Thank you for this. I’m struggling making the decision between the Sony and Canon R5.

Good luck...but I think the best advice is to wait and see right now

You mentioned that EVF doesn’t always allow you to see the full scene in darker spots. This can be overcome in a couple of ways - you can turn off live view in the menu, or you can assign a function to a customisable button that boosts the ISO of the EVF image so you see more (it doesn’t alter the actual image ISO).

The issue is one of tonal range in the EVF. In a high contrast scene, the EVF lacks the tonal range to display both the highlights and shadows simultaneously. Boosting the ISO would blow out the highlights...

Focusing with mirrorless can also depend on the aperture you have set (since we typically use high aperture underwater) in exposure simulation, which isn't the case for DSLR photos (it always focuses wide open then closes down when shooting).

The phase detect "sweet spot" tends to be from f/2.8 to f/5.6, with apertures outside that range starting to add complications that impact focus.) DSLRs always focus at maximum aperture, which is fine until you start adding teleconverters to slow lenses, or try to use a really fast lens. The DSLR approach is not so fine if the lens has any focus shift to it (different focus achieved at different apertures with the same focus element position). The Z cameras, for example, focus at the aperture you set up to f/5.6, so focus shift influencing your results would only happen at apertures above f/5.6. But the Z cameras also aren't filtering the light through a partially silvered mirror, so they also tend to work for focus at incredibly small apertures. Most DSLRs stop focusing around f/8 as a maximum aperture because enough light doesn’t get to the focus sensors via the separators.

I have found that my a7r4 delivers slow focus for shark action and has never been deluxe at higher ISOs, so I'm looking into the A7rV, a1 or the upcoming A9III. Love my a1 for action sports, travel, concerts, landscape, nature, and night sky. It would be great to have it along to shoot above and below the sea on every trip....but at a price don't ya know.

Its not the cost of the camera for me,its the cost of a good housing for it.

Thank you for the video. I just picked up this camera and needed help justifying the investment 😅
