be easily one of my favorite reactors to Ren, but may I kindly offer a small suggestion? One of the details I appreciate about your channel is that your genuine delight in the performances is written all over your face, but I find the subtitles so prominently heading the video extremely distracting (and not really needed), so to accomodate for this, I expand my screen to full view, thereby eliminating the subtitles from view, but unfortunately it crops a large portion of your face, and so it becomes difficult to see the reaction I came for in the first place. As a YT creator, you have access to many tools to engage your potential audience, one being your community tab, and also polls that are intermixed within random feeds. Both of these tools not only boost views and potential subscribers, but these engagements also help boost your channel in the YT algorithm. So my polite suggestion is to perhaps send out a poll asking randomized YT viewers whether or not they would prefer the subtitles, or maybe even a different format..this would increase engagement and retainment of subscribers, too. Again, I mean no impertinence in my suggestion, just thoroughly enjoy your content and would love to see your channel receive the attention it deserves. 🌈ᥫ᭡

I have a question - how did you put the correct lyrics above the scree - I say correct bec if one presses the CC ( close captions ) on you tube the lyrics are distorted and not correct word choices but yours are exactly REN’s lyrics . It’s great because it allowed me to sing along . Love your reactions . I watched your intitial introduction to Hi Ren and now I am tuned in to Rensday big time .
Actually, all I did was turn on CC and made sure it was English then slid the subtitles up to the top and hoped for the best! I like having the lyrics up for Ren because it's such an important part of what he does. I enjoy know every word she sings/raps. Thanks for watching!

But between December and now Ren might've put official closed caption transcripts on the video... And so when you click on it it doesn't go to the automatic captions anymore but goes to the transcript CC which are correct.

I don't know how Ren recorded the guitar, but if I had ever been clever enough to even think of doing something like this, I would probably have sent the guitar signal straight to desk via Bluetooth, or wireless, and just played the guitar unamplified in the hallway to avoid spillage from the guitar amp, and this would allow him to mix the guitar level in with the two lapel mics after with better separation. Maybe the guitar was amplified in the hallway, so that he could have a better feel of what he was playing. I don't know, its an interesting challenge.
Ya, I was also thinking he could have recorded direct and re-amped it later if he wanted to. Maybe just the unamped guitar could have served enough sound to sing too in that verby hallway (seeing there is no monitoring device in his ear). I was also thinking since he was wireless, that amp could have been mic'd up anywhere in the location. Well, whatever he did, it sounded freakin' great. I adore this song! As much as I love Ren’s deeper songs, I also love the fun ones! Try “What You Want” or his “Fisher Rap Retake”! 😀
I was so fascinated with the performance of the song that i missed the song lyrics few times i listened - i interpretate the meaning to be about wanting to end his life and burying that temptation with medication or project which helps to suppress it temporally so he go out in the world.
So many Ren masterpieces to choose from. Perhaps, to give you yet another lens from which to view Ren's genius talent, react to The Hunger next. Of course theres also Sick Boi, Losing It, What You Want [for a little retro Beastie Boys vibe] or Genisis; just to name a few. Money Game Part 1 & 2 are an absolute must. Yeah... you may want to add another day of the week for Ren's works. 😊 BTW... You'll want to react to Chinchilla's solo work too. I strongly recommend her Fingers [LIVE version]! It won't disappoint. It’s funny you say they fit together as puzzle pieces, Ren has said that he sees musical notes as shapes in his head and he creates his music by fitting them together they way he envisions them. A true musical genius.

The "Floaty" video effect also fits well with the subject matter of the song, which is the feeling one gets on the anti-depressant Zoloft (called by it's generic name Sertraline in the song).
There is so much more to explore with him. If you want see something really interesting, compare his original Animal Flow video with the Live version. As different as it can get, and astounding on both fronts.

I mean any antidepressant can cause the emotional numbness explained in the song. Zoloft is just THE most commonly prescribed antidepressant but ANY antidepressant or SSRI specifically can cause these side effects. Which is why finding a medication that works for your brain chemistry and gives you the least amount of side effects is a bit of a trial-and-error... which is emotionally exhausting to go through.
My own personal experience with Zoloft is that it worked really really good for my depression symptoms and I felt really really good while on it but it significantly decreased my appetite (appetite increase/decrease is also a common side effect of antidepressants)... And I was losing weight while on it so it wasn't an antidepressant that I could be on long term because with each doseage increase my appetite continued to decrease. So I was only on it for 3 or 4 months. But it wasn't the right fit for me. But yeah, I didn't experience ANY emotional numbness with Zoloft. I DID experience it with other antidepressants I subsequently was on...but not all of them had that side effect for me. So people can experience different side effects depending on the antidepressants that they're on and no one experiences the EXACT same side effects with the same medication because everyone's brain chemistry is unique and handles the chemicals differently.

The first time I heard this song, it absolutely gutted me. Felt like it punched me in the deepest center of my soul and just lives there now.
How to Be Me (live) was just as impactful, but in a much more haunting way.
I’m not sure if those captions were correct, but I could be wrong. I thought it was “beautiful shame” and not “beautiful shape.” Not a big deal, but I’ve noticed that most of the captions in Ren’s TH-cam videos are wildly inaccurate to the point of being seriously distracting. He usually pins a comment with the lyrics in each video, though.
Love hearing and seeing his work through your ears and eyes. Your unique perspective makes these reactions quite compelling. Looking forward to next week!

I’ve been subscribed since you kind of rediscovered Dirty Loops a year ago or whenever it was Jeff. Great to see you reacting to Ren.
Love them both, although they obviously bring different qualities to the table. That said, I think there’s less difference between the two artists than it appears on the surface. Dirty Loops have fabulous pop sensibilities and Ren is a phenomenal musician in a compositional sense with regard to actualising his song concepts. Both great at taking advantage of the visual expression that comes with TH-cam as well. Would love to see Ren start to subtly hint at Prog/Fusion elements within his compositions,( that said I do feel he is almost starting to go in that direction in a small way already, although he’s probably not doing it in a conscious way).
I’m a musician myself and I think you’ll enjoy going down the rabbit hole,( as all his fans describe it as lol). I certainly have.
Ren and Chinchilla i think only 2-3 songs together but both said they would love to do more,,,after Ren health improves…so glad they found the right diagnosis after years of misdiagnosis

ren is so talented its very refreshing. there's a song that i think you would really really enjoy by the wonderful japanese singer LiSA doing a version of her song Gurenge on the channel called The First Take which is a channel that invites japanese singers/artists into there studio to do a true one take no redo's. Ren is self taught on the intruments he plays. Slowing down YT videos of performers and following what they did. He does not read music or write it. He just hears it and visualizes it as shapes and performs it. His band mates do. Seen in a live stream video put out by "Live Nation" during the pandemic, where Romain tells Ren to start with a certain cord and Ren voices his not knowing ... Romain then briefly shows his finger placement on his own guitar and Ren says ok and the 3 of them perform flawlessly.
It's odd and unjust that this channel has relatively few subscribers, compared to many others, considering the quality of its content.

:) The lyric idea is great but one of the lyrics should have read: "what a beautiful shame" not "what a beautiful shape". The idea of shame here is associated with the feeling of being unable to be freely present in it to enjoy.
As previously mentioned, I find you to be easily one of my favorite reactors to Ren, but may I kindly offer a small suggestion? One of the details I appreciate about your channel is that your genuine delight in the performances is written all over your face, but I find the subtitles so prominently heading the video extremely distracting (and not really needed), so to accomodate for this, I expand my screen to full view, thereby eliminating the subtitles from view, but unfortunately it crops a large portion of your face, and so it becomes difficult to see the reaction I came for in the first place. As a YT creator, you have access to many tools to engage your potential audience, one being your community tab, and also polls that are intermixed within random feeds. Both of these tools not only boost views and potential subscribers, but these engagements also help boost your channel in the YT algorithm. So my polite suggestion is to perhaps send out a poll asking randomized YT viewers whether or not they would prefer the subtitles, or maybe even a different format..this would increase engagement and retainment of subscribers, too. Again, I mean no impertinence in my suggestion, just thoroughly enjoy your content and would love to see your channel receive the attention it deserves. 🌈ᥫ᭡
